Anyone been fishing around or near emsworth?

I'm bored waiting for trout, seeing if walleye are on yet or wipers or something,

It's been on for weeks now. White bass, hybrids, walleye, sauger, and others. The hell with trout opening day, why fight the crowds of a-holes and one-day-a-year-fisherman when you can catch white bass till your hands bleed. lol.
I know I'll be catching the hybrids and whites on opening of trout.

Im with carphead. I cant stand fighting the crowds on opening day. Would rather hit up some of my favorite spots on the river, avoid crowds, and wait till a alittle later in the season to try for trout.

Any reports from the trouthaters on here?

I did the annual troutmas thing.  I may have played more bocce than fished.  Had a great time, and managed to catch a few trout.  If the state switched trout to wiper stocking of the streams, I would have definitely fished more...

TD, were you fishing off of the wall by the dam, or the backchannel?

Thanks,

Mark

I was fishing the wall by the dam.  I am heading over to the back channel today, and hitting montour creek for some of the large trophy trout that they stocked also.  Did pretty good on opening day, started at the circus in North Park, you know a family thing, then hit pine creek then went to Big Sewickley Creek, crushed them there.  2nd cast caught a nice palemino, and all of the trout were at least 16 inches.  They stocked yesterday again with alot of West Virginia trout all over 15 inches.  My question is why are they bringing in trout from West Virginia and not using the ones from Pennsylvania.....

Well I finally made it out for the first trip of the year to the Backchannel at the dam. I fished from the Mckees Rocks side. There were schools of emerald shiners which is a good sign. Water was high but fishable just in limited areas.

About 15 mins in I nabbed the first of the year an 18" healthy Walleye. Over the next 2 hours I got 4 hybrids, a largemouth, and what I think was a juvenile muskie. heres the story:

as I was fiddling around trying to light my smoke, my jig was in the water just doing whatever. I go to pull it out and all of a sudden there is this slender silver and dark blotchy thing on the end of the rod, of course it flips off and somehow by some form of fishing magic about 2 mins later I jigged it back out of the same spot. I got it to me and it jumped off the hook in between me, two rocks and the water. I got a good look at it and it had the jaw and fin layout of a muskie. I tried to grab it but the s.o.b. was so slimy it jumped outta my hand and closer to freedom, which thanks to a wave it found..... It was silver/white on the bottom and had dark blotches on the body along with a dark underlying color. I catch a muskie about once every leap year so my familiarity with small ones is limited. I was definately not a sauger either..Anyone??

I love the smorgasboard that is the river. Its been about two years since I caught one of these down there.

The fish you describe sounds like a gar, theres tons of them in the rivers.

I hit the BC late yesterday afternoon for about and hour and only caught two - an eye and ultra small sauger.  I was about 100 yrds. from the spillway and I ddin't see any baitfish.  Last year I saw litereally millions of them and, so long as I can't get arrested for saying so, I routinely used my cast net to nab a few dozen.  This year I actually read PA fishing summary booklet, imagine my boredom, and learned that castnets are illegal in Allegheny county!  Can use them at Arthur, but need a permit.

PS: Iron City you are Freakin' HOT!!!! I'd sure like to get into YOUR backchannel!

I thought too that it might be a gar, but I have caught those in the past and it was not scaly at all like one. It was smooth and squishy like a trout.

I was fishing about 20 feet from the spillway yesterday. might head down again today.

The minnows used to be the "clutch" bait when the water was low and slow. You would always see them being chased and if you netted a bunch of the emerald shiners and used them it was like fishing with dynamite. Although since they dumped large rocks in the original honey hole down there, things are a little different now and especially since they dont close that gate nearest the shore. AC of E is making it difficult to fish there because that gate is always rippin.

I can't imagine anyone not being able to identify a gar from anything else in the rivers - that snoot and the long narrow shape of them - very unique looking.

The open gate explains why it has been so chopy this year, I thought it was b/c it was high from the rain.  Maybe I will try the wall near the dam on the front side.  Anyone been there lately?
