Chicken I rarely use decoys or scents. Sometimes they work, sometimes they bite you in the ass. That decoy is actually a 3-D target we shoot and let out all year and happen to set up a camera for fun. Tinks on it, I think. A friend of mine gets piss from a hot doe, from a friend's farm here locally, every year. Every year, he scares the skin out of deer. The fact is, deer are social animals. They identify themselves by smell. If they smell something unfamiliar, they bolt. It's the nature of the prey. Yet, because they are social animals, they may walk right up to a decoy. Some bucks will come in to investigate, some the scent/decoy will spook. I've had deer stick their nose in scents, others run for their life once they smell it. Many don't even pay attention to it. Some stop, just for a second. I recall placing scent out and having a doe follow the trail to the base of the tree. Some deer will actually avoid decoys on purpose. Did I just contradict myself like 8 times? Yes, because it's circumstancial and a risk you have to decide to take. I layed scent down one time last year, November 3.. The doe, who was headed my way, jumped out of her skin once she hit the trail, snorted a handful of times, and took off. What if there was a buck following her? I don't know if there was but I might have found out if I hadn't layed that trail down. You just never know what kind of mood a deer will be in. Remember, you are in their bedroom and throwing a decoy out or scent down isn't going to bring the county's deer population to you. Experiences and opinions will vary by hunter. i think a lot of it has to do with presssured/unpressured deer.
