Line Choices
Can anyone please tell me the best kind of line to buy for steelhead fishing. I went to wal-mart and to Poor Richards and there are so many different brands of line out there I did not know what brand to buy? Any suggestions will help with this line head-ache I am having. I have a spinning reel and looking to use 6# line or 4# line. What brand has the most strength and lowest visibility. I was close to buying Spiderwire, Stern, and Berekly. Is it best to buy clear, green, blue line? Not sure what actually to buy and begging for some assistance. Thanks to all.

Your choices at Megalomart are pretty limited. They don't seem to know about steelhead fishing.

I usually use Vanish. its supposed to be invisable in water. Ive been satisfied with it and never had a problem besides the fact that it is hard to see at night. good, for me to catch fish. bad, for me to tie on. hope this helps. really anything brand will work. just test em out and see what you like.

anything thats 4lb I like pline myself and have done well. others say 4lb gamma. Its your call.

I've fished most of them and they will all work. I buy mine based on limpness mostly. When I was steelhead fishing I'd run 6 lb main line mono on the reel, usually trilene (blue grey box when they still sold it, not XT straight blue box), AN-40, or P-line. Then for the tippet I'd fish a 3' piece of 4# fluoro fly tippet (not standard fluoro bulk) either tied to a tiny swivel or with a blood knot.
In the lake I like yellow mainline because you can see it easier when you have a fish on and it goes hard right or left.

I have used a wide variety of lines in the past and it the McCoy Mean Green is hard to beat. I landed a 21 lb salmon last fall on 4 lb McCoy. It was a pretty good fight and the fish was not the freshest in the world, but the line held up well. I use this often on my spinning reels for steelies and other fish. It is not too expensive and performs well. A guide friend I know uses it almost exclusively on all of his reels. I would definitely give the McCoy a look. McCoy "Mean Green"

bigguyron said it best when he said 4# gamma its tough as nails. its only downfail is it gets burs easily from rocks and trees.

Bughawk is right on McCoy Mean Green.
Very strong w/ no memory. I spool it on my lake/noodle rod and use a 6-9ft. section on all my fly rods when fishing the tribs.
I use it on my 10wt. up on the NY tribs and have landed many big kings, steelies and browns w/ no trouble.

NO No No .... You can't let em get off ... 200# cable off the downrigger EL do use a big jon electric so you don't hurt your wrist. I use a 100 # spectra leader ( so the big samen ) don't c it. Winch em in ..... 5 ot turtle hook with a 12# weight attached two feet behind the hookuaranteed three on fish on each cast.

I like Gamma a lot. You can actually use the 6lb. It has the same diameter as other company's 4lb and actually test out close to 8. You can even use it without a lighter leader. I use to use 6lb and a 4lb leader but don't anymore.
