I am for it. You will probably get hammered here for bringing it up though.

i would imagine that you'll hear opposition from those who only come up a few times a year.

I'm probably trending towards that category OD. Think I fished Erie for steel 3 times last year, maybe 4.

If a steelhead stamp was going directly and specifically to enhancing/improving the fishing on the tribs, I'd probably pay an additional $25-$50 (but prob not more than that).

Shoot, I still buy a now $25 federal waterfowl stamp to hunt ducks or geese once or twice a year.

I'm corn fused. U said "bring it back." Isn't the Erie stamp already in effect? It didn't go away.
And regarding an increase in stamp fees- why would I dump MORE money into a fishing program that is on the decline? Unless they can prove that more funds would have a TANGIBLE impact on gettin more steelies in da creeks and securing more land.

That stamp does a lot more than anything the fish commission would do with a steelhead stamp though, I buy one every year and I haven't gone duck hunting in about 5 or 6 years

i would pay the extra amount ... but would it keep people away and just be a balance anyway?

i think securing land would be best... a lot of fish ppl dont see because they're on private water.

Did the calculations today, 5% smolt survival that means elk has roughly an age class run of 12000 in the fall. go through the divisions down to a day.,.it amounts to Appx 100 fish a day in a 4 month season...

its a losing battle broskis as there are far more than 100 people daily catching.. and id say, Add the ropin in and that gets about 60 of the 100 daily.. that leaves.. roughy 5000 fish a season.. surely not enough to sustain constantly good fishing.. and elks the highest stocked trib....only thing that will make fishing good is when theres more fish than fishermen.. more access doesn't fix that in/out number...increase stockings or gro the smolts larger, do studies , so their survival rate improves.
C&R still doesnt justify 100 fish a day, still isnt enough for the fish to people ratio...
incorporate people management... counties sell out of doe tags guess what so should Erie tribs... oh but deerre arent paid for by hunting licenses... well the people that get their trib stamps early enough b4 sold out get to fish...nuff said

Perry Mason couldn't get something deemed navigable that isn't.

The reason the Little J was deemed so is because it historically was used for trade (a lot of history books describe that use) during the period when the law was written. And even then it was a long, uphill battle that basically resulted in nothing -- wading into that area from a public access point is an ankle breaker and wading out, particularly after dark, is worse.

grow them larger or stock more... good ideas both will cost more money.... either way they will still stay in the good holding water which the majority is on posted property...

Why do you "assume" there is no historical data that would prove Elk Creek could be deemed a navigable waterway ???
Have you researched it yourself ?? Why do you think I suggested a half mill in lawyers fees.. Alot of research can be done for that.. In the end it might well be that it does not meet the criteria to be deemed navigable.. But you can not come to that conclusion without the court battle..

    Sure
Do away with the lake erie stamp we have now.  Do a $50 trib stamp that is dedicated to the steelhead fishery.
Match it with a $50 lake fee for the walleye, perch and bass.
Just so it doesn't go into the general fund and get used for other things i"m good with it.

Because it was researched years ago and except for some minor use to float logs a short distance during high water there was no historical evidence that any of the Lake Erie tribes were navigable for commercial purposes, which is what the law used as a definition.

This was not the case with the Little J which was commercially used for transportation for almost its entire length year round.

The terms "navigable" and "commercial" should be in play here.  If one can prove that some trapper floated down it two hundred years ago is it "proof" that the stream was navigated for commercial purposes at one time?  Or, am I going frog sticking without a light?

then I guess they would have to decide if its worth it.  if they come up 3 times a year that's only 15-20 dollars per trip.  if that breaks the bank, then they shouldn't be fishing for steelhead.

Where are they fishing at in Michigan?   Because the Pere Marquette, Manistee, White and Muskegon right now have better numbers than erie..  I have been catching 5-10 steelhead fishing for kings the last 2 weeks.  Its early also, those numbers will double here in a few weeks... The best part, no crowds and a complete polar opposite class of fisherman compared to Erie....

that's been the norm for Lake Michigan Side for years..  Once the crowds became unbearable in Erie that became my new fall exploration... Catching Kings on thundersticks and rapalas in sept is a blast..

If you're only catching 5-10 steelhead on the Erie tribs right now, you(not you particularly ), for a lack of better terms, you suck.

Arnhead is one of the best anglers I've fished with.
    The other is JiggyJim Stillhead

both those guys could  catch steel from a parking lot mud puddle using a bent fork tied to an anchor rOpe wrapped around a broom handle
