I hit Oneida today and we did pretty good on the perch and sunnys.   That's why we were fishing for. Traffic was like an interstate on the water.

I was up to Redfield last Thursday, there was about 25-30 feet of exposed rock all around the shore, looked to be down 5-6 feet from full pool at the County Route 17 bridge.  My fingers are crossed for the release this weekend, I would like to get up there Tuesday or Wednesday if they don't cancel it.

I would be very surprised if they have a release . There is no real rain in the forecast other then a possible T- storm for the next 10 days .
I am hearing there is a botulism outbreak on the lake right now . Folks are seeing lots of dead gulls and fish . We seen 2 dead floating massive sheepshead

It is that time of year, and the drum are highly susceptible as they feed on the gobies and the mussels.

It has been raining nicely here in Rochester for an hour and a half. As I am now hearing T boomers, it is time to turn the confuser off!

Rained for about 30 minutes and stopped, just enough to get it muggy.  Speaking of Goby,  my friend who works for DEC netting and shocking fish to get counts, said the sturgeon are gorging on them in Oneida and the Oswego river.

Finally got some rain locally,a line of thunder boomers came thru this afternoon and it rained for about a hour,it's better than nothing but what we need is a tropical depression with a two ,three day soaker! So far there is no sign of that but it's getting that time when they should start.
Just today the weather.com is talking about the FIRST tropical depression coming off the coast of Africa. Also the forecast locally is for heavy rain tonight into tomorrow.

Locally here we have been getting the same but all it does is create a massive steam effect and muggy . Our local waterfall is nothing more then the amount of a faucet running . The farm ponds have at least 20' of exposed shoreline .
Yea the bursts are better then nothing but it only seems to keep the weeds thriving .
I wish I could post video , while the grandkids were at the beach ( Selkirk ) sat when we couldn't get out due to high waves , it was GROSS !! T
Massive amounts of alge rolling up on the shore , the kids didn't care but I wouldn't go in .
I can't wait to get back to the Mae

Boy I Miss the Great Lake everyday .. While we don't catch squat , it's always an enjoyable adventure .
Kinda like everyone always says , it's not the catching that brings them to the SR , it's about just being out there . Well for me these past years it's the same only different .
I enjoy the long days of summer , tooling around in my boat in search of a king , spending time along the shores , spectacular sunsets , peaceful solitude of only my tunes playing on the water , jumping into 100 + fow, the kind folks that call that place home .
Did I say I miss the Great Lake already ..

We haven't been driving by as we've been staying up north of there when we've been up, or we would have stopped and said hello!

Week 6
Before I forget , I got some more feedback from the tourney at my marina.
These numbers are not precise but fairly accurate.
aprox 20 plus boats fished outta there sat .. We seen charters and privateers like myself alike going out at 5am..
I talked with the dec later in eve at my dock after all the festivities were done. Aprox. 100 lbs of fish were weighed by the dec.. The breakdown I don't know .,  Any thing in that range would or could have put the salmon take very low figuring angler numbers per fish..  To my understanding , many folks did not catch a fish..
What this means ? , Lots of folks that fished the tourney had a good time regardless and many will do it again..
Sadly I'm always on the outside looking in ..

Now for our weekend adventure:
A guide I know in a tackle shop directed us to head north from SR to Sandy pond.. Honestly that was our plan anyway as Oswego hasn't produced squat for us.  Awoke we were at 5 am sat .. Off the dock after coffee and grub by 6am.. 2-3 foot rollers awaited us at the breakwall and we made the 5 mile trek to 100 fow infront of the SR and headed north.. The tackle/guide musta told everyone the same as that area had the most boats..  At first we just figured that was where the fish were, lol..  Troll troll and troll without a sniff but a building sea..  By 10 am it was 3-4 footers and whitecaps.. We hit 160 fow without any marks, sign or chatter on radio then started trolling the now 8 miles back.. Finally about 1pm we started to pick up for lunch and low behold a skippy coho was drowned on the line.. Oh well, it didn't go to waste for the seagulls .
After a dock reprieve, my 1 friend had enough and left for home.. We decided to head back out around 4pm.. At the breakwall we decided it was just still to bumpy so we played, swam and fished for dink perch on the little SR.. It was fun..
6 pm she lyed down and out we went until dark without moving a rod , marking fish or hearing radio chatter... It was quiet..

