Fishing for SteelHead Help???

???? Can a Veteran of fishing for Steelhead at the mouth of Walnut please tell me what color spoons to use to hook a Steelhead? Should I be using a spoon to fish for them there or should I be using something else. Also, what size spoon and pound of line is best for the steelhead? Any information will help the new guy here. What tackle should I use for both the mouth of Walnut and once the steelies and trout get into the creek? Thank you.

    New,
All the basic information is available in the information bar at the beginning of the homepage.  There are recommendations for just about everything.  But here is some help; K-O wobblers,6-8 pound test on a noodle rod.  There are really very few places to fish a spoon on the creeks unless you are actually just trying to snag the fish, plus there are sooo many anglers that you will probably hook someone else's line.  Your best bet for the creeks is the same noodle rod and a small jig head, or (Gasp, gag, Retch) a # 10-12 hook with a small piece of powerbait or a minnow or a single salmon egg, or wax worm, or magot.  Even better is a fly rod with a #14 salmon spawn fly nymphed about 15' from your rod tip.  If you do fish spoons, go small, smaller, smallest.

Don't know much about fishing the lake at the mouth of creeks, but have caught a few on a green & silver Little Cleos in lower Elk early in the season.  Have done very poorly on spoons overall, but have had much success by following the advice above.

Single eggs on a #14 circle hook
Skein or egg sacks with a #14 gold trebble hook.
Minnows -live or dead on a #10 red circle hook.
    Little Cleos -small blue/silver
Black Mini Foo with a maggot
Power Bait -Pink, Lime, Orange or Rainbow Sherbert on a #14 trebble hook
All with at least a 18" florocarbon leader
Only use trebble hooks if you plan on keeping the fish.
If water is clear use 4lb mono or a florocarbon 4 or 6lb leader.
    Stained water 6 or 8lb

If you still want to fish spoons. I use smaller Swedish pimples. They look like a minnow when retrieved. But mind you doing it in a crowd could bothersome to some....

I can hear the conversation already. No. Mr. fish warden I use these small chunks of crack to go to Erie and catch steelheads.
