Good stuff. I hope the rain and snow becomes a little more normal.  Of course for you guys, that's pretty brutal.  How about some snow, but not the kind that goes over the eaves?

If  higher and cooler water persists may be back in a couple of weeks.
Perhaps a Steel or two will cooperate.
A fresh Ho would be outstanding.
Still wont keep any- lol.

Hope you guys do well on Steel.
Reports to date are slim though.
Perhaps leaves and murky dropping water had slowed them- if they are there.
If it picks up will likely run up for a couple of days before rifle season.
As much as I like them on the Switch the real Steel grabber in my arsenal is the light spin rig with sacs.
Think its because  it covers much more water for me.

Just went over my last year reports again, around  Oct 22 did leaves for 2 days at my place and found fresh Kings and Steel upriver.
It sleeted and snowed with heavy leaves and dropping crowds all over.
After that till mid Nov most here - inc myself on a later  trip-reported very slow fishing.
Weather was definitely a few weeks earlier than this year.

It was snowing to beat the band this AM, and the forecast called for freezing rain, so we headed home early and checked small ditches along the way, very few fish seen.  We did 6 hours in the Pineville area yesterday, there are a lot of zombie salmon around but no chrome were observed.  I think next week you will start to see a lot of deads, LFZ has a lot now, downriver the kings that are left are pretty beat up, and we did not observe any active spawners.

Hope you  hit some Steel soon.
Be nice if they are just late.
Snowing and sleeting here in Ct too.
Would like to think the river temps are becoming more to their liking.
With all the talk of a good King run there haven't been many- if any - dead reports till lately- and no serious reports of fresh ones either.
One good push and that may have been it for Kings.
Certainly were VERY few dead last week.

There was a crew of "visual" fishers in the riff above where we fished.  According to twobob they have been there for the last few weeks when he has been up, and they commented that the fish went from fresh and active to nearly dead in the last week.  I think the good push a couple of weeks ago and the high water made for a quick turnaround on the gravel, and many washed downriver with the high flow.  I had one hen king grab a flesh fly yesterday, and it was like reeling in a sack of spuds with a toy boat motor on it.  Popped my fly, righted her, and she stayed in shallow the rest of the day.  You could tell there were a lot of salmon by the way the chop moved around, but they were basically just holding in the flow.  And the drop in temperature was not to my liking at all, made me think I better get the Christmas shopping done!

DSR said some fresh Kings were in today.
Am surprised, but happy ,they are around and breeding.
Bent nosed, humpey back, toothy, big male greens upriver  in November have given me some great memories.

Supposed to have a contractor here today to put in a window and a new storm door, but now he is saying Sunday, maybe Monday, when I want to be on my way back to O'county.  Forecast says mid 60's  Monday, 70 Tuesday here in Rochester, take 10 off for P town and it is still nice weather for swinging flies.

Well all the snow has melted today . It's still pretty brisk and we are heading off to the annual Halloween party at the pub with our long time friends band Cryptical Development . These guys have played together since high school and reall know how to jam !! Many things to do this weekend but I have a feeling I will be riding the couch tomorrow .
Deer camp next weekend , then possibly , a trip to the Great Lake tribs the following but that's a big maybe .
If there are good folks around , that might make the trip more inviting

Going to the river tomorrow, after all. Maybe find some not-so-dead sharks and maybe some redds with a steel belted egg eater behind them. Or hanging in a seam where they're supposed to be. Or a total zip. Anything but another election byte.  Weather looks tolerable, which means the first unexpected  lake effect!!!!!!  HT, gotta hear tales from the French. Maybe on a ride out some time.  Have a great pumpkin weekend everyone.

