One Fly Flies

I was wondering if anyone would/can tell me what flies have been the winners in the past One Fly competition? Or even possibly what flies you have attempted to win with or want to try this year. I am trying to get an idea what sort of fly I want to bring to the competition this year with it being my first trip to the event. As of right now I am leaning towards an egg pattern but wondered if most people tend to swing buggers or leachs instead.

It's an impossible question to answer. Too many variables. Stream conditions, flow, recent "hot" trends, each person's confidence in a certain style of fishing, etc. I plan on deciding on a fly the morning of when I know what the actual conditions are. Things have a way of changing overnight when the weather kicks up.

Don't worry about it... Fish the fly that is appropriate for the conditions, and area you plan on fishing.

You won't know until that morning anyway. What you should do is pick the fly you'd never give a second thought at, and fish it.

Loopy gave some pretty good advice. I've looked at all the presented duplicate flies (for the First Out box) and you would expect mostly eggs and spawn but they make up less than 15% of the entries. AND I don't think an egg has ever won.

I assumed he was asking what flies have won in the past more importantly than which one he should use.

I used a black and chartreuse size 6 intruder last year and the fish liked it a lot.....I tied it on the picnic table at the campground and put it to use shortly afterward.  The water was high, brown, and the fish were not visible.

So that solves the question of what worked last year. Loomis won. Now I need to hear from W-W and coyote.
