Do you guys realize where the name "the stinkhole" originated?

Are you referring to the area in PIB?

Yes.

To my knowledge it's where they used to dump sturgeon carcasses after bludgeoning the ones caught in Percid commercial nets.

Let me see if I can find the thread I posted a picture of it in, can't upload phone pics here either. It was an odd fish for sure, caught in 140 or 160 FOW off northeast about 50-60' down if I recall correctly. 22-24" and 3.5-5 pounds.

Well I went through ten pages and couldn't find the thread but here's a link to the picture: http://www.roughfish.com/...t/files/image_572.jpeg

If it was a pure species then it was either a huge, gnarly Pink or a small, oddly colored Chinook.

Yea , I'm saying a young King ,but lake fish are a little harder to tell then Fall streamers.
We've caught browns that were almost pure silver with a few spots.

If I recall correctly then the mouth was white or grayish with dark gums. Sounds like a Pink at this point but if it's a pure Pink then it must've been swimming through some steroids LOL. It might've been a new state record, actually XD. Was bleeding out so we kept it to eat and whichever species it is it tasted pretty good, nice firm orange meat.

My educated guess is either natural production from the Catt or migratory fish traveling in schools from Lake Huron. They were first released by accident in Lake Superior but later spread and established in all the lakes other than Ontario I believe, they're still the strongest in Lakes Superior and Huron, my two favorites :).

Do you know what time of year the Pinks run on the St. Mary's? I'll be up that way in early summer for Lake Trout and Atlantic Salmon but wouldn't mind a couple bonus Pinks too :).

Nope, all natural repro now. The original stocking was unintentional and they were being raised in a Thunder Bay (Canada) hatchery for a Hudson Bay stocking program that never worked. They dumped the excess fish in to superior expecting them to die and they just took off from there! Awesome little fish to survive and thrive in new conditions plus they're great fighters too! Most guys consider them "junk fish" (hate that false term) but I think they're cooler than Chinooks :).

How about Atlantics natural or stocked ? Never heard any in Lake Erie ? Seen only one caught in Oak Orchard Creek maybe 8-10 lbs. years back. Looked very similar to a Brown Trout not as spotted. Had the inside Salmon black mouth. Never seen anymore since. I believe they don't die after spawning like most Salmon. Heard they are good leapers when hooked ?????

Any photos DM of Atlantics?

Actually, Atlantic Salmon and Lake Trout are the only two native Salmonids (aside from Coregonids) of Lake Ontario, to my knowledge. The Salmon River formerly got legendary runs of Atlantics, but exploitation and habitat degradation wiped them out. NYDEC and ONMNR are stocking them now, with Ontario putting in more effort, but they haven't quite taken off yet. I'd love to see them return, I've only caught one in my life out in 500' on Lake O and lost it next to the boat, but the fight was the best I've had in my life, the pull of big Laker and acrobatics twice that of a Steelhead. I think both trollers and trib fishermen would enjoy them if they make a comeback, but every one is stuck on Chinooks now, not sure why considering Atlantics fight equally or better and are native. Atlantics do, however, seem to prefer Ciscos and Smelt as their primary forage as opposed to the abundant Alewives, so that could be one of many factors contributing to them not fluorishing again yet.

The biggest Atlantic population in the Great Lakes now dwells in northern Lake Huron and make their annual runs up the St. Mary's River, a huge but productive water where they feed on everything from Smelt to Hex nymphs. They aren't native here, but they are very opportunistic in their feeding habits and have adapted quite well to this environment without profoundly impacting any native species.

You are correct about their ability to survive after spawning. Many die of the physical stress of it, but a good bit survive and even spawn again, pretty similar to Steelhead in their spawning/dropback/feeding habits, actually. There's a lot of debate about whether they actually feed once they begin their runs, and it seems like some populations do while others don't. The ones on the St. Mary's River certainly bulk up during their time there, though!

Hope that helped answer your question :).

EDIT: I don't think that Atlantics have black mouths, Captain, pretty sure it's all white like Steelhead. Are you sure it was an Atlantic you caught, perhaps a Coho?

As do I. A very interesting strain of an already awesome species! Hopefully their population recovers on Lake Superior in the future, as it's on the slow track to right now, I'd love to catch a few sometime myself!

Thanks for the info. Yea , maybe that Atlantic had a white mouth, but I swore I seen some black down inside. It was years ago and the guy that caught it wasn't sure. It looked exactly like the photos of Fall female Atlantics on the websites. Was not the usual Oak Orchard catch.
