Need some helpful advice Please

Hello everyone.  I have been an avid fisherman since I was a little one.  I fish tagged tourneys for trout in the spring and summer and make the 5 hour drive to Erie in the fall and winter.  I made it to NY once when I was 13.  This is when you could snag the salmon.  I now live in Lock Haven PA, where I am a nursing student and my wife works as a RHD. I want to bring her to NY for a great time this year but we have to come up over columbus day weekend.  We have a 4 day weekend because its fall break.  I already reserved a room.  Now comes the issue.  I need lots of advice because the last time I was there we were using ocean rods with 60 lb test lol.  I know I need to use like 12 lb line.  I am wondering would the same flies that I use in Erie work.  I love to use sucker spawns and minifoos.  Also I have no clue where to take her at up there.  We will be coming up I believe its OCT. 8, 9 and 10.  Well actually leaving PA around midnight on Friday to get up there in time to fish.  I was told to goto Fat Nancys to get my license and flies but not sure what to get as far as flies, and not even sure how much our license will cost.  I would appreciate any advice, I am completely new to this and want to my wife to have a great time so she will go back up again.  Any advice at all would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you very much

Remember they don't take Credit cards for the license-cash only.
Most any tackle shop has the machine for licenses.
Can use the card for everything else.
    It will be crowded.

Thank you R3G3,   I did not know that they only take cash for license I appreciate the advice.  Do you know how much a non resident license is,  I figured it would be crowded, I had to get a room in watertown I believe is the name its like 28 miles away.

Watertown is way north of the SR.I hope you have studs for your boots as they are a must on that river. My go to tackle shop up there is All Seasons,it's right across the street from Fat Nancy. The flies you use in Erie will work, but get some BH pheasant tail and prince nympth's size 10,muddler minnows in black, olive and green size 10.Use flora tippet 8-10 wt.Go to the LFZ and park at the church ,cross the street and fish off the rocks, that would be the best place for your wife to catch one and you won't need to wade.I think a season non resident license is $50.

    Hello pafisher,
Thank you so much for the advice.  I know I would not have problems wading I am 6'1 but she is just under 5ft, so I would worry about her trying to wade.  I will look for those flies also.  Ill have to check that watertown.  When I got on booking.com it said it was only 28 miles from pulaski.  I really appreciate the advice.  I want to make it a nice trip for her.  I have told her stories of the Big Kings I caught as a kids.  I want her to latch in to some.  She does good with the silver bullets.  Again thank you alot

I was not referring to size as being a factor while wading,it;s the slippery rocks and the SR is loaded with slippery rocks and the water can be swift if elevated.6'2" or 5'2" does n't matter it is traction that matters...trust me!

Those rocks and slates can be BAD- even using felt bottoms will  not be enough- gotta use studded boots or corkers with studs.
Many also carry a wading stick.
All can be bought up there at competitive prices.

I have another question going up Columbus day weekend is there a good chance that the salmon will be up higher in the river where it will be easier to not have to cross or do you have to cross no matter where you fish at on the river

    What he said.
As good advice as there is.
The lfz-lower fly zone on the rock wall is the sweet spot for your trip.

I assume the two of you are fly fishing?
Don't let the crowding get to you.
The fish will be there so just keep casting.

If you're fishing the wall, bring a long handled net.

I just realized that we can not fish the LFZ.  Although we fish with flies we use spinning rods.  I have a fly rod set up but my wife has not learned to fly fish yet so I taught her how to tie sucker spawns on and drift them with a small bb weight and a float.  So I will have to find an easier place for her to fish.

A license can be purchased online or on the phone if you don't want to wait in line. Sometimes the computers go down , too.
    http://www.dec.ny.gov/permits/6091.html
The compactor has some tough wading where the fishing is good . Pineville Bridge is a little friendlier to your girlfriend wading. Same for the north side of the river below the 52 bridge in Altmar. A few hundred yds. down is the area called the barrel. All these areas will be CROWDED. Grin and bear it. Go EARLY!   Don't be fooled by the snaggers, watch and you'll see people actually fish, they usually are good about answering questions, as they are the real deal.
I've done well with steel on sucker spawn and a few salmon to boot. Light blue, pink  and  a lime/chartreuse have  been the best colors for me. Sz. 6 with a beadhead for salmon and early steel. Black or brown wooly  buggers also are good. 4 thru 8's.  Any other advice you got from the veterans was golden. Have a great trip!
PS- put your girlfriend above you, you can get her a little longer drift and you can time yours with hers and maybe avoid some tangles with others.

I like light blue and white with a little red for the sucker spawn.

steelies4ever, next year you should consider going west towards Oak Orchard. The fishing is good, but the river is  very easy to wade and you can park at the club grounds. Bathrooms are available there (my wife likes going up there)plus you can buy breakfast and lunch right there.
