My first Erie steelhead experience was there in 2001.  Nasty November cold front, with waves splashing over the marina wall.  Loved it.  Only time I ever fished there though.

It's been filling itself in for years now. It became a pond and I assure you there were fish in it. Ahh, miss the good old days of the pig pen.

It's a shame that they are filling it in. I thought that the Fish Commission bought the property. It would of been a great access for Kids or the handicapped.  I mean I remember paying 3 dollars for 6 hrs Fishing.  I caught My first steelhead there. and it will surely be missed

Yes, but with the cement wall still there fishing spots are limited.

The only thing better than 1 day of fishing is 2 days of fishing.

Do they still have the internal docks, or is it just the perimeter?  Those docks were really slim.  I had multiple close calls back when I was 10-12 years old.  I was able to catch myself from taking a swim, and somehow didn't lose a rod or tackle box.  I witnessed others, not so lucky though.  If those docks are in, I couldn't imagine this being open to the public, per the liability.  If they are removed, then I agree, it would be a nice handi-capped accessible / kids fishing spot.  Unless it needs too much $$$ to make it safe.  I had some good memories in there with my Dad.  Would be nice if they reopened, since he isn't able to hike the creeks.

Does the Fish Commission own this as part of the deal when they bought the land to make the parking area?

If they do, really like the idea - as others have suggested - of making this a place for kids and special needs fishermen.

I have been down there several times but never fished it.
I think it would be nice to build a fishable Jetty or dock/pier out from there.
Maybe that's the plan I surely do not know...WCW

Haven't been there since the spring... did they completely fill the pond where the piers were? To the point where its dry?
If that is the case, it would make sense to expand the width of Trout Run for fish to have an easier path upstream and a place to hold.
If not, why not make it for kids and special needs as indicated above???

The piers have been out for years. The high walls are gone now and the marina area itself is like a beach tidal pond. They really cleaned it up.

Trout run was designed as a netting area for the fish commission to net breeding stock.  That's why there is a dam and a chute.   And you're not allowed to fish there because it's part of "Nursery Waters".  Fishing upstream from the chute is illegal because the bottom half of the stream was posted for about 25 years and was made nursery waters to prevent commercialization of the creek.  Hmmmm?

I am fully aware of the intent and purpose of Trout Run... and the regulations around it. Do not fish it.
To widen it, would certainly make it easier for the fish to get to the falls and therefore easier for the fish commission to net them for breeding purposes. I think you missunderstood my point.
Many times early in the year I would see the fish stranded during dry spells because of how shallow it is on their way to the falls.

I truley Believe that if you were to approach this Issue about the Handicap access to Sons they would be willing to help. Who knows what the Fish Commission Has in store but as a License Buyer. I believe Us Fisherman all alike should have a voice. Time and Time again we Hear how they are hurting for Revenue and even though it may not be Million. It's something

What a madhouse that was in it's day ! Tons of Coho entered when it was dredged out at the mouth. It did allow handicapped people easy access to fish but the crowds were unreal. I remember people waiting in line outside the fence waiting to get in as others would leave. I think they allowed 75 people in at once to fish that shift. They had three shifts and if you wanted to stay beyond your shift you had to buy another ticket. The best I witnessed was a guy fighting a fish in the corner where the water entered from Trout Run Creek. That corner was always shoulder to shoulder with fishermen with that fresh water flow blowing in the fish stacked up thick in there. His friend grabbed the long handled net he had and dunked it in to net his buddy's fish and when he lifted it up there were 3 Coho Salmon in the net !         Quick limit !  The Pig Pen is history.

What great memories, About 20 years ago I was pleasure riding to Erie North East on Rt.5 one Sunday completely unaware of steelhead fishing just as I was approaching 12 mi. creek a fisherman  climbing over the guard rail with three huge fish I immediately turned around to see what was going on and to my surprise there they were fishing into the tubes and catching fish after fish, and I’ve been hook ever since, except for the last few years, and last year I didn’t even make a trip to Erie, so I’m hoping things will be better this year, started out with regular fishing gear, then switched to noodle rod, and now fly rod, what a great experience.  Ron
