Traveling

Anybody done any flying lately with their rods and reels?  Most my rod cases are 30"--do you know if you can carry them on?  (I think I stuck a couple of them in a backpack last year and no one said anything.  But I've heard the airlines are tougher this year).  How about fly reels?  Anybody know if I can just throw them in a backpack and carry them on?
Thnx

I flew to Colorado last November with two spinning reels in my carry on with no problems.  Didn't take any rods though.  Best bet would probably be to visit the website of the airline or give 'em a call.

I took my surf fishing rods down to Florida a few years back (flew Southwest Airlines). There was some spare wide-diameter PVC pipe lying around my parent's house that I used, cut a few lengths, and everything fit right in, without even having to take the reels off. Also found some rubber caps that fit, used those, and had no problems.

May be in your best interest to contact the individual airline you plan on flying with, as the policies can differ greatly.

Better call and check with your airline to be safe, rather than relying on an internet message board.

I don't see why you wouldn't be able to bring the fly rod case though.  Last year TSA eased carry on restrictions and started allowing lacrosse sticks, pool sticks, golf clubs, hockey sticks, and ski poles.  Baseball bats are still restricted though, so figure that one out.
