From what I have been seeing on reports browns have been targeted and caught when the kings were not cooperating.  There were steel reported mixed in , but no real numbers. RJ stated the same above and has done more research so he would know.

Charters have been baffled on the salmon all season. If you look at the tournament results you would see the numbers and size have been very sub par. Many say its too much bait , others say its due to the 100 year record lake freeze and no thermocline being established .
On the flip side:
Charters have abandoned the search for salmon ( mature ) which is why most hire them and started targeting browns and lakers to put clients on rods. They are easy targets and easily caught, hence you see them on their websites.
Everyone knows this is not a good thing as they can easily be over fished , think of a great perch lake during ice season.
In the next few weeks the mystery of where are the kings will be solved. BTW, I have not seen a coho caught ( from lake reports ) yet.
A good place to research the lake fishery is
http://www.lakeontariounited.com/fishing-hunting/
The open lake discussion is very informative. You will need to register to view the fishing reports.
Hope this answers some questions

It is far more economical to target browns and lakers too.  Staying in close saves a ton of money on fuel costs.

Gerry,
We filled the Mae up (51 gal ) when we got to town. We buzzed, trolled and putted around all day.I know we went at least 8 miles out and trolled some more.
The next day we figured we would see where we were at.
Well surprise , we used about $15.00 in gas.
I have a 4.3 V -6 Chevy motor and it sips gas. I thought about putting a 15 hp kicker that's sitting in my basement on it but that would just be pointless .
I don't have a big 36' rig with twin 225's or a 454 I/O but I would think they are spending less the $50.00 a trip. If its a paid trip then its profit. By staying closer and trolling inshore they may save $25.00 min.
If I were a client and being skimped by $25.00 I'd be ****ed

Rg, my theory is the more you add , the more to go wrong. Trying to keep it simple and functional is the key. The boat came with massive dock and flood lights, all kinds of accessory stuff too. Well our ground issue was a result of that stuff, somewhere .
I got a VHF radio and would hope if the **** hit the fan someone would respond

Went up to Pulaski today and I heard that the first real push was sighted at the DSR came  today.  Was not big but a few dozen at once.  With the water as high as it is I am sure many more were missed. My friend that lives in Redfield said the res. is BUSTING at the seams and just about to spill over.

1570 at Pineville, that's a lot of water for August, should be game on in the upper river once it comes down.

Still going camping in the daks with my few days off end of summer.

I guess the high water will be very beneficial for my "secret" spot come the end of Sept. when I get there.

Might make for more steel upriver then, too. At least I'm hoping. I'll be on the river from 9/30 thru 10/4.

Seems we are getting itchy for some action---
Hope to get back up the first week of Sept.
That said am not  expecting a gangbuster week- hope to be proven wrong----Lake reports kinda make it look like a bit later start this year- more like the days of old.

Nothing major but the water has been high.. Its dropping as we speak to 750 and most runoff has subsided... Its been a week and a half since I wet the line before the water got too high... If I'm lucky I'll be getting it wet this evening the last hour of light :)

Crazy how much changes in a year. This time last year we were worried about if any fish would be left in the river by the end of September. This year we are still waiting for the first to be caught down at DSR. I got my trips planned for next month hopefully its like the good ol days not too many fish which usually means not too many fisherman. I have no problem working for my fish.

Ugly, I think its going to be a stable year being that there are already fish spread out in the river. The healthy river flows have done a good job hiding any fish that have run and also deterring g people from targeting them... The big question is how many are really there? 750 (release) flow is probably about down to pineville right now. But even a 750 flow can hide many fish. I was down at haledane park last night and you're correct ugly because this time last year the paths were worn out with straight lined drags marks from the hundreds (maybe over a thousand) fish that had already been roped up...

Jack we've gotten so much rain I think we can do without for some time. I haven't been keeping a log or anything but I'd say about the past 2.5 weeks or so have averaged over 1000 cfs release along with tons of run off... Ground was absolutely saturated til just a few days ago

Will likely stay at 750 or more- with runoff- till after the regular holiday 750 release. Havent been to Tug lately but might think with ground saturation and runoff up there it may stay a lot higher than guaranteed minimums for a while- I hope.
Would like to see the natural flood fish return have a chance to get in and drop early as they seem prone to doing with a minimum of harassment. Might be good for any early Hos to have a chance too- they need it-have seen them dropping real early in the lower waters the past few seasons mid river..

Trev... When they were gonna back it down to 335 a little over a week ago the reservoir was close to 100% capacity... They backed it down to 750 for a day instead and I believe brought it up to 2000 shortly after and 1500 for days after. Looks like dry warm weather in the near future. I'd like to think we at least stay above 335 from here on out... 500 or 750 would be nice though

The time stamp says around noon today. He "caught" a few salmon too. It has been tough fishing there due to the water releases.

Oswego is always known for early fish just like the salmon river... Not a coincidence I assume since they both were rivers that hosted a large population of native Atlantic's at one time...

Well I Could not let a whole day go by without a post so here it is. Went up to Pulaski yesterday and there were a folks fishing here and there. Reports were that there were a few going by with 1 or 2.  Oswego river has cooled down some and got the word a few small steel caught with a salmon here or there
