Well I finally made it out for the first trip of the year to the Backchannel at the dam. I fished from the Mckees Rocks side. There were schools of emerald shiners which is a good sign. Water was high but fishable just in limited areas. About 15 mins in I nabbed the first of the year an 18" healthy Walleye. Over the next 2 hours I got 4 hybrids, a largemouth, and what I think was a juvenile muskie. heres the story: as I was fiddling around trying to light my smoke, my jig was in the water just doing whatever. I go to pull it out and all of a sudden there is this slender silver and dark blotchy thing on the end of the rod, of course it flips off and somehow by some form of fishing magic about 2 mins later I jigged it back out of the same spot. I got it to me and it jumped off the hook in between me, two rocks and the water. I got a good look at it and it had the jaw and fin layout of a muskie. I tried to grab it but the s.o.b. was so slimy it jumped outta my hand and closer to freedom, which thanks to a wave it found..... It was silver/white on the bottom and had dark blotches on the body along with a dark underlying color. I catch a muskie about once every leap year so my familiarity with small ones is limited. I was definately not a sauger either..Anyone?? I love the smorgasboard that is the river. Its been about two years since I caught one of these down there.
