Correct jack... That is a general staple for west coast steelhead... Some even stay in fresh water for more than two years before entering ocean... This is my thought: 1: there is no ocean for them here...lake Ontario is fresh water so if they still have the instinct for salt in their DNA , to them lake o is still fresh water rearing grounds. 2: they have a measily less than 20 mile path back to the lake opposed to thousands of miles like the west coast bullets... We've discussed this one pretty thoroughly in the past, but I'm definitely interested to hear the dec's findings when they are done with the study.

It was a nice cool evening . No A/C needed.
Record rainfall yesterday in Rochester 2.42" , blew the old record outta the water per say.
We got hammered here as well and everything is high and muddy. Sure want to take the Mae out somewhere ( close ) this weekend but it looks like a wash out is coming.
Ah well, all I ask from the rain maker is for a good 9 day run Aug-9th with little wind so lady O will be kind to us..
Start the dance for me Jack, NO RAIN / NO WIND .
Thank you in advance

Thanks guys. I sure hope to swim with the fishes again, maybe in shark territory @ 200 fow this time.
If the seas are kind I have been reading about and would love to try jigging for some lakers. Might even break out the short rod for that. Lakers here on the king ( LG ) are nice but a behemoth out of Ontario would be a fish of a lifetime on a 28" rod. I'm super stoked !!!

Rt, I'll be there opening day in the afternoon. I will be shocked if there's not a contender or at least a sighting... First light is always the best shot in my experience for August but pool outs of heavy pocket water especially shaded can hold these early monsters over In the afternoons... Its a tough time of year to follow extended forecasts as it changes quite often but the warm spell in early august seems to be downgraded as of now... BRING IT ON!!!

I always liked the underdog..  We shall see who wins.. Most likely the Lake which is the enforcer..
Sure will and don't worry.. My fly swatters ( love the term 3fan) may be dusty but they are not rusty.. I still intend to walk in some moving water too..

Hey Rich I know a bunch of guys who use that ice gear on Oneida for the eyes.  I heard the like big white jigs.  A few years ago we did some jigging on Cayuga lake for them.

Clint.
I don't see why it wouldn't work as it does on Lake George in 100 +fow..
The Lake conditions would be the only factor.. Is it a bit over the top instead of just using a normal rod ? Probably but it seems like it would be a blast..
Yup, WHITE is always good for lakers.. I tie up lots of bucktail jigs and tip them with gulp minnows on the ice...
We shall see, I just been doing a lot of research about guys getting into jigging lakers out there.. I know most charters consider them trash fish and avoid them but gosh,,, I pray for ice to be able to catch them, why not a behemoth on the great lake 0 ?

Yeah trev, the anticipation is there but no rumors yet ;) as you know, I'm not a seeker of large runs... I prefer the forefront of the "season". They finally bumped the water up to 750. I'll be shocked if rumors don't start flying by next Sunday. Hopefully folks on these social media networks are learning to take the early reports with a grain of salt if/when it happens...

I've learned my lesson from last year's Labor Day weekend trip....The water is just too warm for these early salmon to survive catch and release fishing.  If I lived in Syracuse, I'd make the trip to fish the DSR on any hint of an early run, but 500 miles is just too far.

Re:Weather thread 2014/08/03 11:14:29 (permalink)
Chartist, 1000's of fish had successfully made it to the upper river by labor day last year. Ask 3fan he saw them ;) That bulk of dead fish you saw had been from the most recent movement of fish and it was due to a few degree rise in water temp from that heat spell... I'm sure the fish would've bee fine if they hadn't been slashed away from the few thousand guys that came up. Water temps were below average til labor day

I had a very successful catch and release early season. In fact all the fish I kept in august stayed alive on my stringer right up til I left the river... I don't keep my fish unless they stay alive. I often revive my fish before I string them and once strung I place them behind an oxygenated pocket out of the sun...

I went to Altmar over Labor Day weekend and, looking over the bridge, I saw a few salmon, but certainly nothing close to hundreds, let alone thousands....Maybe I should've driven to the UFZ.

