Mini Foo
What mini foo color and size is best for steelhead? What is used, never used a mini foo? Is it best to tip with a magot or something else?

Either one works fine. Black ones are good along with a few other colors. I would tip them with a maggot or wax worm to and fish under a float. Or if you just want to jig them then no need to tip.

thanks Ax. How far down should the mini foo be from the float itself? Also, will the black mini foo's work well in dirty water once the rain comes?

I use mini foo's like now. Clear, low water, no drift. Black and white are best. If you 're going to use a float (make sure it's skinny and preferably clear topped with a bright color), give them a little tap every minute or so. Distance from float -- 3-4 feet although it depends on water depth too. I like about 2/3 of the way up the water column. I tip them with waxies. Black is usually best for dark water, however, I'd be throwing something stinky. I'd say white is a bit more productive for clear water. If you see the fish inspecting it, take the float off and jig it.

From what I've experienced over the years, if you're drifting with a float I'd go with drab colors (black, brown ect... white also works) and tip the jig with maggots or a single waxworm. When actualy jigging, I like to go with jigs with a crap load of crystal flash, also keep switching colors. My best colors for jigging are black w/flash, blue w/flash, and white w/flash, although they all work at sometime or another. Tipping with bait is not necessary when jigging. -Tim

Get jiggy with it!!! It is good to have a variety of colors. The other morning the fish were jumping on white jigs and then turned off. A fellow threw on a black woolly bugger and slam. I put on a black jig fly and sure enough, I got a hit. If they are not hitting one color try another. By the way, olive with rainbow flash is one of my favorites as well as light grey. I don't use mini foo, but tie a fly that is similar and is much more durable.

Just thought it would be appropriate to plug the site that brings this board to us for free. It is not free for FishUSA to keep this site running. I don't mean to attack anyone for shopping eslewhere by any means. I have only made a few orders myself, and spend a ton of money on fishing. But do appreciate the site, and would like to see it's future. I'd suggest that everyone make an order, next time you are going to stock up. Their prices are very reasonable, and the shipping is very fast (even standard mail, will be 1-2 days for most PA). Especially the next time you look at a reel or something higher priced. If it is within a few bucks difference, remember that you are not just getting a reel from them, you are getting all of this entertainment and knowledge. You are also helping out one of the good guys in the world, not Sam Walton's family or****

Newbie, White or black jigs will work well, but I tie in a little krystal flash either rainbow, pearl, or silver. Switch color combinations often unless they're crushing one color. White with rainbow flash is my go to jig. But the last two outings grey or white maribous caught the fish. 1/32 oz, 1/64 oz, and even 1/80th of an ounce when the water is super clear. Putting meat on the hook is not nearly as important as scent. I keep a little cured skein just to smear a little on the jig to cover the snuff smell. Works great. Steve

newbe - not trying to be a smart arse here, but do you actually read the responses to your questions? do you read the reports page? in the past few weeks, many guys have given directly given you a ton of advice on what works for steelhead this time of year and later. asking the same questions over and over again and not paying attention to the answers is not going to get you any closer to landing a steelhead. there comes a time when you just have to go out and fish and learn through trial and error. on any given weekend from now through april, there will be hundreds of steelhead caught on mini foo jigs of every size, shape & color; as well as spoons, spinners, egg sacs, power bait, shiners, single eggs, nightcrawlers, maggots, wax worms and flies. there will be lots of fish in the next few weeks caught at the mouth of all the tribs by casting spoons, egg sacs, power bait, shiners and probably even mini foo jigs of every size shape and color. i'll be in erie this saturday with a few friends and would be glad to meet up with you and teach you a little about fishing for steelhead. i'm no expert, but i know enough to catch a few now and then. send me a pm if you want. until then, just get out there and fish. try a bunch of different stuff and find what works.
