Hear that Trevor .
Also an FYI :
General angling regulations are now in effect ( outside of zones) April 15 - Aug -15 which meany you CAN use spinners, spoons or lures that have treble hooks.
With the water high(er) ( dropping as I type ) NOW is the time those will shine.

As well come May - 1 NO weight of any form may be used in the zones and LFZ closes on the 15 th

Read one report that one of the hotels is sold out this upcoming weekend-perhaps its good that stocks are like the old days cause that cant continue, even in decent Steel times.
Last few years some of my 'secret' spots in May are packed when I get there-fish cant stand that for too long even with  the put and take- some natural spawns gotta happen.
Heck in May there used to be nobody around- heck even in April some places had little to no pressure back 'in the day' and a couple of fish a day back then were just fine.
With this pressure those numbers wouldn't stand a chance.
Guess I'm getting old and crabby-----

Hatchery has good numbers in it now. I hope they take eggs from these healthy fish that recently showed up rather than the quarantined fish they've been holding in their ponds. Trev you're 100% right. The best thing to do is find out yourself. With lack of internet hype and spotty conditions this fishery should start stabilizing itself. Most fish being caught are rather large. Have fun when you go Trevor!

I walked a mile of a first class trib tonight after work, saw three dark bucks waiting for hens or moving up through deep water, and one beautiful bright hen that looked at least 15 lbs, had one pull and was late on the set with a black intruder in the water she ran into.  Saw one other fisher in the entire stretch.  There are fish around, and solitude if you get away from the Hollywood spots!

But if I lived where HT is, I would think of nothing but linesides at this point, that opened yesterday, didn't it?

I've  caught  a very large number of stripers on a fly rod from Va. to Maine, and even some inland ones in Tenn., but not a one on the long rod from the Hudson. Gotta cure that. I don't mind fishing herring with HT, though. Soon. Talk to you soon, HT. I want to get your opinion on  a new rod, rather than use my Penn surf stick.  My drive to drive to the river has gone down quite a few notches, probably it for me til the fall. Hope you get one on the swing, Lucky. If I knew those rivers like you, I'd be out there after steel. Instead I know my waters and  settle for hard pulling carp and  pike for now. Not glamorous, but they're fun.  Stripes will soon erase all thought of steel.

Sorry to get off topic but we took that refab boat out for a shakedown yesterday afternoon. Smallies were active and we caught a pig pushing 4 + lbs.
Lots of other boats were out and catching herring. We didn't really target them because I forgot to renew the stupid free marine license, I will today.
So in short , where there is herring , there are linesiders . We will be prepping the Daisy May tomorrow and hopefully splash her down on Sunday for the start of the 2015 striper season .
Yes L-13, db & Clint, if I lived near you guys, I'd be thinking about nothing but lake run trout myself

That's the big difference between folks like us and the 'new generation'.
We are out there DOING and their idea of participation sports is sitting home with a beer and watching someone else do it  on TV.
Good luck to all who are gonna be out DOING.

Just got back from the land of Oz (Oswego).  A tough day, had to grind all day but managed to put some steel & a brown in the boat.  Beads, sacks and back trolling plugs with beads being the best of the three.  A lot of water made the drifts tough.  The fish turned on for a brief period later in the day as we managed six out of one small stretch of water.  I lost three nice steelhead, one at the net, another a long distance release and probably my best fish to a submerged trunk of a tree.  That fish was a dark male that broke water a couple of times before breaking off.  I hope to have a couple of pictures to post, nothing big but........

Sounds like a good day, Gerry. Tough on the steel, they are brutes sometime. People that say they land the majority they hook, lie through their teeth. Glad you went.

The day before (Saturday) was a banner day with great conditions except for the high water.  The fellows that fished that day did very well with both browns and steel including a monster male steel that was a shade under nineteen pounds.  I saw the pictures, truly a fish of a lifetime.

