What the hell?  I looked in my email and I didn't see my invite.  Then again... I'm pretty sure yesterday qualified as "hurricane strength wind" and today it **** SNOWED.  Rain check!

Weather ain't looking good for no rides on the Shenango buddy, at least not til next week.  Temps. ain't gonna be pretty and the wind doesn't plan to play well with others.  I'm wondering how it is, when the weather forecast calls for super suck weather conditions, the weather dudes are always right????

Last report I saw on the Facebook page (03/30/16(must have shut down til summer)) said water temp. was at 50 and they put the plug back in the bottom of the lake cause it was full.

We will just have to abide the time, you continue with your boat project and I'll keep working with the door to nowhere.  I just hope when I do get it open, there ain't a rabbit wearing a dam hat, sitting there!

I'm late..... for a very important date, gotta git!!

Good deal Chauncy and congratulations, next week looking good for us fair weather anglers so, I hope to be on Shenango.  Might even invite that guy calls himself Zelie Sam.   This time I hope he remembers to bring a coat...... and shares the "I'll buy the bait" bucket this time.   Just kidding Sam... ya really don't have to wear a coat.

You don't use bait anyway, you big fibber.  And of course the first "nice" day this week I'll be in Florida.  Though hopefully catching enough spanish mackerel to sink the pier.  When I get back though... ARTHUR TIME!

OK.......  yesterday I get to the Shenango Rec. Area boat launch at 3:00 PM and there is exactly one vehicle with trailer in the parking lot.  So, I get home last night and not wanting to "spot burn" I report my venture and success on a completely different thread.

Today I get to the launch sight at 3:00 PM and there is 15 vehicles with trailers in the parking lot.

So which one of you guys........  dropped the dime? lol

I fared today about as well as I did yesterday but some boats, reported some success while others, did worse than me.  Now that there ain't good, I don't care who ya are!!

They say  news travels by several means; 1. Internet 2. Telephone; 3. Telegraph; 4. Tell-A-Fisherman.  Plus, Shenango is a big deep lake with the catching occurring in some areas before happening in others and, I didn't say a word about Golden Run.

Anybody doing anything on Shenango Lake ? Seems like I'm fishing the Dead Sea lately !
Nothing but some small Stripers and a few Catfish so far.
Walleye seem to be an endangered species.
Can't wait to hear the Fish Commission report on the next biologist report on future Walleye numbers here.
After all they tossed in a whopping 1,800 fingerlings last year !
I'm sure five years from now the lake should be just teaming with legal Walleye !

Got a very reliable source that is catching good size crappies but not in large numbers. Trolling crank baits is working for him. I've been fishing over at mosquito lately and doing alright. I get bored trolling inland lakes so after an hour or so I'm done. I'm back to fishing deep brush and doing alright.

Brock ya gotta look at the good point, no more launch fees at Shenango Lake.   Apparently, those launch fees are why people stopped using the lake.  I'm pretty sure the reason given for stopping the charges was to promote more usage of the lake.  Wasn't there a launch fee years ago when the lake was heavily used?

Hmmm, I wonder, why the usage has dropped the past few years and are the people making these decisions, walking around on their elbows?

Yea John it's still fairly busy just too many wake producing crafts at times. I usually go very early or very late to avoid all the race boats. It's nice without the launch fees but many people never paid regardless. I asked about that a few years ago when I bought my yearly passes and she said it's mainly an honor system. We trust people to pay ! Here I am buying a pass every year or paying as needed and Joe Doe is sneaking in without paying for years and nobody cares !  Oh well that's all over for now .

Re: SHENANGO RIVER LAKE 2016 2016/06/24 18:22:33 (permalink)
Hit the water at 9:30 and started the day tossing 1/16 oz  jigs fitted with various colored and sizes of tubes.  No one color or size seemed to work better than another but the presentation certainly did.  Vertically dancing or dragging and hopping the jig directly on the bottom produced the most catches but, the bite was not aggressive, occasional lifting the rod tip in quick snaps caused the hook-ups.

