Get a kick out of some of the talking heads on TV-
they cant just give up and report the truth
- still trying to make it into the huge storm they talked about for a few days leading up to what little we actually got.
Makes ya wonder about other accurate news reports of actual events.

Imagine the reaction if the weather people had come on and said, we've got some uncertainty in the model for NYC and parts of PA so we'll treat this as not happening, just go about your business, and then the storm hit as predicted.  Monday morning quarterbacks always throw winning passes.  It ain't that far from any of the places that didn't get what the models said they could have, but of course it is probably preferable to be sorry than safe.  I would wager the Massachuisetts shore will have to be significantly relearned for any one chasing linesiders next season.

Re:Weather thread 2015/01/28 11:11:14 (permalink)
Nobody said treat it like it isnt happening, but a common sense advisory of the various possibilities would be prudent
Generally with North moving storms there are 3 versions- out to sea-up the coast line and moving inland.
All three are commonly shown during Hurricane season with the most likely being featured and the others also indicated.
Unfortunately those areas like the Cape that stick out from the shore are involved in two out of the three.
It has been reported that in this case too many chose to only speak of the worst case indicators and let the others go unreported.
We SHOULD know about the worst case and prepare however we should also be told when it IS NOT a certainty and that other scenarios are indicated as well.

One report is still saying that I got two feet. Guess last years Buck was a 500 pounder using that math.
The local Mayor was quoted saying ' this was nothing unusual'.

Recall the talking head on TV few years ago with a big hyped storm- there he was all in his hooded parka holding his hand on the hood to keep it on alongside the beach talking about how bad it IS-- a couple holding hands was seen in the background walking the beach- Wifey and  I were hysterical- even the regular commentator snickered and mentioned the hand holders.

You can thank the weather channel for all the hype on anything weather related .
Prior to the above channel , our local weather forecasters
Would just give us the weather and their predictions without drama. Then along came cable and with it the weather channel which is ALL drama. I get a kick outta seeing their reporters leaning sideways in a so called wind storm which may be 30 mph or less .
So this drama they create brings ratings , it draws people in because the general public feeds on drama.
The bad thing is that it has pretty much forced the local stations to create their own drama to keep viewers

Did yinz see the red faced Mayor of NYC during his interview this morning.

Will be interesting to see what he does for the next 'major' forecast as, it will be for the general public.

Keep "crying wolf" weather dudes then put your tails between your legs and blame 'the people' for not listening should a major disaster ocurr.

Who was it that said; Buffalo and vicinity has been been getting hammered all winter. Where is the 'hype'?

Just callin it like I see it; now if you will excuse me, I gotta go plow the 2" (6" forecast 72 hrs before the actual storm) of snow I got.

PS. Don't yinz just love the names given by the Weather Channel, to each and every storm?

Give a man a fish and you will feed him for a day; teach a man to fish and you will feed him for a life time. ~Anne Isabella Thackeray Ritchie (1837–1919)~

BufFallo really only got that bomber a few months back... As for the state of the emergency close all highways and arrest you if you're out driving I think is ridiculous. It is complete total infringement upon american rights. Obviously a line in the sand has been drawn. It will just keep pushing further and further at this point. The day the government tells me I can't drive to work due to a snow storm is the day I start thinking about packing up and moving further out!

For the weather it was -8 this morning. Been good sunshine though. Had a lot of snow come off the roof yesterday. Thought of calling Albany to see if I could declare a state of emergency on my front walkway allowing anyone to be arrested that dared to walk on it :)

It looked like some pretty heavy damage around Nantucket, and some other areas that did not look like they were built to have water up into the clapboards.  The sea wall that was thrown up was not lightweight stuff.  And it looked like  a heavy digout around Boston, if they had traffic to contend with they would never have been able to get it as fast as they did and would have had all the stuck cars to deal with as well.

Yes the seawall wasn't light weight stuff... Worcester got near 40"... But what I learned in the past having grown up where I did, there was always enough fair warning for people to know and use your best judgement... And state if emergencies were never lined with mandatory arrests and up to 6 months in jail if caught driving. And everything seemed to always be just fine. I grew up driving 4 wheel drives so snow never stopped me. The biggest storm I endured was 27 inches down in the tristate. I will say though that since the late 90's things have changed. My hometown is not the town it used to be. Much more ritzy and glamorous... And the local jurisdictions coupled with state and federal government are succeeding in turning most of the folks in to sheep :)

Just plowed up about 4 inches from the drive, better now then in the am. At least the temps were moderate in the 20's , but with the wind it is brutal out there.

Yup SE wind has got everyone stirred up. It actually hit 31 a few hours ago but that SE wind and synoptic snow has everyone messed up. Even the animals! Look out though as the coldest morning of the year is near and the surrounding days of it are no where's near warm

Not looking like a particularly pleasant night anywhere along the North Coast tonight.  May have to rethink the hardwater plans, with no shanty this is a good weekend to get frostbite!

L`13, sunday looks promising with light winds.. Taking the grandkids then on the perch grounds..
Tomorrow is a NO tip-up day braving the North West winds in the Shanty, short pole, heater and electronics in search of "the 1" that 30+" Laker from the deep :)

Hope you all make it out somewhere this weekend

Well another synoptic storm. We've had quite a few recently but nothing real big. Just plowed out a good 8 inches. This one should drop a foot. As usual lake effect bands will usually follow up a day or two after a synoptic storm passes through. They have been light though to say the least. Let's see what happens after this one comes through.

Close to a foot with 2 foot drifts. All cleaned up.  what got me is the ferocity of the temp drop. Seemed like it was 15 when I started home  at 1430 and by the time I hit Pulaski (for a funeral, I lost my uncle at 57 years old) it was 1 below.

-17 and 18" of .... something that starts with  "S"  and has 4 letters.
Snowshoeing is fun, but a good thaw would be handy. We sit in the shadow of the Taconics and Greens and sometimes get the effect that blocks storms, sometimes traps them. This one was a trap.

12" of ice with 12+" of snow, time to get out the Iversons.  Gotta go for gills Saturday, only day in the 30's (barely) for a while if the weatherman is right.

My bottom was -12 at sunrise... But apparently it bottomed out at -19 in Altmar in the wee hours. It is winter wonderland here. No 18" from this storm... But the snow banks are well over my mailbox ... A small thaw out would be nice fichy...
