Have a Laugh. . . on ME!

Gentlemen,
I had to debate posting this out of embarrassment, but here goes.  This labor day weekend my daughter sugested that I travel with her and her family down to Knoxville, TN to visit some relatives.  My thinking:  Knoxville = Smokies,  Smokies = brook trout in small streams.  So I packed my gear in my van and travelled down to my daughters house.  When I arrived at her house I unpacked all my gear since we were going to take her SUV.
At the last minute it was decided that we would take my van and my son-in law volunteered to pack it back up.
Well, Sunday was a beautiful day in the Smokies and when the "family" went "shopping"  I headed out to the south end of the Park.  I finally found a place to park by a stream and went around to the back of my van to put on my gear.  Waders: Check;  Boots: Check;  Vest:  Check;  Hat:  Check;  Rod:   Rod:  Rod?  That's right guys 256 miles to fish and no rod!   You may now rub it in!

    Skip,
Oh, it's even worse.  When we got back to my daughters' house there in the corner of the garage were:  3 noodle rods, 5 fly rods, 1 spinning rod, and three bamboo rods. (my usual arsenal).

    Gentlemen,
Actually I'm not bummed, sad or P.O.'d.  I took the time to waddle along the creek and LOOK for fish.  Talked with some other anglers, and helped a new fly fisherman catch his first fish on a fly:  a 10" rainbow.  (Interesting note:  This poor guy was fishing a streamer that had to be about a #2 hook that he was told would catch trout.  After a switch to a copperstonescud he connected.)  There is a bright side to everything.  Had a good day and was not concentrating on ME but rather WE.   Hope this carries over to the One Fly.

Labor Day, Little river, Cades cove, serenity and flowing water and nothing to put a royal wulff on to drift in front of a wary brookie. Love that place! My Daughter, Son-in-law and Grandaughter came here from there ( I tried to make it work the other way but she wanted to come home) Before they moved to Knoxville they lived 15 minutes from Little River Outfitters. Too tempting and they understand my sickness.  Dave

Not 256 miles but it seemed like it, 9 miles out to the second trench on a bumpy lake, and no tackle box

If your gonna mess with the Kings Queens you better watch your Ace Jack!

    elephanthead,
Didn't make it in to Cades Cove.  Traffic was bumper to bumper (Labor Day) But I was on the Little about half way to the falls.  Stopped below the overlook.  Did you ever fish the little when there were tubers in the creek?  Absolutely hilarious.  Cast, wait on tuber; cast, hook fish, play fish between tubers.  Have tuber stop and ask "are there fish in here?"  The best question Is:  "Hey man, Are you like, fishing?"  A:  No, I'm hiking, but I hate the trails and I always carry this long, thin, walking staff.   Here's your sign!
As a side, I am always amazed at the number of people who go in to Cades Cove and do not even have a clue about the function of the equipment or the buildings they see.  And they regard a fisherman as part of the educational experience.
WOW!  Idea!  I need to go down there some day with my old-time outfit and fish with bamboo and my wicker creel.  Except I just can't move that well anymore.

Jack, I feal your pain! I was checking out my gear and cleaning my rods yesterday. I took my vest out and emptied everything out and could not find my box with all my beadheads and dries. Turned everything upside down looking for them. It took me years to gather what I had. All I can figure it fell out while loading up from my last trip. Very painful.

Indi, Gotta love those tubers. They always ask how you're doin ? The best was when I was below the first bridge past LR Outfitters in a deep pool finishing out the day (should've known better) when all of a sudden a shadow went past and a kid came hurdling off the bridge in perfect cannonball form right in front of me. I congratulated him on his form and called it a day. Dave

    Dave,
If you ever get a chance, fish the little just below the park after the "Season" when all the tourists have left and the camps are closed.  I was stunned at the amount and size of the fish in some of those pools.  You can actually see fish stacked up in some of the deeper pools.   I have no idea where they are in the summer but in Nov, Dec and later they sure are there.  AND they will hammer a muddler or a joes' hopper.
That's one of my BIG thrills:  throwing out a large surface fly like a hopper, or floating a muddler, and having a big fish wack it on the surface.  Whoo - wah!
