Re: Swap 2015/09/07 19:58:38 (permalink)
Whew !!! , Don't count me out Charlie, mine are done and will be heading your way tomorrow ..
I will admit it was a struggle for me.. I haven't tied in a very long time and realized my skills and eyesight has diminished greatly.. Had 1/2 the batch of salmon flies done and was completely not happy with any of the things I tied so went back from scratch..
I know most fish the mid-upper river so I tried to keep that in mind and stuck to more natural colors and adding enough movement in the fly to entice the strike..
The other 7 are a steelhead scud pattern that has worked well for me ..
Given that, I didn't just take a pipe cleaner and wrap it on a 1/0 hook , I believe each fly and pattern has at least 3 or more materials incorporated in them..
I also was not very proud of my sloppy skills so I'm throwing in 7 of my go to SRS steelhead streamer pattern that I have had un used in my fly boxes.. Most of you guys have already received this pattern but a few of the guys here have not so they are just extra to share and I wish nothing extra in return..
Thanks again for putting this together and waiting on a lazy bum like myself.. Looking forward to seeing what others fish and tie one on my line :
Peace & Tuna

Rich that is the same way I felt when I picked up my bobbin. Felt  like I could not see and I was all out of sorts. You know as well as me that the fish don't care if they are close. I probably did a dozen of each and picked out the best ones and even those I knew were not the same quality I have done before. The extra will go in my box and still fish fine. It's gonna be like Christmas soon opening up the box.

sakes alive !!!I stop at the post office and there is classical music blasting inside !!
so I look around for some sort of package to put my flies in and everything is either to big or to small so I YELL back to the woman and ask if they have something to put this in.. she whips out this crappy envelope and stuffs a ton of plastic wrap and seals it then starts taping it closed > I'm like WTF !! Oh no worry she said, it will be fine.. that wasn't my worry so much. I wanted to put return postage in the envelope before she just started doing her fabulous tape job on the cheesy envelope..
sorry brother, it's been sent, I will catch you next time..

Re: Swap 2015/09/08 17:44:54 (permalink)
I said I'd pay up front, but thanks to those who sent the return postage!
I'll have them mailed   back out , likely, next Monday.  I'll take a group picture for lurkers who wish to see flies that are actually fished. It's a varied bunch, and shows the different histories, influences and styles people have learned on the river. Looking at the group and thinking about how many fish those patterns have caught and how much the fish they caught were enjoyed and even treasured is just plain awesome.  It's one thing to participate in swaps of trout flies where you get a bunch of little fluffy things that can virtually interchange; totally another with a swap like this for fish that are  measured in pounds not inches and can take you to school, make you **** near cry, and forge memories that last a lifetime. I have a   coffee can of flies that I've gotten in swaps. Mostly, they sit in the can and I give them to  new fly fishers  on trout rivers  or when I meet someone who needs them. I've donated lots to Project Healing Waters. The flies from this swap will go in my go- to -the -river -and-fish-my-azz-off-box.  nuff said, Thanks again.

Well said Charlie I can't wait to see what I get. And to fish them. With the experience from all these tiers if there are fish in the river I'd like to think there will be no skunk for us. Best of luck hope everyone enjoys.

All good , I know your post charlie its just my nature and had a bad experience in the P.O. Right down to the envelope .
Pretty confident that when I get back from Mickey Mouse land I will be ready to wet some of those flies with the crew .
We will have to revisit our dates and make a plan

A gathering would be great, i'll be up this week end and over columbus day for sure.

Re: Swap 2015/09/10 17:00:30 (permalink)
Well I just walked on my porch and checked the box. They were there.
The other day, I was telling Wayne about a technique  I like to use called swymphing by West coasters, that involves fishing a fly as if it were a nymph in the beginning of a drift, then changing tactics and swinging it at the bottom. Not lifting, as in the standard SR floss maneuver, but as in throwing mends and giving  some slack to actually get a good crossing presentation. Your patterns look like they were designed for that, Andy. Thanks.

Re: Swap 2015/09/10 17:19:10 (permalink)
Fichy, something tells me you and I could share a portion of water with only 10 feet between us while we both manage to fish 50-60 foot of line without bothering each other. you basically explained a common method of mine thats been a staple of mine from a very young age on even stream trout... Never heard of the name swymphing but it makes sense. It is a deadly method and often when Ive rotated with other folks that technique was a high success when rotations took place. Often in the first or second cast. Switch rods compliment the technique very well. Those patterns work very well fished that way. Hope everyone has success with them. They are fairly simple to tie as well.

Just a heads up, the larger fly with fox tail is for earlier season and higher water while the smaller is for winter months ... But both can produce either time of year

We could and hopefully will, Andy. Wayne and I fished on Clint's rock 5' from each other and did well last fall.  Wayne took the nymphing seam, I took a short swing in the tail. Both produced fish.

The raffle winner was BigBear and he will receive a leather bound, parchment paper fishing log.
Just remember, there's a second part to this swap folks- now we got to fish 'em. I dedicated a section of one of my boxes to the swap flies. I'll use them wherever i feel they'll work. First person to catch a salmon or steel on one of the swap flies not their own will win some ceramic nippers and some flouro tippet.  Please try to get a pic if you can, otherwise we'll go on the honor system if you have a good corroborating story.  Looks like we beat the run with the swap, I'll get them out as soon as I can.
