Still have a number of 1 hooks and flies layin around getting rusty--since coming here its mostly 4s, 6s and even an 8 now and then- do have some 2 popsicle though but end up using the 4 pops mostly for very early Kings.
With  a little help and some group therapy from these guys  learned to put up those gaff hooks several years back.
Like the 8 with pink stuff tied to it for Hos.
Its a transition that has to be wanted and believed in  to get it done after all those 'artful snaggin' years.
Gotta be honest and admit to the occasional lining after a few zero taker days up top later in the season though- rare regression I guess.
Perhaps am still in a bit of transition but figured honesty on that might be best- lol. Some always say OHHHH THAT WAS AN ACCIDENT as its bound to happen with lotsa fish around but ----every now and then-------------

Was up this week for a couple of  days- nothing happening yet but decent flows and chilly weather and hard rain- 10 Day looks promising -lots of cloudy weather in the 70s with many chances of rain-nights will be cooler.
 Predictions ?????
Mine is a  few scouts or small pods in the low end  the second week of August ( when I will be back -lol) Most definitely some in the estuary hanging around then or early the week after.
Had a nice trip in the  lower mid the end of last August and it was warmer with lower water.

Riz3... Last year we had below temps for about three weeks from end of July til middle august... And yes fish came in steady numbers... Anything that got above rt. 81 bridge stayed healthy... There was quite an onslaught that took place from ballpark up through haledane and by the time labor day came we had middle 80's and warmer water... I watched folks whipping away in the haledane area...landing foul hooked fish and flopping them back in with no reviving only to have some dumbo upstream run right out and whip it right back to shore...

Predictions: SOON ;)

Well I will also be there the second week of Aug Trev.. The 9th- 17th and my prediction.... 3rd week in Aug there will be some chatter about salmon spotted.
The lake guys are still way out there but saying that a pattern is starting to establish... Still saying the fish are on the much smaller side... 20-23# range.. Hardly any in the 30# class and there have been MANY Tourneys happening now.. But hey, ya never know.. If I did, I sure wouldn't be working for a living and still chasing a dream...

Hope our paths cross.. I gotta a feeling I will be spending LOTS of time in the area till it's time to pack the freezer with fresh venison..

I am all geared up with 2 full boxes (250) of 1/0 octopus hooks wearing estaz chenille.....My coworkers are clamoring for me to bring some mud sharks home....Did that once, it didn't seem worth the effort.

I smell a trip earlier (earlier than end of Sept., that is) than later. That lake/river split you mentioned sounded really good, HT. I did firm up the vacation plans for  9/30-10/5.  Summer is flyin' buy at about Mach 4.  Geez, I gotta go see if the salt didn't eat the guides off the switch. I hope the heck I rinsed it off before I put it away. Time to take off some of the clear intermediates and the shooting heads and spool up with some DT's and switch lines. Almost here!

Fichy,
there is always hope of a killer push in the final weeks leading into sept..
Labor day has treated me well over the years and as our off the chart days the first week in sept has proven (kings one day, ho's a few days later) it can make dreams come true..  Dreams of screaming lines from willing fish is what has always driven me to the shallow waters of the salmon river.. Struggles of fishless days only knowing you are at least in the "game" kept me going back for more..
Like I said , I see LOTS of time spent in Oswego county starting next week until it's time to pick up a weapon of another choice...

so 1/0 guy.. That tentacle puss rig has caught my peak..
250 hooks with a pipe cleaner wrapped (black works best) ripper..
How long do you fish for sharks ? How many do you expect to deposit on the bottom or into fish ? Man that seems like an awful lot for a one or two ought adventure..
As for your co-workers wanting fish , keep everyone you hook for them because when you drag a fish ask backwards , releasing it is only boosting your ego besides killing the fish before it's time..

Last time he said it was 300. Must've wasted 50 hooking us into responding to him. Guy can troll, I'll give him that. Fishing the internet is too easy, though, it's just like snagging.  Takes much more effort to engage in meaningful conversation and debate. At some point, though, you have to  realize that your views aren't welcome and will never reflect the forum's  general opinions. That's when you move on or learn to not express the controversial opinion, thus avoiding ridicule and tension.  Some choose to ignore being polite and using common sense, because they are mentally and emotionally challenged, or they are trolling. Fish ON!

just got back from alaska  sockeye were running tried to fish for them but was told by locals that you had to line them well I hook a lot and was releasing them but again was told that if I wanted to do that then I need to fish some where else because these are what they use to fill there freezers all was done in good taste so I ended up keeping my limit of 3 per day for a couple of days and met people from all over the world   and one gal from my home town here in pa   dolly vardens are just like our brook trout fight a little harder but in the anchor river there must be thousands of them from 2 in. to 20 plus   already looking to go next year  made the trip for under a $1000.00 7 days

Octopus hooks seem to resist snagging.  I had no issues with snagging using this hook last year.  The hook point is curved inward making snagging more difficult.  Tuna, being the superior fisherman that you are, I think you'd know this.

We're not talking about the Octopus circle hooks, so I know this applies.
Tie a piece of line to an octopus hook. Put the hook between you fingers . Pull on the line. The upturned eye will tilt the point so it comes parallel with the line. These hooks are great for holding jumping fish and head shakers, but have no advantage whatsoever in non-snagging. Simple grade school ****.  You'd have to be brain dead not to figure it out.

Hey the first NFL game is on tonight, that should trigger a run soon!
The NFL hall of fame finally took in Andre Reed,a local boy from Allentown Pa.,he was a heck of a receiver and had no fear of going over the middle for his catches.

Bb, I'm not sure about the numbers but from the lake reports and pics I have been seeing ( watching and studying ) the fish themselves have been smaller. Many in the 20-23 # range, very , very few over the 25-30 # class. But hey it's still early and the biggies might just be smarter then the little guys..

We might have been spoiled with larger fish the past couple of years-personally will be very satisfied with fish in the low 20s, heck, even the high teens are great IMHO.
What a GREAT place when fish only in the 20s are noteworthy-- lol.

20 lbers are fine with me.I remember a few years when I was hoping for those 20# fish because the 30# fish were wearing us out. Now that I'm older and feeble the 20# fish will be just about right.

Made a trek to Rochester over the weekend, a nice way to celebrate my 61st.  Drove up Saturday, fished yesterday with my daughter and her boyfriend.  Fished with Capt Sam Zucco on the Dream Catcher out of Shumway Marine.  Hoped to get into some kings/cohos but no such luck.  Had a real good bite with lakers and a brown with the biggest laker weighing in at a shade under 17 pounds until the rain set in about 10:30 AM.  We boated more than a dozen lakers between 12 & 16+ pounds.
General complaint by the capt was that the salmon numbers appear to be down in that area of the lake.

Made dinner reservations for tailwater lodge for that last weekend in September....The few pictures I've seen show a nice interior and my guess is the food is good as folks are saying it's busy on Saturday night.

Might be trying it next week with  family. The one thing the area really needs is a place for a nice dinner. The one downtown never seems to be open when we are looking to eat out.

Hey if you got it then burn it up. The one thing I can say though is you will never get respect from the working man by flaunting it .
