how far out of conneault are the walleye

On a calm day like today, I would like to try for walleye out of conneault in my 14' boat.  How far and deep?

I was out last weekend....you don't have to go far.  We got fish in 47 to 55 FOW.  Trolling harnesses and stinger spoons.  Caught two over 30" and lost one bigger by the boat.  We headed NW until we hit 55 to 60' and started trolling inward with the waves...  Good Luck!

Ditto.  Got them last night 44 to 50.  Maybe 1/2 mile NW of the lighthouse.

this saturday calls from light winds 6 mph from the west. So this sounds good for a 14' boat.

I have lead core on a line counter, will this work to troll ?

Without investing a fortune, what should I troll?

I have crawler harnesses,  bottom bouncers, banana crankbaits, #9 shadraps and bigger hot-n-tots.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

YOu really don't need core on a counter, but is that your only rod?  We got a few fish on Sunday trolling a 3 color core on the boards with a fire tiger Bagley.  It unfortunately only produced 1 hit and miss last nite.  Last nite fish were higher in the water column than they were Sunday.  You only had to get down 30 to 38 feet.  Let's see what all you are trolling (rods & line) before we talk about set ups.

    Storm:

Thannks for the reply.  I use the linecounters with 8' pinnacles M but I also can run braided line( 6lb  diameter) and have leadcore on
two ambassadeur 6000 which I run on  ML  6 1/2' casting rods.

I am not short of rods(casting or spinning)  since I fish 12 months(no ice fishing)  a year for crappie, trout, walleye, bass, pike, musky and steelhead.

I hear how people troll spoons and wonder if my bigger "little cleos" or my pike spoons would work.

You shouldn't be afraid of running some larger spoons.  Guys like the 2 1/4 size, but I like the 3 to 3 1/2.  If you're going to troll, do you plan on straight flat lining or will you invest in some dipsy divers or jet divers?  I sure would.  These tools will get you to your desired depth without letting out tons of line.  And if you do use them, I highly recommend using braided line like power pro or tuff line....you will see every little bumb and you can easily trip your dipsys with the "no stretch" line.  I have to admit, I do best on crawler harnesses, but spoons and cranks work on ocassion too.  I also like to use gulp crawler worms on the harnesses from time to time....the chartruese ones produced best for me last time we were out.  Best of luck to you Saturday...I'll be out of Conny Friday...

If you have full cores on those rods, they are a little much for fish in this shallow.  If you have partial cores (3 colors to 5 or 6 colors) they should work well now.  If you have partials, you can run just about any delivery, standard 'eye color spoons are working well: blueberry muffin, Kevorkian (Hot Rod if DW), Walleye slappers, Monkey Pukes, etc.  Harnesses in watermelon are solid consistent producers, 3.5 to 4" diving stick plugs will work well on braided line.  This time of year smaller, or at least, thinner spoons (Stinger Scorpions, even though the paint jobs stink, Dream Weaver Super Slims and WDs, etc.)  seem to work best, they best match the emerald shiners I believe that the eyes are foraging on.  I do catch a few fish on regular (3.75") spoons, but the most productive tend to be a little smaller.

I finally got out and tried Lake Erie on Tuesday.  Now this is my first time on Lake Erie for walleye ( charters do not count) in my 14' boat. I went out to the perch pack in 48 FOW off connie and trolled for walleye using dipsy divers pulling crawler harnesses. I learned the hard way which side of the boat the dipsy goes, and also that one may need heavier leaders than 10#.  Bottom line, I brought home 5 walleye whose combined weight was 18 lbs, lost two by the boat ( they broke my 10# leader).

I have asked a lot of questions the last two weeks and many of you have taken the time to give me great replies especially Storm.  Storm I owe you a beer.  I retire this Friday, and hope to try again.

    Much Thanks.

The one thing I have to say, even tho it should go without saying is, RESPECT LAKE ERIE. That being said, enjoy your time on the water.   Dave

Sixers, also if the wind is to high out a few miles try in 24 to 31 feet west of lighthouse. Alot of humps east and west of lighthouse next to shore and in the past few years they have been in there for the better part of the year. Was just in there last weekend and did very well. Also can drift these humps nicely in a small boat. We have 27 footer so we mostly troll along this breakline.

Nittdog, what was your program? Spoons, harnesses, or cranks? Dipsies or jets? We were up there a few weeks ago and didn't get any eyes. Settled for some jumbo perch fishing east of the lighthouse in 38ft.

Chauncy, sorry I didn't get back to you. been to the lake for a week. Program is Medium dipsies on 31/2 back 75, Leadcore flatlined 4 colors with 50 ft. leader of florocarbon and we use boards with cookie dipsies 80 ft. back. Harnesses and small stingers(monkey puke) You have to experiment on your own with distances. You are trolling short water and speed and what type of line you are using will be the determining factor. Fish were there through the fourth thinned out a bit on the 6th, only got 10 in tight before we had to go deeper. They will stack up again with this next wave of fish coming in from west.

I have not been able to get up to Lake Erie since July 4. So the question is the same as before, how far out does one need to go to find some decent walleye fishing in a 14' boat? Most reports seem to say 60 fow which seems like 4 miles out and is just a little to far in my boat. I plan to use dipsys and lead core.

I have both a Pa and Ohio license and would be able to launch at connie, elk access or walnut.  Some forcasts for next week seem to indicate some flat days.

    Thanks in advance.

There are still eyes to be caught in inside waters, there are just fewer of them and you have to beat the junk off to get to them.

Sixers, Fishing is still good in the shallower waters. 44ft. in front of lighthouse is as good as any.

Did well last time out in about 46 fow , it was late july, after sorting out the junk. So the question is the same, how far out of connie does one have to go to fish for walleye.  The forecast is for some , calm enough  for a 14 foot boat.
    Much thanks in advance.

On a calm day like today, I would like to try for walleye out of conneault in my 14' boat. How far and deep?

Went out today. tuesday 8/14 from 8  to noon.  Got 3 fish(walleye), now to some of you might just say why is he posting this.  I have a small boat and did not feel too comfortable following the big guys to 60- 70 fow.  So I fished within sight of the conney breakwall in 46- 48 fow. I have fished this spot 3 times this year and this is the least of my catches.  The bottomline is that it beats working; but I am retired, so I would not have worked.

Finally, thanks to guys who helped me lauch.  They just saw that I was alone and grabed my line as I pushed off and tied the boat up.  It really helped!

Sixers Glad you found some nice people to help you. I am right with you about taking a small boat out beyond sight of shore.
