TB I think that was the issue today.  The was no one over there (or anywhere else for that matter) today so not a lot to get them moving around.

Why snag in the zones when you can go downriver and join in the butchery there, and take some out on a rope.

Pretty lively day! I always pay for fish  activity by some negative aspect, like losing a box. Better than falling in (though my camera is water proof).
Field of dreams. I'm always reminded of a string of lights in a used car lot.
I don't know if I'll put up with that scenario again this year. As we've said, you can fit in and not snag anyone, it could be worse, it's not the ballpark, but it's also not nearly as fun as some space and peace to yourself. One Sunday evening circa '84 , during a rare New Joisey blizzard, I went to hang out in small music venue friends of mine ran. The dilapidated school bus out front had Texas plates and the chalkboard said 3 bucks for SRV and Double Trouble. Who? Noone showed and the band was stuck in the rooms upstairs of the old inn. They came down and practiced for an audience of me and the bartender. Stevie even jumped up on my table and played behind his head.  I've had days when I've found big pools with no people and steel in residence.  To me it's about the same kind of feeling. Blessed, privileged,  right place right time.
I have real trouble with big steelhead. It's not that I don't know what to do, I just hate the prolonged battles and put the over pressure on almost every time. I use 3x that is around 9 lb. and change. Seems so dam thin when one is on. Glad you had a good day, despite the little stuff. We'll forgive the no pics, you've put up some good ones this season already.

Cool story Charlie and I bet you have many :)
I mean no disrespect when I say this but do you folks think the reports are drawing the crowds ?
I gotta say , there are many lurkers reading .
I do think ( hope )things will thin out in a few weeks and I wouldn't mind giving the almost sure spot a try but if its crowded beyond my liking I will most likely just fish in Jacks secret spot, its my favorite area anyway.

Decided to do my suicide trip yesterday instead of today with the rain that was forecasted. I was the best sick day I have had in a while. Got down to my spot 10 minutes before daylight no one around. Fish were around but no takers. Since I was just there for the day on the move I went.
New spot different results by the time 10:30 came I already had a stellar day 4 kings not in bad shape 3 still a little green, 1 Nice Coho and my first steel finally 6-7lbs. The best part was not a sole around till 15 minutes before I left.
I did see a few steel behind hens dropping eggs and that is how I caught mine, oregon cheese egg pattern right over the back of a king and game on. Great day almost home by dark after a 2 hour shopping trip with my father at Bass Pro.
Looking forward to the next trip but wont be for a few weeks. Son has lacrosse the next 4 weekends so no fishing for me. Best of luck to all that get out there.

I bet that tour has countless stories just like ours. Bowie hearing him and putting him on China Girl, rather that Jimmy getting him a break was not a surprise. I told him he deserved to fill the Garden and he would in not too long a time. I got to meet him later on when we were both sober, too. He was even nicer. I always hated doing covers, I enjoyed learning and playing his.

Re: call me Murtaugh 2014/10/23 14:59:49 (permalink)
What we say about our trips has little to do with crowds IMHO.
Its a famous fishery  well known in this Country and others.
Most readers would quickly pickup on the fact that we few are regulars with years of experience on the SR and that our experiences may not mirror those of the  one or two weekends per year most folks only get. Heck- we often say that.
Combined with the fact that other forums and pro reports are out there makes me think we aren't  all that relative when somebody is making plans.
I DO believe our suggestions on how to fish as well as tackle tips can help make someones trip a more likely success, that's a good thing.
This forum has become a circle of friends- some whom have never met- sharing a common addiction- kinda think that comes through loud and clear in a good way.
Those OTHER places with the 40  Kings a day reports are far more likely than we to attract a lurker- heck on a great day most of us only get a couple to BITE.

