NEW STATE RCORD FLATHEAD

Word is that a Flathead Catfish over 50# was taken out of Lake Donegal recently. Supposedly a few pounds over the existing record.Should be something in the papers lately. I heard that he was trolling for Trout when it hit. Nice surprise.   sam

Yup, it's legit, I saw a picture of it myself (nobody would use photoshop, right? Lol). Didn't know the guy caught it trolling for Trout, though! I figured the next state record Flattie would come from the base of a dam on one of the three rivers around Pgh where they get fat on commercial divers :).

They killed it?  You still have to kill the fish to get the record right?  Otherwise I can't imagine the glowing mercury sammiches off that mudpig.  Nice old beast regardless.

Can try & keep alive & record it. Sure many fish (spieces) would be new records but released or just end up on the table without ever a thought or care ov recording a new record.

I remember three years ago I caught a ~25 pound Flathead on a 6' UL Uglystick casting for Bluegill, first/only rod I ever broke, but somehow still landed the fish! Can't imagine latching into a cat over 50 pounds with a stocked trout trolling setup, you'd have to follow it around for hours in the boat lol.

5 pound Pink Salmon I caught last July would've been a record, thought it was a Steelhead until I saw the orange flesh! Still haven't gotten over losing the chance at a state record, but I'm sure many of us have done a similar thing.

My brother while trolling Canonsburg, pulled in a 30# flathead while using a Joe's Fly for trout with 4# line.

and i thought the new record would come from a place with flathead in it... still seems fake to me never seen or heard of anyone catching a flathead from donegal. "This guy" with no name probually took the flathead from a private pond/lake and put it on his boat before even going out to the lake just to try to get in the state records is a more believable story then someone catching a record flathead there.

my buddy and i have been fishing donegal for catfish for years mostly cat fishing at night we have both caught a lot of fish that were nice fish but never thought the state record would come out of there. but i do believe it. not a lot of people fish for big cats at donegal so the pressure isnt there. great catch but i wish we had a system in place where we dont have to kill such a cool fish or any fish for that matter to justify a state record.

I've never heard of flattys in donegal. Do you catch fishable numbers of them in there or is this just a random rare occurrence?

"The PFBC has been stocking Donegal Lake with walleye and channel catfish for many years. One goal of our survey was to assess the survival of the walleye and channel catfish fingerlings and to update management of these species at Donegal Lake. During our survey, we encountered no walleye or channel catfish, and only one saugeye, which were last stocked in 2001."

I wouldn,t be surprised to learn that a "catman" or two have helped the comm. with their stocking program. wouldn,t be hard in this day ,n, age toget a flattie or several on the rivers, put in livewell, take to lake, ,n, release. personally know several who played "baitbucket biologist to bring crappie ,n, walleye to certain impoundment in    my home co. wire.

flatheads in donegal are a rare occurrence for sure. my buddy caught one out of donegal about 5 years ago at night. but no way is anyone catching those in numbers from donegal. i also caught a albino flathead from that lake out there in mt.pleasant. i have a pic of the fish somewhere and my buddy ryan AKA invicta was fishing with me when i made the catch but i was extremely surprised when i landed the fish.i have been night fishing all over the county for about 15 years now. and over the years i have learned that you never know what is on the line or how it got their for that matter until you landed the fish but the state record flathead coming from donegal sounds a little far fetched for me. actually it sounds like total fubar lol

Well if it's a record it should be on the Fish Commish site soon just like that new record Perch. We have some huge Flatheads in Shenango Lake but you rarely hear about them until someone posts a picture. Seen a photo of one in the 40 lb. range years ago but overall you never hear anything about Flatheads in there, but they are there .

Joe Baker sent me that pic a few weeks ago that's a real pig. I wouldn't doubt it they end up in the mix. Look up Lake Rowena on fish comm website, they netted a hog there years ago that wasn't supposed to be there, I think that lake is 13 acres or so. They get big fast in lakes and slower water with little other competition. Although, word has it a 60 plus was pulled from the mon in recent weeks with no documentation but commish saw the pics and said yep looks like a 60 something...wow
