Spent the evening on the Yough

Spent a few hours on the Yough this evening. Not a whole lot of action, but I did shock myself with this guy. Muskie? The lack of markings is throwing me off. Obviously a pike/pickerel/muskie relative but I havent caught enough of these guys to be sure which. Hit on a plastic swimbait. The pic doesnt do him justice, beautiful fish. I was in a hurry to get him back in the water and didnt wanna screw around trying for a better photo.

No, the bank there close to the water is extremely soft mud. Couldnt really help him getting in there, he was back in the water fast and swam right off.

I tried to be as gentle with him as possible. He was a fighter and I couldnt really stop him from writhing. When i got him close to shore he flopped pretty hard and ended up jumping half onto the bank which is super soft mud. Thats why the mud is on his head.

He wasnt hooked too badly. I got it out quick, snapped a couple.fast pics and had him right back in. Didnt even need to hold him in the water during release. He took right off. Im confident he lived. Im not out to harm fish especially guys like that. Unless Im going to eat them which isnt often I treat them as gently as possible.

No matter how perfect you release / handle a fish someone will call out something here =) just ignore it and move on the next big catch!

Agreed. I for one think the "carp cradles" and "handling mats" are rediculous!

Regardless of whether a fish 'swims right off' or not, if you intend to CR, should be as careful w/ the fish as possible, and avoid touching them w/ dry hands.  Dry hands=slime loss=exposes the fish to parasites or infection.  Nice catch, BTW, definitely a Musky.  Tiger Musky, cross between Pike and Musky, have more dramatic markings.

Maybe, but keep in mind they come from a place where guys catch the same fish over and over for decades on end.

If you think the mats are a bit much, how about 50 guys gathering for a carp funeral? http://www.kentonline.co....-funeral-of-gi-a82356/

Carp fishing is big in Europe.
I had a Samsung Blue Ray player once. It had all sorts of internet channels and one was the Carp Channel. The channel was fashioned after CNN world news and had the latest updates around Europe for tournaments and such with music and all. It was a hoot to watch. Player broke and I replaced it with a Sony. Lost the carp channel.
The one guy at the forefront right on the picture looks like one of the Carp channel stars.
Can't make this stuff up.

It's probably the most popular fish in the UK, with the possible exception of Atlantic Salmon. Rough fishing is also pretty well liked. There are whole magazines dedicated to catching the equivalent of creek chubs and suckers.
