Smallmouth In Creeks

When can we expect smallmouth in the left over steelhead holding grounds? Has anyone ever caught both in one day? Choice of flies?

I'm not sure when they come up, but last June was great for us. The lower sections of several tribs were full of big 14-20" fish on nests and they were tight-lipped, but could still be convinced to take a bucktails jig with enough movement and time.

Well, given that the smallies were on their nest, and spawning temperature for the bronzeback is a average 64-68 degrees F. my guess would be water temps. somewhere between mid fifties and mid sixties, smallies will be moving shallower.

And yes, while tight lipped during the spawn/nesting, bass will pickup and move anything coming into contact with their nest which, most other nesting fish will also do.

We catch them in Early may to mid June with some hold overs into fall.
Yes I have caught both in the same day and nobody else was on the creek other than my wife.
Secret bait, I can't tell you about the yellow roostertail.

FYI, it is illegal to cast to bass on nests is Pennsylvania.

Target the non-spawning fish in the deeper areas.

True, but very hard to enforce. I can't say I have heard of anyone getting in trouble over it yet. Just look at PI bay in mid to late may.....it is what everyone is kind of doing in a way.

Per the rule book, "It is unlawful for an angler to cast repeatedly into a clearly visible bass spawning nest or redd in an effort to catch or take bass." Key word is repeatedly.

For what it's worth, while I do fish during the spawn, I've never had much luck with fish on visible nests anyway.

got lucky once in late May on upper Connie (Ohio side)
landed a 3 pound smallie to go with some  steel I was catching
Chucking a blue mariboo jig if i recall

Here's one for the books though...my friend caught a smallie and a steelie on the same drift
Steel on sucker spawn and smallie on the jig dropper ..and landed them both  ..fo-reel