Sunday ,
up at 4:30 am off the dock at 5;30 .. Made another plan to head back west and try.. BUMPY solid 3-4 footers greeted us but we grinned and bared things..  Hit the point of Chernobyl and started a troll back .. Rode some rollers and never moved a rod into the east wind waves..
I think we made a mistake by staying deep as other boats seemed to target browns along the protection of the harbor shore .. Also understand the east winds blew all warm water outta the bay, hence the brown trout targeting..

All that said again, Great Trip, Great Adventure and Thankful for the Opportunity ..
Here are just some Lame pics :

I sure hope things change soon out on the big O,what happened to those early reports of decent fish being caught out west, maybe they have n't arrived in the east? If there are no fish in the lake there won't be any in the river.

If I recall correctly out West and possibly even in Canada they may have had 'issues' but nothing like the East end- for whatever reason.

Re: 2016 Great Lake Adventures 2016/08/03 16:46:09 (permalink)
Jack,
I don't know what has happened since those early optimistic reports..  As we seem to agree , the western end of the lake has produced salmon in the spring.. This season they were above the size from the past 2 seasons.. It seems they are still catching fish over there but the size is now becoming those of the last 2 years..
It seemed promising but from my last 3 adventures, it's seeming less so.. I have yet to catch a salmon from Oswego to sandy pond besides that Skippy we drowned..  Guys that are doing "ok" if you can call it that, are putting in many more miles and hours outta my port (mexico) .. The Average Joe like myself are struggling and getting skunked.

So what is happening out there and how to increase my success, I honestly don't know. I see bait but I see bait in 80-100 fow , not over the 100 plus colder water.  I cant even catch a lake trout which is supposed to be easy.. We have tried every trick in my book from dragging bottom to changing lures , depths and heavier weights.. Nothing seems to be working for us..
Some things have crossed my mind..  Should I hire a charter ? Should I move west to another port ? Should I just give up my dock and trailer the boat out in the fall when they are staging ?
One thing that I'm sure is that the lake is clearer then ever before..
At this point I'm still having fun and not ready to pull the plug on the Great Lake Adventures.. I currently have thoughts of buying a much bigger boat in the near future but if the Lake comes to a complete crash then it would be wasted money for me..

If the fish crash its likely only for a couple of seasons till the bait regenerates--boats however may come cheap if that happens.

Erie got really clear  right before the big steelhead crash.  From what they said back then, it was the zebra mussels filtering all of the plankton and collapsing the food chain.  Hope it comes around soon.

I have to throw out a public apologies to db and Clint . After lasts week azz whopping from the lake and fish , I sadly will cancel this weekends adventure .
3-5 foot waves sat and 1-3 on sun predicted , I'm feeling like it might be tough going .
Personally , I have only spent 1 weekend at my house since striper season , I'm gonna have to pull the plug and do house chores .
That said , family booked a few campsites next thurs - Sunday up there so I will be at the Mae then .
As well , I'm hoping the best fishing is yet to come ( can't get worse ) and plenty of opportunities as well .
Sorry guys and see you soon

The offer was gracious and I am sure we will make it out. I too would prefer to not get kicked around.  Get them chores done HT so when it picks up you will be free and clear of the Honey do list.

I love this thread and thanks for all the info from everyone.

what I've heard...... Fishing was good for salmon until past week.  Weather and wind changed and fished disappeared. Reports from west and Canada are still optimistic though.  This person said he thought fishing should be much better than last two years but not back to "normal".   What's "normal"? I guess it's differs for everyone fishing the resource.

Anyway, thanks again for this thred.

Full report sometime when I return .
Last night it was FLAT , we went swimming , we went fishing . Caught zilch as usual but had my best marks of the season .
Staging salmon ? I don't know about that quite yet .
Today was a solo trip . A bit bumpy and no signs of life , fish or fishers out there ( 8 miles from port ) .
Like I said , fishing is secondary

Who wants to fish with the chartist?  We'll start it right with trip through McDonald's drive through...Then, hit the church hole, north side of course...At lunch, we'll dine at the Altmar Hotel with a sumptuous meal washed down with Genny Cream Ale.  Then, back to the church hole.  We'll close it out with happy hour at, you guessed it, the Altmar Hotel for some pot luck.
