Westwood gerry ;)

Size 18 midges vs. Size 10 glo bugs??? That's apples vs. Oranges to me... But I guess its a Westwood thing :)

Re: weekend 2015/07/26 14:16:52 (permalink)
My gears are spinning so another question: since the term "ethical pattern" was brought up for size 10 and 12 glo bugs, are size 10,12,or 14 naturals considered unethical??? I have opened up steelhead bellies from the river to see many small nymphs and pupas that would easily fit on hooks as small as 14 and 16... And the last I remembered a size 10 glo bug has just as much capability if flossing as any other pattern/size/color fly... Just looking for understanding here guys as I am obviously missing something here, and sorry for the double post

When on the Erie tribs I sometimes use #16 nympths/#14 glo bugs when there are low and clear conditions.I have used #14 on the SR and my go to hook for Glo Bugs is a #12 Mustad Egg Hook.I find early in the season my flash back nympth,PT,and the Prince does well on size#10.
As I always say it's the jntent of the angler not the type of fly that determines ethical fishing,if you're a lifter/liner you could use almost any fly.Ask Chartist,he'll tell you!

Re: weekend 2015/07/26 16:53:04 (permalink)
I recall almost every steelhead trip I made back in the early 90's the guide used a #12, 14 or 16 caddis pupa pattern. I don't ever recall use of an egg or glow bug pattern.
Not to change the subject but I've seen first hand how deadly a bead is under a float.  I would imagine a nymph or pupa pattern would be quite effective under a thingamabob.
A million ways to skin the cat but I think a large part of success comes down to having confidence in what you have tied to your tippet.

Any pattern that is used to actually match something fish are feeding on is ethical . That's my opinion, anyway. Glo bugs fit ,so do nymph and pupae patterns. Fishing midges in the winter with a ton of weight and small tippet in order  to line podded up fish isn't, at least to me. I didn't intend to drag this thread about Oneida into a one up contest . Drake's back on SC if you want to do that again.

Wow total derail! Although derails are common round here some are more severe than others... It all comes down to misunderstanding I guest??? I am in question of why dredging size 18 midges in the SR was even brought up??? Once it was questioned light heartedly by myself it was all down hill from there. I'm still left misunderstanding the reason why we are where we are??? Maybe I should've kept my mouth shut??? Who knows??? Now drake is being brought in to the subject matter???I'm at a loss of words...but trust me, no hard feelings... I'm still smiling :) and I still respect and enjoy any one and everyone that commonly posts here.

Clint, SR is flowing at 185 and if I didn't have to do my front brakes today amongst other common chores I would've gotten out to hit my favored small mouth level... Would be glad to hit the water with you one day this week :)

Tuna you said out of the fishes mouth not his back or side belly and I'm sure it didn't have a chunk of estez on it that was purchased for 3.50 at one of the shops

3.50 for an estaz fly??? Wow a hole lot of suckers out there. In defense of estsz I've caught 100's of fish on them since the early 90's... It seemed to stop working as well as it got popular but steelhead returns also dropped drastically in the late 90's... Even the lakers would hit estaz often when they were in the river... Blue with a read or pink z-lon, hi-vis, crystal flash or even glo bug yarn pulled over its back was hot for steelhead. White estaz with an orange thread wrapped underlying body was killer... Always took browns ...

Well another show in the books , Ann & Nancy Wilson , aka Heart . Kicking it full throttle and going to catch Lukas Nelson again in Lake Placid tomorrow night. Hope to fish the awesome able before I head back weds . Seems like I'm almost 20 again but my boys will be 30 in Jan.
Totally derailing your thread Clint , sorry man. Catch some fish and put it back on the tracks.
As for hooks ??
I may take some 1/0 from you Andy , somehow that one broke off in the net on removal, yea solid in the mouth !!
I will use what ever size the fishing dictates , hence word " fishing "
Have fun out there boys !!!!!

Re: weekend 2015/07/28 07:10:01 (permalink)
Went to Ithaca for the weekend, watched the baby rainbows tearing up the drop pool at Enfield Falls, bodes well for future runs out of Cayuga. Saw college roommates that I had not seen in near 40 years, talk about feeling young again!

Legitimate flies are those being used as imitations of some food stuffs, as opposed to being legal camoflage for a snagging hook.  So a 16 caddis in one set of hands is a legitimate fly and in another is no different than a cricket.   If a fisher has a flybox containing nothing but 1/0 fuzzies, I would say "snagger"; no fly works 100% of the time, not even wader boy's, I mean 2 bob's, "stuff on shank" series.  Like wise you could be carrying the entire fly selection at the local store and if you put on a cannonball and start yanking, appropriate conclusions may be drawn.  It's not so much the fly selected as the method with which it is fished.

