How to fish JIGS???

This may seem like a stupid question, but i'm throwing it out there anyway!  How do fish a JIG for steel.  I'm new to the steel (2/08) but have seen and heard of people crushing fish on JIGS, I've tried a few but to no avail dead drift, tipped with minnows or wax wrm, and of course jigging.  Any advice? Colors?

Wait until the water clears.

Cast across and DOWN stream.

Hold rod tip high and jig, keep the jig in front and above the fish.

No stupid questions on here just stupid people! LOL

Jigs are very effecteve expecially when the water is low and clear and everyone else thinks it is "unfishable"  These are my favorite conditions to fish for steelhead.  As the above post states keep the jig in front of the fishes mouth as long as possible while bouncing your rod tip as fast as you can keep the jig in a steady rythm.     My personal favorite aproach is to cast upstream and bounce the jig down, allot of times you will get one to chase and then you can target that fish after you have retrieved and 9 times out of 10 if you stick with him long enough you will get him to open his mouth and take the jig.

A good pair of polarized glasses is key for jig fishing this way, I have also found that different days Males are much more aggressive towards jigs than females and vice versa.  I think it may have something to do with the water temperature but I honestly have no clue!  if you work your jig down through the hole and find a fish that doesnt move out of the way more times than not you can catch that fish.   Just keep jiggin and as always practice makes perfect!

small mini foos have worked for me.  I don't use them as much as I used to, but they do tend to get a reaction from some fish, more so than other baits or flies.  Ive seen fish chase them down, its kinda fun to watch.

Can this be done on a flyrod, I've never jigged before. I'm trying to picture it.

Would I have to just stand above the fish and jig it or can it be done fly casting utilizing a technique of some sort?

Yea it can most of my jigs are tied on 1/32 oz to 1/124oz and are jigs heads most flyshops carry. But heavier 1/8 and 1/16 oz. are popular too. I have to use  split shot under my float or a weighted float to get it out in the flow with my spinnin' outfit. With a flyrod the weight of the line generates the energy not the weight of the jig.  Just use a small dime sized foam float. I mainly use a spinnin rod for jig fishin, just more verisitility, so I can use a jig from 1/8 to 1/124th, sometimes they just want a bigger jig (@night or stained or high water). If you go any lighter that 1/32 oz. watch your hooks on your jigs, threre pretty light. they'll and up costing you fish.

See you  guys out there.

This may not be the proper way to fish jigs, but i fish em like i do for bass. Twitch.....twitch.....pause......reel the slack and repeat. I usually get most of my hits on the pause. I creamed em Sunday on walnut with this method.

So with jigs I guess you can float fish them or "jig" them.  Any one tip the jig with anything like waxies or eggs?  Anyone use the small rubber worm/minnow type jig?  Why does a jig work?  You always hear to get the perfect drift but jigging would be the opposite of that.  Does it imitate a minnow that a drift doesn't matter?

yes, yes, yes, because just about any fish will hit a jig due to its action and ability to stay in the strike zone, you can drift a jig too, and I don't know about the last question.

I've never tried to just jig them, but I fish mine under a float with waxies in the deeper pools and it seems to work well.

If your serious, some of these videos will get ya started and after ya finished tying, search "fishing Jjigs" for a bunch of how to's and what for's.

PS.  What ever you tie for Capt. Hook, make double for me.  From his pictures, I'd bet he knows which type to use where.

I don't think ShutUpandFish checks these boards much anymore, but could be wrong.

I'd venture to say that most of those are marabou with flash.  Other synthetic hairs work well too, and don't have to worry about the dyes running into other colors.  SU&F is a great craftsman (musky lures look amazing), for that, I can only assume that he paints his own.  But, buying prepainted will save you a ton of time.  Bare lead heads work too.

Fly tying vise and a thread bobbin (with thread), nice pair of scissors, and head cement (Sallie Hansen - Hard as Nails clear coat) are about all you need, besides the jig heads and material.

Most of my "steelhead" jigs get used for panfish, but they both enjoy them.  Good strong hook as mentioned is better when steelhead fishing.

Only thing I caught steel on last year . I live in boro but every time I could go the water was extremely low and clear , I'd creep along holes looking for the aggressive fish in bunch cast upstream and twitch it past. Generally theyed nail it within 3 casts if they would at all. Switching colors frequently helps as well .

I don't think the "one fly" is still happening. Hasn't for a couple years. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

Re: RE: How to fish JIGS??? 2015/09/04 22:48:49 (permalink)
Funny story about jigs. I was fishing Elk Creek way up stream near Follies years ago and caught an average size hen Steelhead. When I removed my hook to release the fish I noticed a nice olive green hand tied colored jig in the corner of the mouth. I removed the jig and pinned it to my upper vest for a souvenir to display along with other fly's, glo bugs, streamers. and stuff I find in and on fish I catch. About three weeks later while fishing for Steelies I came across another fisherman and as we were talking he says " Hey were did you get that olive jig on your vest " ? I told him the story and he says..." that's my favorite Steelhead jig I recognize my style of work". He kind of laughed about me saying it's mine now ! He said no problem just don't show it off too much it's a hot color pattern that I keep secret. What are the chances of bumping into the guy that tied that jig I found three weeks earlier..........weird !