Thats for sure r3G3. great conversation on and off the water. Went this year for the first time with Charlie had a great trip and our catch of the day were a bunch of chubs and a small mouth. Looking forward to my next trip with him and meeting the rest of the crew one day here on the forum. Let the kids with the big egos brag about all the big numbers of fish they caught I think most of us here do it the right way and are sucessful doing it.
The river means more to me than 40 hook ups a day it is like they said in Happy Gilmore go to your happy place and that for me is the river. Fish or no fish.

Nice fishing guys and no worries . I understand the crowds will come one come all over for salmon, its the chrome / trout I don't want to see get picked on to much.
I don't like going to pucker bush creek or getting up at O'dark thirty to much ..
Maybe the water will come up a bit and open up more opportunities .. Itchin to try some warts

Well last year I had a guy comment on my pic that twobob posted up with my son and I holding a king in early august. You'd be surprised the amount of folks that peek around these sites... Facebook is another one... Early Steelhead fishing is almost trashed for me. I enjoyed it mostly because of the solitude it use to have in store... Yes you can still find... But nothing like it used to be. I noticed big changes from 98-2004... And the from 2009 to present it has gotten out of hand for me

Andy IMHO the Steel folks have noticeably increased along with the number of fish in the past few years- -don't think they would stick it out ( internet or not) if the numbers went back to the old days.
When I started ya could walk all along behind your place and see one or two guys between Tressel and where the turn off is for Tressel South, and about a  hundred boats.
Some of my SECRET May spots where I was generally always alone have guys posted by  them most all day in the past few years.
Just the way it is I guess when the fish numbers up.
Good with the bad   lol.

if the numbers went back to the old days.

RG,

The old days for me are the early to mid 80's and there were fish everywhere in late October, but also large numbers of anglers.  I had to get away from the river except for a couple of days a year in the 90's, and I noticed that the fishing for steelhead basically went to hell, and the biologists weren't sure why. But it got fixed, it is just that the word has been out, and there are more of us looking to catch lightning in a bottle.

I shook hands for about 5 minutes this afternoon about 10 minutes from my house, with a high teens silver rocket, over a yard of mint bright at eye level 20 feet away when she jumped, blast to the tail of the pool, blast back up, and then she's heading for the lake, I'm at least 50 feet into the backing when I hit shore to 63 year old style run after her, I clear the sweeper on the outside get under the overhanging brush below that and hit less rocky ground where the fast water at least has an eddy for the fish to rest and me to catch up, reeling like mad, and I've finally got the end of the line on the reel, three heavy head jolts as the rod comes into play again, and she twists against the force, and she' s gone.

Boy, I love October!

Started  in the 80s too- was great for a while then crashed -big time crash- think they have done a great job bringing them back.
Crowds have increased each year IMHO since they have become more abundant and more popular.
It isn't like when several species are there, its just Steel- more and more folks are tuning in.

Re: call me Murtaugh 2014/10/25 08:40:20 (permalink)
My early years were 90 on... Yes crowds were here but end of October was upriver mayhem... The lower river was mostly a blank the month of November with lots of chrome. I'd say 91 and 92 were phenomenal steelhead years in my findings. My father would insist that its not always this way but we would have great trip after great trip... I'd say 93-97 were tough steelhead years... 97/98 season was a good steelhead season for me. The crowds really started coming for steelhead Slowly from there on with it really hitting hard 2009 to present. I think I could say that number of steelhead fishers have wat more than quadrupled since I started.especially in November. We used to come up every thanksgiving. We usually fished alone on thanksgiving in many spots. Not near the case anymore. Exploited is an understatement. I just hope mother nature protects them again this year as she did last year... The two years before that were a joke with a low water warm steelhead circus all season long... Those fish got really beat up

Dime, your years seem about right.  It was still great down low when Fred and then Mike had the gate, it was getting pretty spotty when Connie was in there, and after that I think we just gave up as the price went up and the catch rate went down.  I'm just glad that whatever was broke got fixed.  And I truly feel bad for DSR if a lot of fish are now running at night and getting through there before dawn.  NOT!