Attachments are not available: Download requirements not met Dime- The wind, water and heavy current were challenging but the fish are there you just have to grind them out.  The east side of the river along the locks gave us a respite from the wind, the open areas were a different story.  When we started the Oswego was running near 20,000 CFS and dropped by perhaps a thousand or two during the day.  You really had to grind the softer seams constantly adjusting the depth of your offering to entice a bite.  A lot of skippers in the mix so fish are still spawning or else the little guys would be long gone.
The photo is the monster that was caught and released on Saturday.

Nice fish for yourself gerry, thanks for sharing. And that monster is a fish of a lifetime!!! I honestly would lean more towards fishing oz by boat if I had the time and boat. There are great fish to be had there

I used to fish Oswego often with my Jon boat. Launched under bridge by lock, not sure if still can.
That is aTRICKY river and I lost a few anchors in there.

Nice fish indeed and those pics you sent me looked like beautiful healthy ones too .
Congrats !!

Hot tuna-  the Oz was no place for a jon boat at that cfs.  The rapids between the Utica Avenue Bridge, Railroad Tressel and the 104 Bridge were rolling 4-6 swells.  The trip up to the face of the dam was an adventure.  The water from the launch in back of the motels was dicey and rolling at a pretty good clip.  The only way we had a chance to get up river was to launch from the kiddie pool at the end of the low wall on the west side in back of the Ritz Diner (now called Jocko's).  The center wall was completely under water.  The 30lb anchor had trouble holding bottom in a number of spots.
That river is not for the faint of heart at those levels.

Re: What Steelhead ??? 2015/04/25 08:44:01 (permalink)
Got up to SR country Wed evening to mid 40s temps and very light fishing pressure in very high water on the main river.
Other waters were a bit up but not as bad as the dam controlled SR.
Thurs AM had about an inch of new snow and temps at bout 31.
Fished away from the river and found a surprising number of fish in what I believed to be a pre spawn condition with some still moving in.
They were VERY spooky and out on beds but not quite into full spawn mode. Fishing to them was a challenge in clear moderately low waters and only got a few quick half hearted hits.
It was worth the trip though and I was VERY satisfied.
Friday at 6 AM the yard was clear and green-- by 8 another inch had fallen was bout 31 again _Bugged out.
Very nice trip - even made a pre sales agreement with a neighbor.

Very nice trev. Glad you got out. I hope to get out a little today or tomorrow, but having worked today and good weather for outdoor work, might not happen... Weekday evenings are now an option though. Congrars on the pre sale agreement, although it would be nice to keep you as a fellow Towny :(

Will be a 'townie' ,  in all likelihood, till around the first of the year Andy.
We will be doing the actual final agreement then-but the deal is pretty much done and will be written up.
Nice actually -kinda like it up there and it will be a slower transition to 'short terms' status.

HEY- was looking at my report from last week and apologize if I gave the impression the Steel were pre  spawn.
There were plenty of old  used beds around  but the Steel I saw and spoke of were quite likely late arrivals from the recent high water- also likely the last late arrivals.
The 'main thingie' is probably past but some lates always happen--imho.

I was way up a trib tonight and there were redds, but not like I used to see in this stretch.  A lot of fish spawned low in this trib, the stretch down low I checked last week had three times the redds I would normally see.  I haven't seen a fish in the last three times out, but I agree, there are always a few that come late.  Lots of walking to find one sometimes, though!

From what I'm reading on lake reports , the browns on the east shore ( Mexico - Selkirk ) have been pretty dead since ice out.
Most guys are now turning to what they used to call trash fish, lakers, to put fish on the boat.
I will take a laker any day , all day.

Going to give the mighty Hudson one last gas this weekend with grandkids then pull the boat.
Probably fish some ADK lakes for a tune up in June with the riggers then point it to the Great Lake mid June for some deep water trolling

If you give Placid a try in June, be sure to have a flyrod rigged with a big hex nymph or dry, as the rainbows do some serious surface feeding when the drakes come off.

Brown action was OK from shore about a month ago in the central south shore, but they are moving into deeper water except at O dark 30.  Reports are that they are mostly eating gobies.
