rod holder for SUV???

I am looking for a rod holding setup for my 2000 4 runner. I saw the "rodloft pro" set up for like $100, and thats a bit much for me. I'd like to always have fly and spin rods with me, but out of the way.

anyone have one? ever build one? ideas?

i'm inclined to see if i can craft something, but I want something that works

i just snaped a tip in the window and don't want it to happen again

I have the Rod Saver Vehicle Rod Carrier System in my wife's blazer.  Works pretty good for me.

You can build one out of PVC pipe for a lot less.

I see no reason why it wouldn't work.  Mostly I use mine for 7' bass rods, but I have had long multi piece rods in it before.  Just install it so the spacing between the 2 straps will support the lengths you need.

    KJH807,
I used a 4" piece of pvc pipe for years.  Just get a piece of pipe,  one end cap. and one clean out cap (screws on)   Cut just a little bit longer than your rods.  Before putting the end cap on Place a piece of 1/2 inch foam rubber in the cap (to protect tips)  then do the same with the cap end.  I like to screw two pieces of webbing to the tube about 3 feet apart to pass straps through to attach it to the car, and attach a small chain to hold the cap to the tube so I don't loose it.    Velcro works good too.  as a matter of fact a piece of velcro fastened to the tube and hooking the cap can keep the cap from coming off.  I have carried as many as five rods in mine at one time.  I also use rod socks to keep the rods from rubbing on each other.

IT can withstand highway speeds, but can your rods?  road dirt, pebbles, dust, bugs.....all hitting your rod at 65mph?  I'd never transport a rod/reel outside a vehicle.

Nope, no pics.  For some reason every time I try to upload a picture from my computer it goes into the nether regions never to  be seen again.  I've tried everything. I think it's because I have dial-up and it takes too long.  It really isn't that hard.  Go to your nearest Lowes Get an 8 foot piece of schedule 40 pvc pipe.  Tell the pluming clerk what you are making and that you need a round end cap, and a clean-out cap for the other end.
I put my tie down loops on using blind rivets,( Lowes speciality fasteners bins), and the velcro came from a sewing supply store as did the webbing.  Fasten everything to the tube before you glue the caps on.  Simple as 7,13, 21.86.  Do NOT glue the threads just the clean out to the tubing.  Somebody else has posted pic's before I'm sure.

So I bought the "Rod Saver" lastnight  less that $18 out the door
I was doubtful at first, but i'm impressed
The straps are the same as seatbelts
I made a few minor mods... i removed the clips, disconnected my molding and just ran the straps behind
i still need to work on keeping the rods from sagging
    BUT
I drove to work with 2 fly rods and a spinning rod no problem

    I'll post some pics

    TroutAbout-  thanks for the help!!!

I removed the clothes hanger hooks and used their holes as the mounting points.  You need to keep tightening it for a while as the nylon stretches a bit.  I have had 8 casting/spinning rods & reels loaded up before.  It really sags with that much weight, but there is not much you can do about it.  Bought 16 blanks at the rod show in NC last year.  They all fit too.
