Steelie Spinning Reel Help

Looking to buy a decent reel for my first steelheading trip but do not want to break the bank. Anyone know anything about this used reel I may purchase? It is a SHIMANO SPIREX 400RE? Or should I purchase soimething new for about 30 bucks? Any and all help is appreciated.

rear drags don't compare to a front drag system.
Dicks had Okamus on sale reg. 79 bucks for 19 dollars & 98 cents. - 10 dollar coupon/ 50$ & over purch. picked em up for 14 dollars & some cents each.
I picked up a few for the kids salmon fishin next week. looked & felt purdy good for $15 buckaroos.

I have landed steelhead and three 3' and one 3 1/2 foot shark with an Okuma Inspira IS-30 with no problems.
Next reel will probably be a Okuma VSystem V30
Penn SS reels are also good-avoid the graphite series.

the problem i had with top drags was my whole top came unspun when i hook up in the lake. the fish pulled my drag so lond he spun it right off. then i lost the wing nut and that was the end for that reel.

Those Okuma Stratus GT's are a really good deal. I got a Stratus GT 50. Although I have not been able to put it to the real test (didnt hook up any decent sized fish while fishing with it) It has performed very well in a salt water enviroment. Its been dunked several times, tossed into the sand and still works like new. Cant go wrong for the price.

I've been using Spirex reels for 4 years now, with no problems. I personally like the rear drag because it is easy to adjust while fighting a fish. I like my older Spirex over my newer one, though. I use reels in the 2000-2500 class. The 4000 model that you are considering is a bit big for my taste, plus when using light line, you will have to spool alot of line on the 4000 to fill the spool & you don't need that much line. I have never been spooled using any of my Spirexes & I even fish big, toothy fish with light tackle all the time. The drag is pretty smooth for an inexpensive reel.

i DON'T THINK YOU CAN BUY ANYTHING FOR 30 BUCKS THAT ISN'T A PIECE OF SH-T.[UNLESS IT'S SOME BIG MARKDOWN.]  AFTER USING PENN 716 REELS[ THE OLD GREEN ONES] FOR 25 YRS., I SWITCHED TO FINOR LITE 100, LOVE THEM, NO LINE TWIST. HAVE 4 NOW. FIRST ONE I USED 3 YEARS [ OVER 90 DAYS] WITH NO BREAKDOWNS. THEY RETAIL FOR AROUND 90 BUCKS, FOR SOME REASON THEY WERE SELLING THEM FOR 29 BUCKS AT J'S A COUPLE OF YRS. AGO.

Just won a vsystem v30 @ the Big Run haven't tried it yet. Have trouble putting my sustain or catalist on the shelf. ocassionally will use one of my old stradics but the sustain is hard to beat. Liked it better than the stella I sold on ebay last year. Oh, this thread was about $30 reels - nevermind. Dave

I am waiting to find a vsystem for around $75
I am sure the prices will come down when they have flooded the market as Okuma allways seems to do.
When a new model comes out the price is vey high-in a year it is about half.

Yeah, I know, I think it retails for around $150 now.  Probably find it for less on ebay.  Dave  just looked on ebay a 20 high bid was $58 w/8 days left.

A Shimano Spirex reel costs $59.95. While not an expensive reel, it performs well & isn't a $30 piece of crap, as stated above. Shimano makes reels from $9.99 to $499.99, so don't think that just because it says shimano on it, that it is crap. Although the Spirex is only $59.99, it is far from the cheaper line of reels made by Shimano. I don't sell reels, I only use them. My opinion is based on personal experience & I like the Spirex & have tried a friends cheaper Shimano's that I wouldn't use if they were free. So, fish on & remember that the fisherman catches the fish & the fish really don't care how much your equipment costs. "Knowledge is the rule -- equipment's just a tool."
