2015 Happy New Ice Year

Walked on 10" solid today, awesome to be alive.
Stopped at a very large body water on way back and walked on 3" :) much happy about that because before the adventure ends Sunday , I should be into lakers.
This will be the ice thread for me and pics will filter in once I get back to a computer .
Peace & Tuna

Well not only did the fishing suck in the last 4 days but returned to a crashed hard drive on a pretty new computer and a patched up boiler on the furnace.
Great adventure to at least get " away" . ZERO crowds , beautiful surroundings and fantastic company on the ice.
Pic's with no hero shots and late starts to fishing will have to wait until life allows me a break.. Those are my problems..

finally got another PC, it's a bear to operate to say the least but here are some crappy fotos of the 2015 Ice season starting 1/1/15
A truly outta the way pond in the upper north.. Anyone remember frontier town ? It's close to there.

Had pike way back in the day, no more but lots of bass and perch..
Next stop was a deep water lake in search of trout, we got skunked, as usual:

3" black Ice , 80 fow , open water just off the point south.. FUN TIMES !!

We made 3 trips back to that lake with only 1 laker to show. The next week they were driving ATV's out there..
Another view from another water body, I just LOVE the solitude ..

After a few uneventful trips our local waters finally became ready, It's what life is all about :

    And the bounty showed up:

Hit that place again sat with a bunch of old Fish USA'ers and what a blast it was !!
I won't show the kill shots but will say the food, friendship and laughter was WORLD CLASS !!

So over the course of the last 5 weeks the fishing has been sub par, the time out with friends and being outdoors along with the lifetimes of memories are always priceless.
We are heading to the Great Lake of the Adirondacks (Lake George) and I sure hope to continue to share the experiences .. Walking on the Water and not worrying about who, what when or where while fishing is Love of the sport.. Hopefully I will catch one too..lol

Great job HT have yet to get out here yet. There has been ice for a week or so, but it is still sketchy. Was going to get out today, but farm stuff got in the way. May hit Oneida after my 1/2 day tomorrow, if not I am going on Wednesday up to sandy pond.

Sandy pond was a bit better, but the bite was tough, managed 7 keeper perch and 5 keeper gills in four hours.   On the better I was in the market for a new auger, even with new blades drilling with the cheap  eight inch one was killing me. I bucked up and got a Nil's six inch and man what a difference. I could drill four or five hole in the time it would take for one with my crappy cheap one. It slices through the ice.

Just keep the guard on the blades and take em to a pro sharperner once in a while (in the off season.)

My nils 6" is going on its 6 th season . Never had sharpened and still cuts like a bandit . I have cut countless holes with it and last year the ice was extremely thick. There is a guy , frank deluca ? On ice shanty who is the king of sharpening them. I may just buy a new head ( $64.00) and send the old one to him this spring for a tune up.
As L-13 said , keep the guard ( cheesy) on, they are wicked sharp as we have found out by blood and slicing a hole in a brand new shanty.
A much better guard that fits is a strike master 6" if you want to spend an extra $15.00
One issue you may run into is icing on the blade.
Things that help are to put blade back on as soon as your done drilling holes or thawing it out every now and then.
If its iced up it may seem like the blade is dull and just spin on the ice not cutting. Try and avoid pushing down hard, they are not meant to have hard down pressure , just spin it with light pressure until its de iced or thaw it out, possibly in a hole if you don't have a heater.

I know they are a large investment but if you take care of them then they will treat you well for sure.
Good luck out there as I'm going lake George laker hunting this weekend :)

    Hi everyone!
Been having a issue with getting on here and after talking to the site admin. and my computer guru it has been narrowed down to my router. For some reason I cannot log on to this forum going through the router so right now I'm hooked directly onto the internet. And get this I have no problems logging onto other forums, only fishusa forums! The router I have has no range at all so I was thinking of getting a better one and now I have this to really make it a no brainer.
Have fun on the ice guys I hope you get the big ones....and stay safe out there!

