This is a dumb question but how do you get the eggs out of the steelhead?

The eggs can be harvested when you clean the fish.  You can use them fresh right out of the fish as bait, or you can cure them.  If I am going to cure some eggs, I cover them in borax and leave them in the borax in for 24 hours.  I then wash them off and they are ready to use.  The eggs can be frozen until they are needed.  You can also use the commercial treatments.

If I keep a female and get her cleaned at PR or BAC, do they give you the eggs or do they keep them for themselves? If they keep them, is there anywhere that WILL give you the eggs out of the fish when they clean them? I normally keep one or two a year to to eat, but I don't think any of them have been females.

Actually, I don't think they can sell the steelhead skein, but they do accept donations for them.  The king and brown trout eggs they sell.

Eggs are a deadly bait for steelies.  Right now I would tend to think single eggs would be a good choice, along with single egg patterns.

No problem.  As far as I know it is illegal to sell any sport fish or fish products harvested in PA.   It is also illegal to use fish or fish products as barter.  I know someone who told me a Fish Commission official told him if you give a person a fish and they give you something in return, it is considered barter and you could be fined.... I don't think this pertains to giving a fish to a neighbor and afterwards they offer you a beer while you sit around to BS...., but there may some folks out there who might find something wrong with that...

But what if it's my fish and they're just cleaning/filleting it. If it's a female with eggs, do I get to keep them or does the store keep them? I know I can buy the eggs at PR and some of the other bait shops in Erie, but if I want to cure my own from a fish I caught, would I have to clean the fish myself to get them?

    Killdeer,

I am not sure.  I would think if they clean the fish for you, you can ask them for the eggs.  Or what you can do is remove the eggs before they clean the fish, which of course kinda defeats the purpose of someone else cleaning the fish I guess...

P.R. will give you the skein from your fish. Just ask when you get it cleaned.
