Anyone every use one of the Daiwa Shock rod and reel setups the sell? A buddy of mine is trying to sell me it new for $30 and I wanted to check with the fellow fishing community before doing so. I believe it is called a Daiwa Shock rod and reel and provided a link to the description of it below. Any comments are greatly appreciated. He told me the reel only had 1 ball bearing. Doesn't that suck and shouldn't I want more ball bearings to last longer?

I have not used that particular rod and reel, but in the past I have had inexpensive Diawa set ups and they are not too bad.  It might make a good back up in case something happens to your primary rod and reel.

Bughawk (or another experienced fishermen),

What would you recommend for a "Primary" rod and reel setup? I really do not want to spend more than $65 dollors. Can you or anyone else help me out as I do not want to waste my money as my financial sitution is really tight right now. Thank you for all your help in advance.

fishON4Me,

That is a tough question to answer because I am not sure what you are fishing for, but a good soild spinning set up in the 7 to 8 foot range would pretty much cover a wide range of fishing conditions.

Combos generally are a better deal, sometimes if you look around you can come up with a good buy on rods and reels, especially near the end of summer when the large sports stores are putting their gear on clearance.

I would suggest starting with the FishUSA folks.  They are easy to work with and have very good service.  Give them a call and tell them what you are looking for.  Here are a couple of suggestions that are in about your price range:

You may also want to check out Gander Mountain if there is one near you.  There Guide series of rods and reels are not a bad value and they have a good warranty as well.

Good luck in your quest and good fishing.

Bughawk,

The setup would generally be for bass, perch, and pan fishing from shore since I do not own a boat. Does that change the options you listed or should I be looking for a different set up then mentioned previously? Thanks again for the replies and suggestions. You are a very helpful person.

The suggestions should be just fine.  Good luck finding your new rod and reel.