Psst, please keep this quiet so it does not get out, but those glo bug thingies work really good in a left field color that is sort of a cross between yellow and green, chartroose I think it is called, but you don't want this one out on, lets say, Salmon Crazies.  Since there's only about 6 of us here, I'm not too worried, but....

And Fichy, I think the inability to see the tongue in cheek is a mark of a good person, valuing what the other says and giving it credence without judgement, and it is almost the shame for the perpetrator of the guise, but to paraphrase Chesterton, nearly everyone laughs when a man slips on a banana peel.  I can tell that sharing water with you would be that, sharing, and I'm hoping to get the chance after my last day in the workforce (until Christmas shopping time, when I will probably be helping fat ladies try to fit into skinny dresses)  9/25!

Tuna I've got plenty to share and I've been meaning to tie some bass bugs and salmon(yes salmon) flies on them for big inticers...

Maybe my reaction to rainbows only being flossed on the salmon river rather than actually taking was irrational??? Who knows who cares... True context and meaning is often lost in written word. Lucky, fichy is good company whether sharing water or just time with. A genuine guy I can assure you ;)

Only? I was very specific about mid-winter flossing, not a glittering generalization, so don't accuse me of being ridiculous, then call me a good guy.  Oh shiz, I missed the sarcasm again!  Same back at you, Dime. Now back to twiddling my thumbs waiting for a floor finish to dry .

Took the boy fishing last evening... He forced me to fish past dark... He ended up grabbing a pound and a half small mouth so he was happy... Small mouth are few and far between. They must've hightailed along with the high water we had through June and early July...

Hudson is VERY slow for bigger fish now. I caught quite a few on poppers Sunday evening, but Alex's fish equaled any I landed. Still fun. In an hour or so I leave for the coast. Big moon tides, SW at 5-10, absolutely perfect conditions, except for the heat. Gonna throw large flies at night and low light 1/0-5/0,  the largest being Deceivers that are a foot long. . I'm due for a skunk.... Oneida, Ontario, the Ocean they all start with an O and all are big water- good luck on all of them or any others you can get on. HT- I hope the Ausable isn't bath warm and swamped with tubes (I bet you know how to get away from them, anyway) - I'm not much of a listener, so I hadn't heard Lukas until recently- Dude's excellent. Reminds me of John Fogarty  with some beach  mojo and  cool edginess thrown  in. Have a good time.

Have fun on the coast fichy. Yeah I'm pretty sure the Lunkers went with the 6500 cfs on top of 1000-3000 average for over a month... Bummer!!! Some friends of mine fished a few miles of bank a week ago and caught nothing over 2 pounds

Fished Oswego for a few hours tonight. Only landed a bunch of Gobi. They do work well for bait. I had a few bass crush some smaller ones under a bobber, but could not set the hook. Next time out I am going to take my float rod.

Fly snob that I am, I've got a pretty long life list of species that I've got on a fly. Goby ain't on it, so I might have to target them. From what I've read of them, they are some good bait. Have you gone to CP, Clint? Or is your float rod just a long spinner?  If you did go to CP, you gotta let me try it.

It's a spinner Charlie I have not made that move yet, but at some point I can possibly see it happening.

And not the bass type. Went to the lake and did not know there was huge tournament. 100k boats zooming around everywhere. We only managed a few sunfish one small walleye a Pickerel and some tiny perch. Got a bunch of gobis too. Trying again Monday if the wind stays down................

Started at Godfrey, like Friday I go with a couple of older fellas so 1000 is as early as I can get out. Like RJ says its about the company not the fishing. Went o shakleton  and around. Got real windy and was a real tough go coming back we drifted slot of it with poor mans downriggers. Ended up with 4 nice perch and a sunny. No eyes though.

So tomorrow is the pickerel\walleye tourney put on by Brewerton bait. I only joined the pickerel part so I am guaranteed to catch walleye. Fishing is from 6 till noon................

Well there were whitecaps and swells taller then the boat a few times, but we braved it. We each caught a small pickerel and a few perch and a whit perch.  I caught a 15 inch eye that was returned for another day. It was not my day though, I lost 2 very nice pickerel and a very nice eye,  they were close enough to see. We entered no fin in the tourney. We checked before we left and the best eye was 20 inches at 2.5# and there were no limits (4) of pickerel.  A handful of 3 .  First place was a bit over 4.5# for 3 fish when we left.  Normally 3 to 4 pickerel a guy is not a problem, but today was a bad day.......
