Nice, guys. I like the shots of the conga line of ghost fishers.  You can't see them?  Must be me just always expecting them.
Thanks for the pics!

As for my epic failure.
Day one I missed 2 pulls.

Day 2 .
Now I'm not one much into counting numbers but when its a string of failures like I experienced it kind of sticks in your mind.
I believe I lost 16 that is right 16 steelfaces before I finally landed number 17.
Had them on for 8 or 9 jumps then they fell off the hook.
Had 3 or 4 sizzling runs then they'd fall off the hook.
Got the line wrapped on my wading staff, gave slack and got it untangle only to have it fall off the hook.
Just about all our fish came on the same fly.
The only one I landed was on a different pattern that I tried to see if the overcast and drift boat hatch had them spooked.
I only lost 2 flies to fish.
The first nicked a rock as I was landing it and the second on the take to a very poorly tied improved clinch knot.

We might not go back there unless we see a lot of cars.

It did get lonely, especially when all the biters kept flocking to the same guy on day 2, but after 32 years of it, I guess I'm used to it, and that coho first thing in the AM kept me company until my next bite around noon! Who would figure on a salmon that bright with less than  a week to go to November.

I got a PM about where, general directions kind of question, and based on what we saw, you could be basically anywhere on the river between the wire hole and 2a and have reasonably uncrowded conditions.  Even good water within sight of the bridges and parking areas was  open or had one or two guys, spots that a month ago had 10 to 20 elbowing.  If I'm a wimp for going after unharried fish rather than the educated and challenging fish in a Fly Fishing Only area, well, I'm a wimp!

Wimp no carry tall man's burden no mo'! Salam, salam, salam!  Short less than mile hike, oh groaner! Just less than mile, even with twists and turns. Save for power wheel chair, 4 wheel drive model!  Or jet boat!  Put in at compactor and run backward to Pineville!

Dime, it is plot to empty the staircases by Saturday AM so I have them all to myself.  The only way we could have been more general would be to say "in Oswego County", and really, if you've walked the river at all, there are no secret spots, just places you like to fish better.

Re: call me Murtaugh 2014/10/30 20:08:50 (permalink)
Don't tell them about the guys we saw that were herding all the fish into big nets and putting them in other parts of the river at night, and only telling a few guys where they were putting them.  Although the generalized upstream movement should be resulting in them stacking up like cord wood for any that make it up from 52.

There are fish from top to bottom right now, but you still need some savvy to realize that and then identify taking spots, and then put what they want to eat through them long enough, as there is still a pulse to it all.  As RG was saying, a lot of fish only sometimes biting, and if you are with a hot rod like I fish alongside, it maybe really sometimes!
But if you hiked to a spot the last couple of days, and there were people in it, you either kept going or went back a little and there was fine water for prospecting most of it with as many possible sweet spots as what you originally wanted to fish.  I know the water we were in that we knew fished very differently for us than it ever had before.

Re: call me Murtaugh 2014/11/05 06:42:15 (permalink)
Got sick on my trip to Toronto.
Laid on the bank a lot.
Started good with a fish on my first pass down the run.
True story
It jumped 7 times by my count in what must have been 20 seconds or less.
Last one was a greyhound at me wrapping my tip.
By the time I cleared the tip it was gone.
Second pass hooked one long enough to get Lucky's attention and gone.
I still suck.
After that it was a blank for me.
But Lucky picked away and hit 4 landing 1 through the rest of the day.
Not nearly the fish as the week before but we had the run to ourselves most of the day.

Couple old guys below us got into maybe 8 or 10 and we saw fish rolling and jumping.
Enough going on to keep the intensity level up knowing the next swing could be the one.
All in all a good day other than this ebola or whatever I picked up.

There were definitely a lot more guys on the river than last week.  Speytards and fly flingers, a fair number of stealth lifters, but some very talented fishermen as well (and some of the spey guys were also very talented I picked up some ideas for mastering the left bank with the long rod.)  No saltwater spinning rods seen all day!  2B was settling down for a nap when one guy asked if he could fish through the spot (I thought I was in another country for a second!)  and with a fine swing, he managed two in the 45 minutes or so that the chain saw was running on the bank.   One of the guys from the tailout came up while I was tying up a new tippet and talked for a few, revealing that he was 86!  I should be so lucky as to be in this man's shape when I hit 70, I if it hit 70!

I hear LOTAC will be cleaning and fishing this weekend and rooms are pretty much booked.  That and the arctic blast may keep me on central LO tribs.  And word is that the Oak got a huge run last week!

The bright side about this coming weekend, most will be in poor condition on Sunday , will have blown their wads and be heading home by noon leaving the river open in afternoon and Monday .. At least my hope anyway ..

While they have been big and healthy lately that fish was from last years 1200 or whatever it was flow.
She was a handful.
Lucky can't post his pics.
He just gave me a disk from last year and early this year.
Lots of pretty shots but I appear in most of them so they must stay in the vault.

I forgot my camera this last trip so he has the only pics of the one he landed yesterday that I took for him.

Well no pics again.
Remembered the camera but the batteries were dead.
Started high in the kingdom on a guest pass.
Fished till about 8:30 without any indication of a fish in the river.

Hit the road and went to what's been good for a couple weeks.

Two spin rod bouncers in the hole and a switchtard.
Fish on the first pass through my bucket.
After having the hook pull some much lately I made sure to drive it home several times.
What I forgot was the loop in my hand and as I hit him the 3 time he bolted and wrapped the butt.
Before I could even start to free it he broke the ten pound easily.
Second pass landed a hen about eight pounds.
Jumped five full out of the water leaps and spent the rest of the fight thrashing the surface.
One of the spin guys has landed two  by now.
Why is it that they don't seem to fight as hard or excitedly on spin gear?
Rest my old bone while the fly guy worked the water.
Nother pass nother fish.
Male pushing ten that wanted to show his muscles.
Stayed in the water making four long runs but never more than boiling the surface.
Then the it was over.
Two more passes without a taker.
Fly guy though no takers.
Spin guys no takers.
The elderly gent that was there Tues no takers on the thingybob.

Pulled the plug a little after noon and went up to Malinda's to buy a few things and tell her and Bob I would probably not see them til next year.

Murtaugh has left the building.

With steel close to home for you and snow in the forecast for the next 6 months I don't blame you... Nice report though. Question though: when you say pass I assume you're referring to a downstream work through an area with many casts? Or is a pass just a cast?

I agree with guys landing more with spinning gear, but I seem to be able to land more with a fly rod I've noticed...go figure???