It's great to hear your outta hibernation.. Computers are the curse of many but such tools they can be..ugh..
Almost time for you to make the leap to the big fish on the short pole.. We are going to dial them in for ya and all in the next 3-4 weeks.. Now or never ole' buddy, and never say never..lol
Maybe , hopefully some pic's next week will do the trick.. Did I remind you there is heat , unlike standing on the banks of a frosty river..
As of which, I just typed about never but it's tough to drag me butt up there stream/river.. Hopefully it opens another spot for fellow fishers and they share their adventures..
Sure do appreciate the weather and local conditions because I will say , ya never know when I may wipe some dust off..

Ok Db, get those boots out.. but by the looks of things this week, maybe a shovel too.. ugh..
So yesterdays adventure was absolutely AWESOME !!! We didn't set the world on fire but iced 6 , lost about the same and had countless fish chase our lure trying to get them to bite.. Good thing snaggers aren't allowed on the ice..lol
We started the day in the pitch dark thinking that the place was going to be Packed.. Wrong, we were the only ones out there, well besides some ice skaters :)
Here is us trekking into the unknown under the cover of darknss .. that was NUTS !!

We came to and crossed this pressure ridge in the dark, I took this pic on the way back in:

First up was my buddy Brian ( I asked permission to share his foto)  who was the hot rod and when I would hook up , so would he. We had a few doubles:

I got on board with a couple shorts, they must be 23' to keep.. Mine all seemed 22 3/4 " lol

All of Brians seemed to be WELL over 23" with this 26+" fatty

    All fish released ..

Finally, Take a good look at the ice because after the big snow we are expecting it will not be an easy drag again out there :(

    P.S.
All my fish were caught on bucktail jigs I tied from a deer we shot this fall.. Nothing is better then using your own materials :)

Awesome man, I will not even share the pic of my one crappy fish (really it was a crappy). Bite is absolutely horrible on the pond. Oneida is calling my name for Ext weekend unless I hear the bite it on up there.

Back on line to take a look at the Lakers, very nice! That ridge looks a little hairy to be navigating in the dark, but then I'm sure you know what your doing out there.
Have n't had the time to shop for a GOOD router yet so I'll have to play this game until I do.

Waiting for the grandkids to arrive and see if we can do better with the pannies today...

At least you got out. Had alot of thing to do around the farm and went and watched a few. B ball  games. Now it's 1pm and I am spent. Weather is nice, but all reports say the perch bite is off. Actually thought about the river for a second.

even after a late start and only about 2 & 1/2 hrs fishing , today was a great day on the ice with the grandkids..
Zero wind, bright sunshine and a few smiles around..
We got 4 on tip-ups and 3 jigging.. One was a white..
Sure love this little perch puddle as we always seem to catch fatties..
So that's a wrap to another weekend.. Already dreaming of next week :)

Well I tried Oneida today and that place kicks my butt every time. I managed I bite all day, but landed a good eye. It was actually the first one I have ever got through the ice so all was not lost.

Very nice Clint . I'd like to try Oneida on ice ..
I hit a local state park lake today . Tough walking conditions. No trails except the one I blazed with snowshoes as far as I could drag my smitty sled through a foot of snow.
Fishing was fun with a mixed bag jigging a few LMB, pickerel and a bunch small gills .
Back at it in the am again.
I love Ice but not snow

Yes, walking was brutal today. Walk a hundred yards and rest, repeat. At least I had snow machine trails to follow, but it mattered little.

As we said yesterday, The drag through the snow with slush/water underneath was brutal.. Was going to try another lake this morning but just don't have it in me today..
At least it was peaceful and didn't have to worry about crowds..

Thought I was really going to get into them.. My jig is the green bar on left, the fish are below looking:

Thing was, they were all this size:

I'm mandated to working overtime for the next 3 weeks so there will be no after work jaunts .. Till next weekend :)
