I would think the PI would be good. The bay or lagoons where he can catch bass and pan fish. He will have a blast and plenty of room to cast.

Are you wanting to teach him/her to fish for steelies or just to fly fish in general?  One of the easiest ways to learn is to find a small pond with tons of bluegills and have them start there.  Another option would be to do some wading at Presque Isle.  There is a lot of room.  If you park in the first couple of lots on the bay side, it is not too hard to wade most of that area.

I want to start him out on blue gills and other pan fish then work him up to steelie fishing.I just started fly fishing myself so I am really learning myself. We go camping most weekends and he loves to fish the ponds at the campgrounds. He just has not tried the fly rod yet.

First of all how old is he and how big is he. You want to make sure he can handle the equipment ok. If not he will become discouraged real easy. If he can handle a 8 or 81/2 ft. 5-6 wt. med. action with a DT line thats the way I would go.  I would start him out in the back yard with the basics and set a target at a distance that he can reach without to much trouble. Then let him extend the distance a little at a time. Starting him out in a big body of water may be a little to much for him. Everyone wants to cast 60 ft. right off the bat, start him off slow and then let him extend his cast.
    Good luck

There will be days when fishing is better than ones optimistic forecast, others when it is far worse. Either is a gain over just staying home.

To start out, I would think the advise for an 8 footer should be OK, but you know his size and ability best.  Personally, I would not put a ton of money into a rod and reel.  Walmart has some combo's you can get for a reasonable price, but also check out the local tackle shops as well as Gander Mountain or Dicks.  Sometimes they have good deals on starter combo's.

As for flies, again, don't go wild.  A handful of little panfish poppers and bugs should do the trick.  Bluegills are not that picky.  Good luck.

Back yard or open field is always best.  If you have a farm pond that is mowed, that would work too.  Just make sure it is wide open.  Getting used to casting, without having to worry about getting hung up on back casts, is good for learning.

Most of the Erie tribs, don't require you to know how to cast that well.  Toss some roll cast practice in, and you'll be set for the tribs.

    JDRCAR424,
It really does depend on his age.  My grandson started fly fishing at 8 years with a 4wt 8 foot rod, and by the time he was 10 years old he was using my 6-8 wt  9-9.5 foot rods fairly easily.  If he is 10+ I would recommend going to wally-world and getting a complete Shakespeare kit in a bubble pack for about $25.00.  It winds up being about a 6-7 wt and it is 9 feet.  My grandson used that one for about 1 year now he's into graphite and steelhead. (caught his first steelie at 10).  Don't underestimate kids.  Also, why don't you and your son come out to the One Fly contest on 6 October?  You'll learn a lot and probably have a good time.  It's FREE!

There is a class this weekend at Girard Rice Ave Middle school starting at 10am to around 2pm fly tying and casting. Guys from the Erie casting club and Gem City fly tiers are doing the instruction. I think Elk Valley Recreation Group is sponsering It.
