No, you don't need downriggers. If you just have dipsies then send a few out one side and a few out he other. Or you could do half dipsies and half planer boards or flatlines to get some crankbaits in the mix. This early in the year I would assume fish shallow until the water heats up. Michigan Stingers are always the hot lure for me over by the mountain, again being this early I'd fish the standard and scorpion sizes. Move to larger sizes later in the year as the fish go deeper, I even got a nice Pink or Chinook (maybe a Pinook?) Salmon last July trolling a stinger. Good luck and let us know how you do, hoping to start our season towards the middle of the month.

This is actually our second year trolling and we only used downriggers last year (adding dipsies and boards to the spread this season) but let them as far out as necessary to get them to your desired depth. This early I'd say fish 8-40 FOW, we caught them as deep as 133 FOW last summer though, but that's for later in the year.

If you want steelhead this weekend troll in or outside the bay. Not northeast. Reef runner 500's on boards and spoons on boards.

The steelhead just arnt around and schooled up this time of year. We pull a lot of spoons in the spring off northeast for lakers and never catch any steelhead. Sometimes walleye and smallmouth but never steelies.

You might want to try trolling shallow stick baits off boards in close and pick up some browns.  They should be nearshore now.  Not a TON of them but they have been stocking them since 2009.

If you've never fished the mountain keep an eye on your depth.  They don't call it the mountain for nothing.  I might google some maps that show the terrain under that water.

Good luck to you! Hopefully I can get out next weekend, at least there's local stream trout for this one, though.
