Arthur from shore

Any tips for a guy and a kid to get into a few catfish?

Thanks

Haven't done a whole bunch of it, but my son and I have caught a few catfish from shore near the upper 528 launch and near the Zion Church across the lake from the 528 launch.  Been a few years since we gave it a go, but cut bluegills in the evening worked OK for us.

From what others have told me, there's not really a bad spot for channel cats in Arthur, and if you fish at dusk and later, bullheads will hit just about anything you throw out on the bottom.

I don't fish for catfish, but several people told me they had a lot of luck catching catfish over by the dam. If you go to the McDaniel's launch area, there is a road size path to the dam area.
    Good luck.

Bait is more important than location, 'cause there are cats everywhere. Yeah, some spots are better for certain targets than others, but you'll catch cats anywhere you can plant a chair.

A Nightcrawler will get you Bullheads and smaller (12" - 18") Channel cats, Shiners will get you bigger Channel cats, and Bluegills will get you the big boys toward evening and beyond.

Any of you cat guys ever see a catfish with black spots all over it?  I've seen the smaller ones with 5-10 spots, but nothing like one my father in law caught the weekend before last.  It's entire head was covered (black in the mouth too), midsection had about 10-15 dots, then tail section had a lot of dots.  Almost like a cross between a channel cat and black crappie...  Internet search hasn't shown much.

Just looks like an channel with unusual markings. I've caught plenty with spots. But not that many spots. I'm not really sure I'd be able to identify a white cat if I saw one. But I don't think that's one.

Chris, must have just missed you if you were at the usual spot. Took the boy out finally but left at dark since it was a school night. I'll give you a call in the next couple days. Maybe meet you up there early next week some time.

I pulled in 'bout last 10 min. ov legal shooting hrs. & heard 2 shots  as I was getting dressed for the night. On my way down I over heard a old fart explain to a young Lad how they called  the Fowl down to the decoys & had to scare 'em back up to get a fair shot & then explain how they called it's mate back after the first bird was down. The little boy was on the phone saying they were gonna get ready to pack it up soon or might stay after dark. The old fart told the boy he better get back down here & at least  help get the bucket. He lost a bobber last cast or somethin'  The boy caught a fish but the old guy said his was bigger :-)

Way too much tail smack traffic in the area to get any consistency going. First time down there since April.  Plans changed & couldn't get on the water today with the boy. I'm sure he will put us on fish purdy quick. Time ain't slowin'

Just an unusually colored Channel Cat. Nice though, and I know some aquarists who'd pay good money for it!

It was really cool looking when I was trying to net for him.  It's tail whipped up the surface and saw all of those spots.  Kind of freaked out by it after seeing how it was all over his head too.  The spots definitely saved him from my in law's frying pan...  Hopefully good kharma for the next time out?

Maybe it will be good karma on my next trip?  I made it out on Saturday evening and got my first skunking in a long time...  I had a few takes on crawler harnesses, but nothing holding on for me.
