Spring is in the air, or maybe just the "January Thaw", temperature bottomed out at 11` F. at my little place in the Pennsylvania Wilds last night and now it's 24` F. and climbing.  Weather dude says "mostly sunny" til noonish then getting cloudy with a high temperature of 47` F. today.

Spring is in the air.....  ya know that sounds like there could be a song in there and, speaking of songs;  did I ever tell yinz about me singing tenor in the choir?  Yep, every Sunday I was asked to sing 'ten-or' 12 miles down the road.  I gotta go, there's a wind schooner for sale down the road and it reminds me of the one I lost.

Good luck Clint hope ya catch a bunch tomorrow.

I'm looking at 51 degrees as I speak and the only snow remaining on the the ground is that which was shaded from the low southern sun. Mostly cloudy now but the sun sure was out in full force earlier today and I have to say I enjoyed every minute of it.

Speaking of the snow remaining on the ground we need to remember the ice will be affected in the same manner, during this warm spell and, for days after.  The northern shore lines certainly can be affected before the southern shore lines that might, be protected from direct sun.

Tread lightly over next several days my fellow hard water anglers, drowning will undoubtedly, ruin somebody's day.

Oneida lake is scary right now and I will not venture out, the ice there ranges from 8 to 1 inch with pressure cracks and gas pockets everywhere.  I will be heading up north. This warm up will put Oneida in the terrifying category and anyone going out next weekend is not playing with a fuil deck

Fantastic day in the north country on ice . Never got above freezing ( holes would ice over ) and there was 8-10" over 80 fow .
Fishing was great on the short pole ( pics tomorrow) .
Now a nice 50 deg here in the low lands tomorrow with the grandkids on the secret lake will be the icing on my weekend :)

Even with the warm up / rain . The north country will hold solid ice until March :)

I'm thinking Jan 90 gave us weather such as we are having at this time then, WHAMO snow through the end of March.

But, I'll stand to be corrected on the year.............

48 degrees, wind south at 10 Mph and, raining as I tip the coffee cup this morning.  Weather dude says I should see the temperature pushing high fifties and the WSW wind should sustain the 20 MPH mark today, for my piece of the Pennsylvania Wilds.  Ice has melted off the beaver pond and the geese are circling the area, not in a flock but, in multiple groups of pairs making more noise and dropping more crap than a political convention.

Update:  Looking at the flag pole, and a quick check with the anemometer, weather dude is right about the wind speed today.

We have a long way to go.  I guess some of you forgot the big snow we got on March 31-April 1, 1997 when power was out throughout the northeast for a week or more in some areas.
Enjoy the respite while you can.

I work EMS in a rural area, I remember those late winter blizzards Very well!! I am enjoying the comfortable working temps but in another way I do wish it was just a bit colder to keep the ground harder, this mud is horrible and the 'mud season' of winter/spring conversion is my least favorite time, usually only a few weeks but looking to be much longer this year. Dogs and chickens are constantly muddy!

Agree fisherlady, mud season is my least favorite. Makes waters and the house ugly.
Give me hope for things to tighten up . Light rain all day , temps up north are still not terrible with high 30's and 20's at night . Takes a lot to melt 10"ice but getting on is the question.

Ah , crap.. Wrong thread ..
Darn weather , lol
Hope everyone enjoys it however they can

Mid 50s yesterday with a bit of a late drizzle- mid 40s about 9 PM.
This morning woke to a heavy snow falling- bout 2  inches already.
The kind that sticks to all the wires and trees after a rapid temp drop while things are all wet .
Pretty, but  built a fire in the stove awaiting any possible power outage.

Not much going in here weather wise. It seems most of The ice held. Oneida is sketchy at Best though. lots of pressure cracks that Are too Big to step over. I think getting on that lake this year May be difficult

Inch an hour till bout 1 PM-slippery and darned near white out at times-got about 8 but was horrific to drive in being so slippery underneath (even with 4w).
Lost a huge pine branch bout 12 inches around- right into the brook through my yard.

We got a couple inches, just enough to make you break out the shovels.  Heavy wet snow underneath due to the surface being warm.  Temps dropped around 2 p.m. so roads will be slick tonight, beware of the black ice.
I also got an alert from NYSDEC about thin or soft ice conditions throughout the state.  For all those hitting the hard water this weekend be careful.

I have yet to shovel any snow and that's the way I like it .
Temps did drop down to 17 degs last night and should tighten up those open shorelines again.
Going to take a break on the ice and give it some more time to rebuild.
Probably get bored by tomorrow though and might see how my local puddle fared tomorrow

40 degrees and partly sunny then becoming partly cloudy ()  today, in the NW Pennsylvania Wilds.  Tomorrow to bring more sunshine along with temperatures in the mid forties that will fall to the upper thirties on Monday.  Drop in the highs to continue through midweek with a high of 18 degrees forecast before rebounding to the mid forties by the weeks end.

Nice to see everyone carrying along. Btdt, 2007 was very similar weather pattern wise as this one has been thus far on the eastern shore/tug hill region... mid February came along and record snowfall totals for single event were broken in both parish and redfield... 147" for redfield and I believe 110" for parish. I'm very interested to see what happens when this upcoming Arctic air event comes across that 4 degrees above average surface temps :/

Andy -read a Great Lake report on the putor a day or two ago saying only about 4% icing on the lakes this season compared to the 94%  the last two years, according to the article.
It said that Lake Effect storms could be worse due to the lack of ice.

Re:Weather thread 2016/02/06 11:08:40 (permalink)
Spot on trevor, which is why I'm shocked we haven't gotten it too bad yet. I had 4-5 foot of snow pack in my backyard last year at this time. Only a fresh 2 inches from last night at the moment. I'd be surprised if we got more than 60" thus far. This upcoming Arctic air event may be the ice breaker though. In all honesty, after two winters in a row that were both riddled with record lows and pounding snow fall, most everyone in the region is completely content with this winter so far. Coming up on mid February now... but as we know, mid February to beginning of April could be a pounder with the current lake conditions. I've read quite a few articles on how El Nino has already peaked and is currently waning. That lake is large and warm. I'll be shocked if we don't get a dose of heavy lake effect between now and april

BTDT ,
My bro in law is slamming the walleye today out at our deer camp near Oneonta .
Clear 6" black ice . I'm bummed to no end as I backed out on that weekend trip .
Might just jump in the truck and spin the wheels at 6 am tomorrow.
No worries in upstate NY , the ice is here to stay for awhile yet :)

Db,
I'm glad you guys are getting a reprieve this year , much needed :)
I keep staring at my boat everyday and dream of those Great Lake adventures. Hope it plays nice this season
