Electric Augers

Anyone have any reviews on any? I am about to pull the trigger on the Strikemaster I believe... unless I can get talked out of it.. Tired of hurting my shoulder..

A buddy of mine just got a Ion electric auger. Will try it this weekend hopefully. The website says it will drill 40 holes at 24" thick on one charge. We'll see.

Go for it. I love my ION. Had it 3 seasons now. You wont find many if any reviews on the new strikemaster yet as it's only been out a couple months. I hope they're as good as my electric. I'll never go back to a gas auger.

If my buddies works like they say it does that's the route I'm going. He picked it up for $ 469 with free shipping.

The ION worked great!  Only drilled 8 holes through about 14" of ice - no problem with that. The reverse feature is nice - reducing the scooping to almost nothing!

Had my buddies ION out again this weekend. Drilled over 20 holes on 11" thick ice. No problem, battery still read a full charge also.  Nice set up!

Ion auger is awesome! Personal record was 32 holes through 12 inches ice on a single charge over 2 days fishing.

I'm a do it yourself kind of guy and here's what I came up with for when the ice is over 12". I took the handle off my hand auger. Slid a 7/8" deep socket over the shaft. Drilled and pinned it. Now I just use my cordless drill,(I recommend a name brand). Last year when my batteries were newer I could get 10-15 holes per battery. Now I get 3-4. Looks like it may be time to buy a couple new batteries. Either way it's cheaper than buying a power auger.

I used a 3/8 cordless 18v makita hammer drill, but I don't use the hammer drill setting. I just run it on drill. I know they sell a conversion kit, that's what gave me the idea.

To the guys that use the drills, if you're only getting 10 holes from your units, doesn't that limit your ability to really search for the fish? Seems like they'd be okay if you fish the same place every time out as you could open your old holes but what about new areas or if the fish have moved from your everyday spots? I understand that a lot of the power augers are pricey but my ION is the best investment i've made for icefishing since i started using flashers and now sonar. Gonna TRY to keep my auger going strong for the next 10 years or if they develop an easier, lighter, more efficient way to cut holes. 10 holes would limit my ability to find the better fish. If you see someone out there with a green machine, stop and check it out. They're awesome to use.

If I can't find the perch in the bay by the time I drill 20-30 holes, I'm not gonna find them. I do still bring the auger handle in case I need it, but I'm usually on the fish by the third or fourth hole at the most.

I should also mention that you should take the time to make sure all the wiggle and any additional movement is gone from the socket and ratchet bit before you drill. You'l know real quick if you did a sloppy job. Carry duct tape just in case and drill straight down. If you've ever used a hand auger, You know what to look for to ensure the more cut for your effort.

Dakota would you recommend  some spot welding rather than drilling and pinning.  I see you have yours set up to replace the original handle if needed but, I'm looking at a little different power unit that will use a 12 volt battery such as a small motorcycle battery.

That ought to drill some holes 10-4?

If you can do a spot weld it will be stronger for sure. I just used a 1/4" stainless bolt and have had no issues. Just make sure it's all lined up before you tack it.

I hear the "make sure it's all lined up I do", although would be funny as heck watchin' somebody 'dancing out across the ice' with', a wobbly old ice auger.   Umm.... as long as it wasn't me (lol)

Just made a battery pack using a ammo can, power outlet (cigarette lighter) and a 12 volt battery used with "wild game feeders".  Incorporated an inline fuse holder, attached a shoulder strap, installed the plug on my devices (fish finder, spot light, etc.) and now I need to find a cheap electric, 12 volt impact wrench.  If I can't find a 12 volt, I'll buy 3 six volt batteries, hook em up in series and git an 18 volt wrench or drill.

Till then, I'll just have to keep taking the better half fishing.  Besides, she makes some great baloney and cheese sanmidges!

    Appreciate the info Dakota

Impact wrench? That'll be noisy. The steady torque from a drill type motor will be more efficient I think.
