Colored eggs.

Hello All

It's about that time. Got to tie a few egg patterns for steelhead season. Gonna use Otters Eggs. I've heard blue is an effective color, but I'm not convinced.  Has anyone ever used blue egg patterns and if so are they effective. I tend to stick with natural colors, but I'm willing to expand a little. Thanks for your help

Blue is popular at the Salmon river. Have fished blue in the Erie tribs with less than spectacular results. Go to colors for me in dirty to high green water are chartreuse, & dark pink (cerise, fuchsia) with chart. veiling. Medium to low flows, Oregon cheese, egg (cream color) very good. Pale pinks, various shades of orange, work well under most water conditions.

what pheasant tail said.  love the otter eggs but have only had luck with the blue in the erie tribs when the weather is really cold in january and february.  don't know if you're aware, but there's a company out of Thornton, CO called Dream Drift Flies that sell alot of varieties and colors of the soft otter eggs.  just do a google search for the company and their site comes right up.

"A few decades ago two British Columbia scientists conducted an experiment with different colored salmon eggs. They fed two year old hatchery raised rainbow trout salmon eggs dyed different colors and then recorded their findings. They arrived at several important conclusions from these tests. First, trout preferred a blue egg over any other single color. Second, when offered two different colored eggs at one time trout fed more actively when yellow and black were presented at the same time. "

I've only tried blue 5 or 6 times but I have never had a hit on blue.  I did fish Crooked Creek one day years ago when 2 young fellows were catching them left and right on baby blue glo bugs.  If I remember right that was in the fall.  Went home and tied some up and I am still carrying them.  Can't even lose them in the trees.

So you've heard blue eggs work...but you aren't convinced...so you're asking for more people to give you the same evidence that won't convince you?

Why not pony up the $3.50 for a pack of blue otter eggs and see for yourself?

Blue works best with snow on the ground.

Some people are like Slinkies...not really good for anything, but you still can't help but smile when you see one tumble down the stairs.