Re:Weather thread 2016/11/02 07:17:39 (permalink)
I had a great weekend, but it had less to do with the fish, than the fishermen. I looked around, but only fished the UFZ. Found lots of dark kings and got some to eat flesh flies and pale  blue or cheese eggs. Took pictures for some, had fish netted for me, had NO acrimonious political discussions, even though it was brought up. The upper had zero garbage, zero azzhats. Unfortunately, no trout in sight. There were a few fresh cohos that made it to Altmar, I saw one on a rope and heard of a few others down river. I looked and fished in some of the spots that normally would be holding steel at this point of the salmon run, but they were simply not there.  Upper river was fairly crowded, seemed a little less down. DSR reports were pretty dismal.  I drove up to the reservoir and it appears bank full. 500-750 is my favorite flow, but it sure didn't produce any favorite fish. I only have a cursory knowledge of the migrations, so I won't speculate on the  lack of trout, but I, like hundreds of others ,will be waiting for better reports before I decide on another trip. I must admit I was a little perplexed at the amount of available food in eggs and flesh not being taken advantage of by steelhead.  Weather? Cloudy, a few periods of light rain. Perfect. It darn near was.

Good to hear that you had a good experience on the UFZ Charlie, you know that is my favorite stretch. The DSR has not been reporting much on Steel, they say it is very slow down there and that is n't good as it should be loaded at this time of the season.Looks like I'm going to forget the SR for this season and concentrate on the Ohio and PA Erie tribs from now on this year.My first try out there will be Thanksgiving while visiting the daughter.I'll keep you posted.

Interesting reading and seeing how the topic and comments bare simularity with only the location and type of fish being the difference.

No Trout, no Walleye, no Bass, no Crappie...................

As for me, it wouldn't matter if the waterways were polluted with fish I still could..... no catch em.

But that's just me... being me.

Regarding the weather, I'm seeing a gazillion "Wooly Bears" this Fall; any speculation?

Also, does anybody know what time the stupid grass is suppose to quit growing? Enough already!!!

Jack and Bear, please keep me posted, as I've yet to venture west of Oz. I've talked about Erie trips, this year may be it. Thanks. Who knows? Thousands of steel and browns may be staged up ready to bolt upriver, but, somehow I think it may remain on the slow side. For myself, this year was striper redemption, so I can't complain about fishing as a whole. Sure would be nice to get my second favorite, those  chrome   fish, though.

I was just up to erie this past week end...there are fish, but it is slow fishing.
I'm doing a swing to the oak, maxwells and salmon over our thanksgiving break.
I've fished the NY streams to the catt  and rodchester in past falls and just like the erie streams, there are fish...and if they are in the mood it is awesome, otherwise just enjoy the time on the water.

Glad you had fun Charlie !! While I miss the time sharing water with you guys a few weeks ago , it seems like it was a much different senerio this time , I'm sorry I missed this past week. If all things stay the same I may take a venture up soon . I'm ok with less fish as long as there are less goons . As someone pointed out before , it may be for the better .
This evening I zeroed in my crossbow for the upcoming opening weekend . I must say , those things are scary deadly . Way more then my trusty Remington 700 30/06.
I attribute that due to the natural " flinch " reaction from the big gun .
I shot over 50 bolts from the crossbow from range of 20 to 40 yards and every single shot was a direct hit in the bullseye . Unheard of from shooting my rifle .
So in closing , if I can put some fresh meat in the freezer this weekend , I may try to play and release some fresh trouts the following week before our annual Big Bang weekend the week after . From then on , the river is all fair game to everyone as I will be waiting for the hard water to set in :)
Good luck to all that venture into the great outdoors

Heavy frost this morning and the waters of the great beaver ponds has skimmed over with ice.

27 degrees as the sun comes over the tree tops, here in my little piece of the PA. wilds.

Weather Dude says to expect plenty of the gorgeous day, now taking place, in my back yard. Temperature to be in the low 50s with 8 MPH wind from the SSW.

Been plenty of "wooly buggers" this year with all seen to be very black at the leading end and totally brown at the trailing end.

Page 101 paragraph 13; sub paragraph HS of the BTDT Book of BS says the markings on the "Wooly Buggers" this year, indicate Winter is gonna happen within the next few months.

Gotta go, need to ready the Fish Hawk to do some late evening fishing by the light of the Super Moon.

After mentioning Wooly Buggers and how dark they are on just one end, I have come to notice, a lot of woodchucks out and about.

Early Spring or long late winter? 😕
