Ok so I'm thinking that a #6 weight fly rod is too light for steelhead? Any thoughts on this. I came across a cheap-o  (free) 8 foot Pflueger and I want to try fly fishing, if not I will put (GASP!) a spinning reel and make it into a noodle rod

    Thanks !

maybe you should try using the search button, as this has been brought up in conversation more than enough times since you've been here.

IMO, this time of year 4# line of any kind isn't gonna cut it unless you plan on either breaking off or fighting fresh silver bullets for a 1/2 hr+. Which won't go over well for anyone including yourself. I go 6# minumum for leader material and I use 12# mainline this time of year on my pin. 10 or 8# mainline on my spinning outfits. Good quality line types are Siglon F, Raven Line, Suffix Siege, and Cortlan Endurance. If you plan on going the lighter line route, at least have a longer noodle rod of 9'6" to 13' to take off some of the pressure on that line. Good Luck.

    Pwned.

    Anyways,

All the above information is correct, however I would not waste my money on Seagaur grand Max....

If you are fishing with a spin rod, then straight mono can work just fine, some guys prefer a leader, mostly 4-6 lb Floro.  I'd get a spool of Cabelas mono for that...and look who it's made by.

    http://www.cabelas.com/link-12/product/0001615313485a.shtml?cmCat=perf&rid=0987654321&cm_mmc=Performics-_-CSE-_-GoogleBaseUSA-_-0001615313485a&mr:trackingCode=2A5CE7CC-958E-DF11-A0C8-002219318F67&mr:referralID=NA

If you are going to go the fly fishing route and want a true measured X tippett, you really cannot beat Beartooth Flouro....so cheap and you get so much compared to these other yuppie companies out there.  9 dollars for 50 yards is hard to beat.  Stay with 3X for green water, 4X for clear water, and 5X for August-September.  I know these people personally and they really make some nice leader stuff....all themselves too.

    Good luck man!

    Edit:

I also wanted to add that Fishusa has the best monofilament available for sale right now, its made by a German company called DAM.

TECTAN Damyl is a mono that has higher strength and lower diameter, making for an excellent steelhead line.  I found that using a half spool of cheap mono "dummy" line with the DAM blood knotted to the dummy well beneath the length you are casting to prevent line twist/backlash has worked great for me.

I use the 7.3 lb test  line, it has the diameter of most popular 4 lb tests.

TECTAN is good stuff. Theres a number of fly fishers who load tectan onto tippet spools for their tippet material.

6 lb flurocarbon, my fav is P-line either clear or Halo. I like the halo because I'm old and can't see that great, especially in low light. I can see it but the feesh can't. Real good knot strength, low memory, and invisable in the water, plus it does very good in extreme cold.

What is the differance if you use a full spool of fluro rather than usen a spool of something else and then fluro for a leader?

ok just figure going with just the fluro would be easier then tieing in a leader. Also tieing in a leader kinda makes a weak spot.

7weight SA clear sinking tip. Then a cortland line loop. Then 8 feet of 8 pound test seagar or frog hair  fluorocarbon.

Flouro line is not only more expensive, but it also sinks. Sinking line, in most cases, is un-desirable. I also do not like the properties of flouro as far as a casting line is concerned. The modern age monos are really come a long way. I'm really liking that Sufix Siege.
