I have never hunted in archery season & now that Pa has legalized
crossbows for use in archery I am considering getting one.I would also like to use it in rifle season as well. Can anyone please suggest a brand and style that would be good to start out with and optics for it as well. I know it's a broad question, but I don't know where to start. I have shot them in the past before and enjoyed them and now would like to explore the opportunity.

What ya looking to spend?

Many models and styles out there. I have a Parker Cyclone and a Excalibur Vortex. Cyclone is fast, compact and quiet but front heavy and requires more maintenance. Excalibur is a recurve style that is slower, wider and louder but balances better and easy on maintenance.

The deer I have shot with both of them didn't know the difference so it comes down to the style of hunting you do. The width of the Excalibur needs some consideration if you do alot of treestand hunting. The wider the bow, the more those horizontal limbs restrict your shooting arc.

I recommend the Parker Tornado for compound style and the Excalibur Vortex for recurve style. As far as optics, Hawke Optics are standard issue on Parker bows and there are very impressive. I put on on my Excalibur too.

The two bows above are gonna run you about $700 for the package deals. Not cheap but lifetime warranties and great performers. There are cheaper bows and more expensive bows out there.

My brother has shot a Ten Point for the past 3 years. It is a very nice xbow. Dad has the Excalibur. I like the Ten Point better due to the integrated draw system and compactness compared to the excalibur.

The difference however comes in the scope. The excalibur Vari-Zone or (Lumi-Zone lighted reticle) is the cat's butt....There is a dial on the side of the scope that you set for your fps and then the cross hairs are on @ 20, next mark down thirty, etc.....

My brother switched to that scope on his Ten Point this year and it made all the difference in the world.

Don't get me wrong, the excalibur is a very nice xbow, but for the money I would take the ten point & it is much less pricey.

$400 range and you are looking at Barnetts and lower end Hortons. I have shot both of them in quite a few models but not enough to make recommendations to ya. The Barnetts will be faster but the components not the quality of the Hortons IMO.

Jeb I may be buying a Xbow myself shoulders are getting a little rough. But I would go to bass pro site look at what you can you can spend and then look at the reviews on the one you choose. Hortons,Parkers,barnetts all have BAD reviews on some of there models. The best ones out there seem to be Ten points and the excaliburs. Hope this helps. It helped my on which It will be the ten point Titan HLX package. But of coarse I'll have to go shoot a few before i buy one.

Ten Point crossbows are quality through and through. Their cheapest model will set you back about $550 and the rest go way up from there.
