FEE INCREASE

Just saw a text from my neighbor stating hunting license fees going up next year.  Anyone confirm that or know by how much?

I TRY to stay on top of such things, but this is the last official thing I heard.

Of course, just because it is going to happen doesn't mean the people need to know anything about it.

yeah, when I first heard this I found the same article on the proposed increase.  If they did approve it when was the meeting when they would have voted on it?

That article was from back in March... I do NOT think we will see any action on this from the legislature this year... ??

There is no recent movement in the legislature for a fee increase.

"The proposal, which will require legislative approval, would boost an adult resident hunting license by $20 over five years. The current $19 fee would increase by $10 in the first year and then by $5 in the third and fifth years, pushing the total cost to $39.

Fees for most other resident and non-resident licenses also would increase over the same timetable. The price of an adult non-resident license would double to $200, but the cost of junior resident and non-resident licenses and senior resident licenses would not change".

That should thin out the number of hunters a bit more. Should make the Audubon happy as lately the money seems to be going  to the programs they support. Could also give the PGC employees the 20 and out they were after. I'll bet it won't do much for the ring necks or other pro hunting projects.

Yep. I agree. Bloated pensions and benefits yet again rearing its ugly head within the public sector. All a fee increase will do is pay retirees and allow others to go out way before private sector employees can even dream of doing so. It will also cause some hunters to hang it up.

Gotta create job vacancies for the young and upcoming biologist that will soon be graduating from Penn State.  If it weren't for the PGC and PFBC, where would these people ever find jobs?

Don't know what your total fees are in PA but for a comparison here is Ct==
As a Senior I get a free inland and marine fishing tag as well as firearm small game.  Savings of about  30 to 40 bucks.
After small game each hunt is  tag is ala-cart.
Soooo today I purchased Private land rifle, muzzle loader and archery Deer tags as well as a firearm Fall Turkey- total--$98.
Still to come will be State land Shotgun and Muzzle loader--passed on Spring Turkey-Would all be bout another $60 depending on exactly what I picked up..
       That's for a resident.
Also each piece of Private Land hunted requires a landowner signed  permission slip on a State form- so pre season ya gotta drive all over the state getting stuff signed when the landowner is gonna be available.
And ,of course, ya have to go to School for Firearm Hunting and Archery and have your State ID numbers available whenever buying a tag.
All those Deer tags get ya about 12 possible Deer harvests- and about 5 Turkey. If you would ever want to take that much game.
In one area I have this year the replacement tags for Deer are pretty much unlimited.
Am happy with one or two a year so all those possibilities are kinda irrelevant but its nice to be able to participate in all the seasons.
Kind of a take one decent one and wait for a monster the rest of the year attitude.

From the chart,  if a fee increase is approved, I'd guess we're about to see a substantial decrease with antlerless allocations.

Well I can see the chart was written by a politician and has the typical PGC math.
The totals assume that the # of hunters doesn't change and then they adjust the total by 3% . Without digging up numbers I think the last time they raised fees the number of hunters dropped by 15-20%.

I hear ya Mike and it's obvious that no genius produced the chart but, I can't see a politician writing such stupid crap..... most likely a biologist.

To me the recent changes in the doe hunting and a proposed cost increase for doe tags shows "there is light at the end of the tunnel".  I just hope we're close to the end of that tunnel and there is no whistle behind that light!

Well, going to hold off on buying a crossbow and if this passes will eventually be selling my inline.  Never, (ya here that PGC?), NEVER going to pay these tag prices.  $30 for archery, $30 for muzzle on top of a $39 hunting license?  AIN'T HAPPENING!  And tell me game commission, that $10 migratory stamp, you send that money to Washington right?  After all, these are federal birds.  Can't believe the state gets away with that one.  Was that ever fought?

I agree that we can certainly expect to see a reduction in sales to a certain extent and that should have been considered.  For discussion purposes, if we do consider a 20% reduction across the board in number of permits/licenses sold, the expected resident license fee revenues for next year will still increase by approximately $6M or 24%.

I understand that the point of their release was to provide general information about the increase, but they could have at least made somewhat reasonable assumptions before they published it.  Also, the comparisons that they attempted to draw with the cost of licenses in other states are bogus.  They made no effort to understand what it was they were actually comparing and failed to consider the different licensing sale structures of other states.

Not to "stir the pot" but to relate some personal experiences because we sell licenses at the hardware where I work ....

as R3G3 stated many other state's fees are MUCH higher then ours  , even if you LIVE THERE ....

Every year I get to sell about 15 out of state licenses to about that many hunters from that many states.. at 1st I was AMAZED at some of the states that have hunters coming here...there are only about 8 states that are not on our list of out-of-states sales in the 6 years I have been there...... last year I even had to process one with a **** from DENMARK ...

90% of those hunters say by comparing resident license fees  ==Pa is by far "the best "deal"

Some of them have to buy a "tag" for almost every species they can hunt there ...

BUT ===  that said === Pa does NOT need any license fees increase .....

just sell more doe tags ... LOL .....

West Virginia "CLASS X" resident license = hunting+trapping+fishing license.    Fee for all inclusive license that permits archery rifle and muzzleloading trapping and fishing.   No added "permits" needed to hunt every stinking season.   Not positive, but might even include bear also.

    Total cost?    $35.

Now do the math for Pennsyltucky here for a general license + archery stamp + muzzleloading stamp + trapping license + fishing license and get back to me on what a great bargain we have here at well over 100 bucks!   Then just for chits and giggles add in the proposed fee increases for both hunting and fishing licenses here on top of what we pay now and compare to that intolerable $35 Wv has to deal with for everything . lol.

And as for the super-duper sportsmen farce license proposed, you'd still be getting less for the money than now, and certainly less than states like WV where they not only still get more included with the license, but it would still be less than 1/3 the cost for West Virginians. lol.

Whatever the case Doc, and no matter what you or anyone else thinks of the "deal" right now, we are not exactly giving away licenses free compared to everyone else as the game commission suggests to legislators.    And ours will be significantly higher than most states for similar resident fees, no matter how you look at it, if the proposed fee structure kicks in.

Given the gas money along with the long term fractured relationship with the agency and hunters, as well as the fact they are among the most well funded agencies already in the entire nation for game management, I find it downright laughable that any legislator hoping to be re-elected would even consider such a thing.    I have only discussed this with 2 legislators since the most recent talks on this issue and neither have any intention of touching this with a ten foot pole.    Will their view represent a majority vote?   I guess we will find out soon enough in the next year or two.

Bunch of 'effin whiners.  PGC is WAY past due for a license increase.  Maybe not as much as proposed here but, we have it good here compared to many other states.

I agree with you and have no issues with the increased cost.  I just found it mildly irritating that the PGC put out such an awful press release to announce their plan.

We all have options.   Those of us who don't support a fee increase are free to express those views.    As for any pgc brownnosers, well they have options as well.  Several monetary denominations to choose from to fit any budget.

See?  The current situation is fine as-is.

As for "time"   I don't care if its 2 years or 20 between fee increases.   Either they have the money from various sources to get the job done or they don't.  Currently they do.   Its just unfortunate they don't do so in a more responsible manner.

Maybe if they had more money they could donate another quarter mil to hawk mountain, or give an exec director a nice retirement package? lol.  Btw, anyone hear anything more about that Carl Roe deal?   He was supposedly suing.   What ever came of this?   Did he ever get a settlement from pgc once Corbett was no longer around to police the issue?
