well to get back to the original topic. I just got back about an hour ago, and the lake wasnt fishable, walnut was packed to the brim with knuckleheads, one kid chased 2 steelies up and down the creek for couple hours above stop sign hole, elk was fishable. if your planning a trip, go to elk late at night before all the crowd gets there and youll catch fish. i got there at 2:00am last night and i was there for 20 minutes and had 2 hook ups on single eggs with #16 hook. people were hooking up every 2-3 mins for bout an hour. i drove up from venango co. and ill say it was worth the good time.

WHEN YOU GET OLDER, YOU WILL REALISE THAT GETTING TO THE STREAM AT 2 AM FOR A COUPLE OF HOOKUPS ISN'T WORTH THE EFFORT SPENT. THE NOVELTY WILL WEAR OFF REAL FAST. BIG FISH IN ****TY CONDITIONS ARE STILL BIG FISH IN ****TY CONDITIONS, AND AFTER YOU CATCH A FEW THOUSAND YOU WON'T EVEN THINK THEY ARE BIG FISH. YOU MIGHT EVEN THINK ABOUT THE 12" BROOK TROUT YOU CAUGHT IN A REMOTE AREA IN SOLITUDE.

wasnt there just for those couple of hookups. like i said its a good time. fish are biting late at night when the pressure is off a bit. if anyone wants to go up. youll have a good time. if you wait for the water to go up there will be even more fisherman. but itll still be a good time. point is if you can afford the time, money, and want to go fishin, go. if you wanna wait, wait.  never listen to them ones that tells everyone not to go so they wont end up fishin in his spot.

Hardcore fisher, the conditions and the fishing suck really bad right now especially if you are just starting to fish for steelhead.  It will turn you off real quick from the whole experience.  There is no other way of putting it.  Checking the weather reoprts are more important now than checking the fishing reports.  Watch and wait for rain and alot of it.  I'm sure this board will explode when the rain hits and you'll know when the good times hit.   I have been fishing the tribs for a number of years now and even though I could go to mouths of any creek and hook up a few times everyday, it's just not worth my time.  It's so much more fun and rewarding when there is more water to work with and you can go miles from the lake and nail them.  When the conditions are good there will be just as many fisherman but there is a huge difference.  Were you ever at an outdoor show and they have one of those tanks or pools (or whatever you call them) and you get a rod and squeeze in to throw on top of a bunch of spooked fish?  Fun as a child, but, yeah it blows that bad in Erie now.

nightowl, not to offend you or anything, but what is the purpose of you repeately promoting night fishing at elk. afterall your purpose in doing it is to avoid crowds and spooked fish. I see you posting reports and messages all over the place. If you enjoy solitude at night, maybe you shoulnt plug it all over the internet. if only 10 of the hundreds of guys reading it actually do it, you would have some company. unless thas your motive for plugging it.
It really does stump me, why people find it necessary to post about their methods to avoid crowds on the internet. it must serve some primary purpose to those people but for the life of me, I can't find a reasonable reason.
please explain.

ps if you really do need someone to fish with, just post a thread "fishing partner needed" I'm sure alot of these guys have the same problem and would love to meet up and enjoy a night/day fishing outing.

Duud, the reports are accurate.
There are some peeps who catch fish every time they go
(even in these conditions)
Sometimes, they even catch a bunch.
Most, however will have a tough time of it and not fair hook a one

I just came back from a two week trip on the tribs and the fishing was good.Water was low to very low and clear. If you want to catch fish go to the lower rnds of the streams and start to walk up stream. A few streams have fish in the first couple holes, others beyond rt. 5.I left Friday morning so this info. is not current but I do not believe things have changed because there was not enough rain to raise stream levels.Fish flys on light tippet or minnows and single eggs.Try a few jigs from the local tackle shops and move around and ask questions. If some one is catching fish watch what they are doing, hopefully not lifting. One question for ronnie does your last name start with a D? If so you know me.

Hardcore, you will learn that if you don't respond it will go away. If you do it will only fuel the fire. Guru can be very funny! Of course, as long as he is stickin it to someone else. lol

My Wife said, if I go fish'n one more time, she'll leave me! God, I'm going to miss her!

Why is it  that more anglers do not hit the bay for steel head ? there are no crowds the fish fight hard and long in deep water and the action is fast, I fished East ave break wall yesterday and today and only had one other angler around. the ore dock slip was crowded it had six anglers and all limited on spoons, after 10:00 there was no one. Cherry street dock only had one angler all day. I my self don't eat steel head but love to hook into a couple a day. the bay will only get better and better as the season comes on. Every December around the holidays a bunch of anglers that I fish within the fl. keys come up for trout and we go to mill creek 20-30 fish a day is a normal catch of the day for each angler,a little cold and iced up but great bragging pictures for the southern anglers.

Things are well,I spent 2 weeks fishing and guiding the tribs.I canceled 2 trips and gave the other anglers options due to the low water but all was good.My specialty is dry fly fishing for them so the low water does not take away from doing it. This is only the second time in 35 years that the water was this low for this time of year. Also the water temps got so high I did not fish for them for 3 days.We went carp fishing at linesville using sucker spawn on are 6 weight rods.Yes this is fun as well. If you have any questions you can contact me dirrect for any info I can help you with.

I've been wondering this myself, especially right now with the creek conditions. I'd like to give it a try but first have to do a little research as to where would be safe with a fly rod. The breakwalls sound pretty ideal...might have to invest in some sinktip line.

The Chery st. marina is perfect for a fly rod, as is the south pier at the east end, East ave brake wall is good, liberty park is good, and if you don't mind the walk and solitude the ore dock at the end of mill creek will put you on top the fish and you will be by your self unless you bring some one. streamers or bead head fly will hook up tough. If you have not fished open water with a fly rod you will be taken by surprise at the first couple 40 yard runs and the power of steel in open water.
