Dock time is better than work time. Seems like every weekend no days off suck especially when its nice out. Can't wait till September 18th mandatory 2 weeks away no phone no email. Just my fly rod and what dreams are made of.

Any confirmed fish sightings of some entering the river this weekend with the higher flow? My guess is 1 Atlantic, 1 Steelhead, 1 King Salmon and 2 Chubs ;)
DSR hasn't updated its report page yet.
Wonder if anyone has seen any dead ones yet, along the rivers shore line?

Didn't see much happening last season till later than usual- hope this year is more normal with what seems better flows.
That said we need fish- no thiamine affect- but frankly cant see how it would have affected only one years class of fish.
Perhaps am just an old phart full of worries.

Talked to my son-in-law today about his family's charter on the western end of lake O.They caught several Kings and three Steel on Friday.Capt. said it was very good until about a week ago then the weather somehow slowed it up a bit,but he said there seems to be plenty of Salmon out there.

Seen the trophy drift boat out today as well in the river.

Report 7-31-8-2
Man it was a strange and expensive trip this week.
Got stuck in a traffic jam on way out Friday . What should have been a 3 hr trip turned into like 6 plus.
Crashed early fri night and the cabin turned into a sauna with the hatch mostly closed and only the screen door open . Sometime during the night someone decided to open the door to let more air in , well the Mosquitos had a feast . Strike 1
Woke up at 5:30, well every 1/2 hr all night anyway and headed to the lake . 3 foot rollers greeted us and we headed the 9 mile trek over to the plant. Got a dipsy rod set, a rigger set and went to drop the ball on the other rigger and cable broke sending 10 lbs of lead, a release, spin doctor & fly right to the bottom of the lake.F'!!!!! We rode the waves with 4 rods out as long as we could until about 10 am when they turned into 6 footers and coming over the back of the boat . DB, I'm sure you would have had a good chum slick going for us , lol . Strike -2
Long day at the dock, dans chicken shack and swimming in the little salmon river at the point.
Sunday got up early again and headed out the 9 miles on a 2' chop to join the crowd. Set out 1-rigger (2 rods) & 3 dipsies ,Trolled a bunch and seeing / hearing very little . My crew took a nap as I just drove and drove until the rigger rod went off and had a fish on. It got all tangled up in the dipsy line and the line / fish broke off. Well there went another $25.00 worth of gear. Re rigged , put another dipsy / spin doctor/ fly on , put it in the water and somehow it instantly untied itself , another $40.00 sent to the lake .
Ah well, we trolled all the way from Oswego up to the dunes at sandy pond without a sniff .
Strike -3 and I was OUT !!!
No sense in crying over spilled milk and we will be back at it again in 4 more days !!
Things just gotta get better right ????

Ps:
Happy birthday boys and many many more :)

Pss, feel free to derail this thread as much as one wishes ( i will put it back on the tracks ) as long as its not for self promotion ;(

It was hot as heck on the coast. the battery operated fan in the tent  was a lifesaver. Worked really hard .and I mean 12 miles of walking on the beach , for 10 stripes. I'm now 5 short of a hundred for the year.   Wet wading was nice , though. I'll skip the pics and a thread this time. I'm hoping you get some action to make up for the glitches, HT!  I've been offshore a bunch in  nasty sledding and know my food stays where it belongs. Hope I get a ride on the Mae someday, but hopefully not breakin' sh!!t and losing fish.... I 'd be rippin' if that happened to me, you are one calm fellow.

Report 8/8-9:
Boy these kind of reports are getting old.. Ain't no darn fish in that lake !!
Friday we head up on an early schedule with no traffic jams and great weather.. We get to Williamstown area at about 6:30pm and run into a huge line of cars parked on the side of the road.. It looked like a town fair happening so of course we had to turn around to see just how the locals party down at the country fair..
Turned out to be a great move as there was an AWESOME 6 piece band with some great players, the girl on the electric fiddle was just off the hook.. We danced our azz off until after the stroke of midnight and arrived to the Mae around 1:30am..

Believe it or not we were awake by 6am and headed out to the Great Lake adventure about 7am.. The lake was pushing some good 2 foot rollers and we did the usual 9 mile trek over to the stack.. Troll, troll and ride the waves we did for hrs without as much as a sniff.. Well sometimes I don't even know why we bother to put the lines out at all.. Everyone took turns taking a nap and the lake started to roil up pretty good by mid day.. I think we put 26 miles on sat and felt like we were heading to Canada.. We tried all depths of water from 120 fow -450 fow and nadda ... Aint no fish in that Lake..\
By about 3pm our stomach was ready for some grub and we put the boat to dock and walked over to our favorite shack, Dans Chicken Shack is kick azz, GREAT people and AWESOME food !!! They really know how to make some delicious chicken:

With a full belly it was time for an afternoon nap as we decided to hit the Country Fair again..
Headed back to Billytown around 9pm and once again closed that joint well after the midnight hour..
Another few hrs of shut eye and the texts went out at 6:30 am that the boat would be leaving the dock..
Our good time passenger arrived on queue and out to a flat sea we went.. Had an idea to run a Lake Trout program dredging bottom with a higher trout and salmon spread just incase..
Troll troll and darn troll we did until it was time to shut that down and have some real fun in the lake :)
When all else fails, swimming is always our best friend .. The Lake and weather was just perfect for a few hrs of relaxing in the cool (ish) , clear (ish) Great Lake Ontario..
Re energized we set the rods back up ant continued on that laker hunt, nadda..
Deciding it wasn't going to happen around 3pm we started pulling gear, low and behold there was something going on with the dipsy rod that was out 250.. As the dipsy diver comes into view we could see a fish on the line.. not a sliver flash but a strange BIG brown body .. Humm... A Darn Sheepshead !!!!
Go figure, it slammed a spoon at about 80 feet down over 120 fow...  I guess it was a fish caught in a lake that aint got no fish so it lifted our sprits a little..

So that's  a Wrap on another Great Lake adventure. Time is ticking (as I read a salmon was spotted in the river ) but we will be back at the game in just 4 more short days :)

Ps, edit :
I don't know what else we can do to put more fish on our rods.. It's not for a lack of effort by any means.. Very well could be lack of experience but something is just not clicking for us..
Almost ready to just throw down some more $$$ and hire a charter to get some experience on what is working and what we are doing wrong..  I feel like in a week or 2, the fishing should come much easier as they will be more concentrated towards the river.. While that will be a "feel good " to start catching fish (we hope), I'd really like to have a knowledge for the summer fishing better as we know, the Daisy is out there every week all summer, not just towards the end of Aug when even Ray Charles can catch a fish, lol..
We totally LOVE the area and are VERY supportive to the surroundings, be it chicken Shacks, road side farm stands, tackle shops, the mountains of ice cream we devour, Marinas we live or stay at, the tanks of gas we burn , the beaches and state parks we visit , go carts we get thrown off of (lol) and fabulous local functions .. Honestly we are pretty close to double digit g-note to the Oswego county this summer and all we do is Smile , Smile , Smile :)
Some day the Great Lake will give up the goods back to us :)

Jack, there is an entire fleet of charter boats at our marina . They head out at 5:30am every weekend we are there.. Some times they do well, mostly lakers but recently some nice salmon. Sometimes they also struggle..
We try and stay in their back pocket out on the lake as much as possible but our results are as you see , pretty dismal. I talk to a lot of folks at the dock and they all say to try here, do this and you'll get tired of catching at least lakers,, Ah well all we can do is try..
The common theme though amongst everyone is that the lake fishing has been very tough for salmon the last 3 seasons (including this) so I don't feel totally alone..

Tuna FYI: reports for this past weekend have SUCKED!!! Lakers were a target... Some Local captains are looking to change things up for kings... I think I remember mentioning lock jaw on Sunday early... Looks like its panning out that way

Re: The Great Lake Adventures 2015 Report page 2015/08/11 21:00:39 (permalink)
Yes you did mention lockjaw . The thing that I pay attention to is my sonar. Sat we seen a far better showing of fish on the screen over west way. Even in 400 fow we were marking fish as deep as 175' down.
Sunday when we passed by and around the SR , there were not many marks at all . The few things I did see were bait pods & a few bottom hugging lakers. It's been that way for a while.
Once the kings start to stage or position out from the SR the screen will be loaded as it was last year.
The term stacked like cordwood , it will refer to the salmon stacked on the bottom from 80-60 fow just waiting to come into the river . It will be very obvious on the sonar and at those times lockjaw can be a problem as well.
Can't wait to get back up on Friday . Hopefully this will be a turning point and my grandson will be into some fish

Re: The Great Lake Adventures 2015 Report page 2015/08/16 08:46:48 (permalink)
Rich- I fear ( and hope to be wrong) that the 'issues' of 2014 didn't just affect one years class of fish.
Unfortunately all reports indicate the ice over this past winter was even worse than last so the problem, IMHO, will certainly persist as it was or perhaps even be compounded by 2 such winters.
Knowing that it likely affected more than just Kings is awful.
As someone who is happy with one a day my year- like last- will still be enjoyable in that regard but not seeing healthy numbers will likely be another disappointment.
Again- HOPE to be wrong.
If East end lake reports are any indicator, they should be pretty good by now but reading between the lines on many pro reports its not all that encouraging no matter how much they try for obvious reasons. Again this season other species besides Kings seem to have become  the general mainstay of the Lake folks.
Have always maintained the fishery has been sold as a place to come and get many big fish as opposed to  place to come and get ONE fish of a lifetime. Those photos of many fish lined up on a hanging board have become the general expectation for far too long. Folks coming up expect the 'big board'.
Rich has the right view appreciating one nice fish a trip.
Oh there will be a run or a few pushes and they WIll be billed as a big deal but--------Hot and consistent - ----we will see.
That's they way they were 'sold' last year but as an upriver fisherman they didn't show well-yea some in the right spots at the right time hitting a pod or two will print up great stories just as last season- but overall ?????
Geeeezh I hope I'm just getting old and worrysome.

I'll remain positive and do believe this year will be better than people anticipate.  One good day on the river will bring smiles until deer season begins.