The Helix and 541 were both showing fishy pictures with most being in 13 to 15 FOW and at various depths but, I caught nothing unless I was touching the bottom.

My initial plan was to catch some Crappie then troll lead core just to see if I could snag a sunken boat or sumthin but I scrapped that idea, as it seemed, the lake was getting busy with shirtless old hairy dudes running their big boats with loud motors.

Sometime around 3:00 PMish I cinched the Fish Hawk to her bunks and grabbed some gears en-route to the house.

PS.  I did stick with my 12 fish limit per outing, I just pretended, I went out twice today.

Today's catch.............................

  I'm so happy............

Thank you Captain, it is great to be able to go fishing but a fun time, when fishing turns into catching.

Now if I can turn a great time Walleye fishing into fun time. I'm sure gonna give it a try tomorrow.

If you are looking for something to do today, check the the lake's Facebook page, looks like Christmas in July will be celebrated starting at 3:00 PM today.  There has been, in years past, a great time of decorating boats and fireworks to end the day.

Unfortunately, the Facebook page also advise's of a rash of vehicle break-ins occurring.

Re: SHENANGO RIVER LAKE 2016 2016/09/07 22:28:27 (permalink)
It was a dark and stormy night..........  well okay, it was 5:00 pm in the afternoon but thunder was rumbling to my North when I pulled the Fish Hawk from her birth in the Mancave.  Our destination, Shenango River Lake  off of route 18 at Clark, PA. where the boat ramps don't meet the docks.

This trip was extra special as I had the honor and privilege of being accompanied by a retired Sergeant Major of the U.S. Army who I am also proud to have as my neighbor.

We shoved off at around 6:00 PM and set course for the ______ bridge (sorry no spot burning) where we put the Humminbird into action, to no avail.  Still, jigs were tossed here, there and, everywhere before leaving to search for the elusive stupid fish elsewhere.  Upon arrival in another area the Humminbird was once again put into action, to no avail and again followed by tossing jigs here, there and everywhere, to no avail.

The sun was now setting and setting fast so it was off to yet another hot spot where we said to hell with the Humminbird, and just started tossing jigs here, there and, everywhere....... to no avail.  By now the sun was set and dark was fast approaching, so we said to hell with the jigs, Humminbird and, the stupid fish as we put the Fish Hawk back on her bunks and pulled her from the waters of the Shenango River Lake, where the ramps don't meet the docks.

PS  The water surface temperature was hitting 83 degrees F when we first arrived.  After sundown we were seeing the reading at 81 on two different Humminbirds.

PSS. No live bait, nor was any stupid fish, injured during the making of this stupid story.

Well I guess that's fishing. We were out at 6:30 AM. Yes AM. This morning. We put 15 keepers of 10" crappies in the box. Of the water by 11. Got hot pretty quick so we got the heck out of there. BTDT, find the brushpiles in 12 ft water.

Thank you Chauncy, greatly appreciated.   I know what you are saying about the heat, even after 6:00 PM we were working up a serious sweat sitting in the shade, just casting.   Congrats on your catching, I think most of the local anglers on this forum would agree, right now catching is pretty tuff so, when we hear you with your positive reports, it's a inspiration to do it again in the morning.     Wellll after-morning for some.  Thanks again, tight lines and good times.

Anyone know float times between Pymy dam and the kayak launches down to Shenango Lake? I've fished down as far as Greenville and there's no stupid fish in there either. Thanks.

Re: SHENANGO RIVER LAKE 2016 2016/09/09 13:44:09 (permalink)
Yea , that lower section of river below Pymatuning ( upper Shenango ) has gone down hill bad as far as fishing. Since the Fish Commission stopped stocking that with Walleye and Musky it's been just about dead ! A lot of timber in that lower section too.
Too bad it's held some good fishing years past.

They have also done some nice work around the outflow with construction of that handicap pier, and walk over bridge, and trails along the river. Just not much to catch from our experience and others I know. They should just go ahead and stock Trout there too and make someone happy!
