Fri Sat report

Ran up Thurs night late-
Friday and Sat never saw a fish on the move- heard only rare reports of one or two from folks fishing - most were skunked with out even seeing fish.
Some seem to be in dark deep holes like LFZ where I rolled one up near the Church hole but conga lines and timing casts aint my thing so that didn't last- Didnt see them there - aint enough to see any- but a couple seem to be deep in dark places holding and dodging baits.
YES-- reports of the estuary with fish all over it are true- they are spread thin and showing all over it- NOT big pods that lead to real big runs. Stood there for an hour and never saw one brought to hand even with so many boats and bridge guys fishing. The one  caught before I got there had the fin- and it was very dark.
STAY HOME - lots more fishermen than fish- Heck there are more fishermen in any one motel than there are fish in the river right now.

For whatever reason they pushed all the gravel back in front of the ramp in Kiddi but there is still a  lot bout half way across- hope high water doesn't fill in unemployment.

Rumors abound up there, especially the bad run flood fish stuff.
Kinda have mixed feelings though because of so many photos of fish with the fin being caught outside. It is certainly the worst start I have experienced since moving up there part time and having a lot of time to fish.
In four trips over the past several weeks have yet to see one fish on the move. Have only seen ONE in all that time on a stringer and it was in the Estuary.
Can generally always find some earlies by moving around - not this year.
Thursday bout noonish there were only 3 guys left in Kiddie and bout 4 PM no one on the needle.
Only saw 3 deads in two days this trip- one around the A bridge and 2 in the Zone.
Guys are there early and the lots seem to empty as the day goes on- think folks are there because this is the time they had Vacation.
On the bright side -this is kind of like the old days where it didn't start till the very end of the month. Who knows, we might  see better fishing in November with the later runs.

We fisherfolks are the only people in the world who hope to catch the runs.

I believe I saw a state report posted on another site by a guy called fish tech that stated the net seining showed as many or more wild born fish after the flood.
    Flood ain't the issue.

Try the new rod, Wayne?  I was hoping it'd handle the hard runs of the chubs.  Your due, bud, your due.  You've paid in, now for the payback.

The instant a couple of 200 fish pods show up and it gets reported on the web its gonna be a 3 ring CIRCUS.
Had planned on the first week or so of Oct but could run again  with a report- lol.
(would still be more fishermen than fish)

Yes tried it out in the afternoon it has lots of backbone to land those hard fighting chubs. Hoping for a good bend in it this week something to get the blood flowing.

Can understand the weather related indicators of when the fish may or may not run however have seen over the years they often mean little to the fish. The past couple years runs of  early fish  in good numbers with  very low warm waters are  a prime example.
Flood theories may well be negated by the report 2Bob refers to with the hatchling count being OK following the floods.
The lake being colder this year with different wind patterns may well have spread the fish and even slowed maturity resulting in low early returns this season - however have read reports of  the Canadian rivers  doing OK  this season.
If they were so spread and the colder waters are pushing back egg maturity in hens causing them to run later why is Canada doing OK and not this side of the lake ???
Simply saying that this seems to be  an old fashioned year with the fish likely showing in late Sept to early Oct is OK - just kinda hope that all there is to it and it ends up happening that way..
IMHO- even in slow years of old always seemed to be  more 'scouts' by now.
I know- I know- pre run jitters- but am kinda getting a weird feeling bout this- certainly fueled by so many  negative rumors.

I just want to know if we will ever see another banner class of browns like I had in 2009 ? It was off the charts insane and haven't had nearly anything like it since. Same spots, same time but very very few browns . Humm what happened ?
Oh shoot , you guys are talking salmon , sorry . Lol

Rich I remember it was about this time period back then that I was on the LFZ catching those browns and a bunch of coho that fought like steelhead on steroids, and the beauty of it all was that there were few people for some reason!
I sure hope something starts very soon as I'll be there Sunday!

Been decent reports of browns here and there..tuna, I've noticed good stand out years for browns through the years but I've never noticed spots being consistent as I've never hit them good in the same spots... Just may be a coincidence though. With water temps averaging middle fifties should start showing more trout

Never got consistently good at catching Browns- not for lack of trying- lol   90/10
Hos, however, are my favored fish-unfortunately they are on a downslide-think its all on some kind of cycle we may not fully understand.

Maybe it has to do with numbers stocked.  In 2013 in the SR system, they stocked 68K Coho, 168K steelhead and 360K Chinook.  Still, you have a better chance at coho in the SR than anywhere else in the state as all the 2 year olds go to SR, and one in 5 of all stocked goes into SR.  Browns either are not doing well or are using other tribs like Sandy and Grindstone, as they are stocking actually more in the eastern basin than around the Oak where they rule, and the past studies say they don't stray too far from stocking areas.

Thanks for the info- Have heard that over 50% of  Hos were natural in the past few years- even a bit back when they were in better numbers. Combined with the stocking numbers thats a lotta potential fish.
Hope they come back better than the past season or two. Haven't seen them spawning so much  upriver in the past cupla years in the low warm conditions.  Did see them spawning here and there lower mid river real early in those conditions though.
Could always find them upriver into Nov all colored up and active- not lately.
Heck -a few years back there were FRESH dead Hos in Kiddie in February.

Something must be up DSR reported a walleye being caught yesterday. It is the second one I have heard being caught this year. A 21 inched was caught in the black hole in late August.