You silly goose db.. Only a 1/0 will hook drag and release a dead fish. At least the true hard core rippers will rope them without any ego boost needed .

Don't worry 1/0 , there won't be any left after next week when I put the 9 day smack down on them. You might as well just stay home..

Re:Weather thread 2014/08/03 13:20:03 (permalink)
For whatever reason- high temps ? - low waters ?- the fish didn't seem to go way up last year in great numbers although they came into the river in very good numbers.
As I recall the hatchery had difficulty with enough for eggs coming in naturally, even though the slaughter below didn't seem to affect the good numbers getting into mid river.
Saw a lot of spawning happening with Hos and Kings in the lower mid.
Yes there is always some, but the past 2 years IMHO the lower spawn has dramatically increased- especially with the early Hos. They just didn't seem to get up high in their usual numbers early to mid season even though many were seen pushing up and dropping eggs in mid river.
Admittedly my time on the river was down to just a half dozen trips last year and missed most of  the Oct times for the most part.
Managed to bump into a very late run of Kings spawning up river after many fisher folks had finished for the year in some cooler more normal flows..

It's proven scientific fact that 87.32 percent of Salmon only hold at bridges with two parking lots.  Between the sharks Dime and 3 fan have landed over the past few decades you could have  a decent  run all its own.  Absolute dumb friggin' luck, every one of them.

I saw numbers in the Pineville area that I have not seen it years. especially in the deep holes where they just sit.     Funny thing I saw last year.  There was a group of there guys fishing one of those deep holes and I mean fishing there were drifting egg sacks. They were hooking up quote consistently. Trouble is the were getting suckers, fallfish, chubs. Some of them were a foot plus long. They could not keep them off.   At least they were hooking up.

Re:Weather thread 2014/08/03 17:30:45 (permalink)
Agreed Clint-for some reason they -to me at least-kinda slowed and stopped up above the bridge-took a couple of long walks up that way last season  and the further up  the fewer fishes. Again - the hatchery  never got enough and had to go out for  spawners. ( think they netted them someplace).
The holes seemed to fill with fishes that just sat there.
Some went up- guys will say- well I found them up higher- and they clearly did- but not in comparison to what was normal IMHO. Heck, that upper area is my mainstay and I quit it to fish lower mid for the first time in quite a while.
Found some great water down there too.
Charlie is 100% correct though - ya should never ever waste time and energy walking  much beyond a bridge with a parking lot on the SR- just not worth the effort. That and the pools at the end of the parking lot paths, they put them there for a reason and its because that's where all the fish are.
Another good tip is to always wrap some of that flat lead on your hook.
Also -I now carry a small down pillow in my truck and when making flies on my bluefish hooks I just scotch tape a piece of white Down to the hook just behind the lead wrap. The white Down shows up real good even in murkey waters.
 No more secrets----

They were going thru Pville - trestle area in small pods from mid Aug on last year.
2  3 or 4  at a time 20 or so in the whole pod and then blank water.
But there  were 100s in the upper river by the end of Aug.
I am tying a thousand million of those cool sounding pipe cleaner flies Tuna posted about.
I am going to use octopus hooks cause I can pretend they are circle hooks and nobody will ever know I am a dirty snagger.
Creative flies like that are the bombdigity in my book.

Oboy Oboy I can hardly wait.

I think some of you use those leaded treble hooks I once saw some Ruskies using in Michigan...I ordered another 100, 1/0 red octopus with hot pink and black chenille.....I'll use the hot pink in the DSR and the black in Altmar.....if you see me, come say hello.  I'll be clad in Simms gear swinging a Beulah switch rod with a Nautilus reel and a fat Monte Cristo number 25 hanging out of my snout.

OK-- one more secret--there is a cable above the LFZ and its there just  to keep folks from the outflow of a big concrete Sewage Plant in case of an overflow -just a safety line- streams up from the cable  on the right. That outflow stream is a great place to fish, for some reason they tend to stack up in the little stream. There is also a cement stream up there that ya can fish at night.
