How big were the suckers you were seeing? My roughfishing arse needs to catch some lake run ones but I'm waiting for the 16"+ fish not the little 8" ones haha.

That's what I hear, can't wait to get up for them! I just wasn't sure if the big ones of that size were present in numbers yet or just early run, smaller fish. "Jack" suckers if you will.

My grandfather used to go up there and net those suckers.  Cut off the head, tail and guts then would grind them into patties.  It was before my time but he said they were good.  He was born in 1901 so he lived through the depression.  His generation would eat anything, staving with no money will do that I guess.  He also used to talk about the blue pike and how good they were.  Extinct now I guess.

Haven't ruled anything out. Always go up the first weekend of March madness, so if the fishing sucks, can always sit around in my hotel room watching basketball.

Actually did better than I expected to. Friday, most tribs had a ton of ice, so went to 16 mile, walked the entire creek before we finally found a few fish, smolts were everywhere. Black woolly buggers and black stonefly nymphs worked here. Later on, went west and checked out some water on upper elk, still a bunch of ice around and not many fish, so didn't do much here.

Saturday, most of the ice was gone, went to Da Nut circus, and was pleased to have it all to ourselves. A good number of jacks around, along with some bigger fish mixed in, caught several here, as well as a big sucker. Hot pink san juan worm was the ticket here.

Friday we fished Rick Rd down about a 1/2 mile low and clear, saw no fish.  Not worth the trip...  See you in the fall.

Don't mean to take this discussion in an unintended direction, but we fish Lake Kipawa every year and we catch lots of blue walleye mixed in with the "regular" walleyes.  If you drop one on the floor of the boat, they actually leave blue marks.  By the end of the week, the boat looks like we were on a Smurf hunt!!  Here's a picture that really shows what these fish look like.

I almost forgot, even though I have never caught one, it happens with the perch up there too.

I don't know if this is the same sub-species as the Lake Erie blue walleye.  I'll say this, they taste like walleye!!

The now extinct subspecies of "Blue Pike/Walleye" was Sander vitreus glaucus, and had behavior that varied greatly from S. v. vitreus. From what I've read, Blue Pike spawned in much deeper water than yellow Walleye and didn't grow much larger than Yellow Perch. The Blue Walleye that are common in certain other lakes are indeed blue Walleye, but they still fall under the primary subspecies of Walleye (S. v. vitreus), unlike Erie's Blue Pike which were genetically distinct.

Captain, that looks partially Xanthic, very rare that wild fish with that pigmentation survive to adulthood, so that's an impressive catch!

Wow Dive I had to look that word up ! ...lol....Yes it does have a yellow or orange tint. I've never seen or heard of one like it ever being caught. Extremely rare I'd say!
