Does anyone know any good spots for crappie within about an hour of Pittsburgh? Me and a buddy have tried for years to find a good place. Cross creek we only managed a 4-5 each time we went. keystone turend out to be a bust as well. any suggstions.

yeah, crooked creek its about an hour away, i do well every time i go out there, if the crappie arent biting theres alot of sandwhich sized gills too. oh yeah and some big largemouth

about a month ago, fishing a warmwater discharge on the mon river, i landed 3 over 12"

Thnaks for the info. My buddy always wanted to try crooked creek. maybe we'll giv ethat a shot.
Not 3 12" on the mon intrigues me, anybody else do anygood on the rivers, i've never had any luck with crappies there.

Haven't fished the Mon for crappie for several years....moved out of that area 30 years ago. However, I fished for crappie right off the aquatorium along it's edges at night with minnows for crappie and was amazed at the size and number I caught there. Keep a light or lantern shining on the water to attract bugs which in turn attracts minnows and other small fish that bring in the bigger fish. This a great time of the year to be fishing there at night. Fish straight down along the edge of the wall with a float. The corners where highly productive, especially the lower one down current.

Keystone state park or Keystone power dam? I quit trout fishing many times at Keystone state park because of the crappie hit. Try Bridgeport dam (Mt. Pleasant), Virgin Run (no joke), Acme dam, or Greenlick.

The Allegheny has decent Crappie, and I've gotten a few on the Ohio. Canonsburg Lake, Chartiers Creek and Lake Arthur too.

luvinbluegills did you ever catch any of any size on cannonsburgh? I've caught hundreds there but all small. And if you don't ind me asking where at on chartiers. I trout fish that quite often and have never landed a crappie.

I've never gotten any that were really bragging size, but my neighbor does pretty consistently. We've been tryign to plan a trip together so he can clue me in. The mouth of Chartiers Creek at McKees Rocks is the place I see them caught, and big ones too. There's a lot of wood in the water down there, and I think this pulls them out of the main river.

just caught a few real good keepers in Hereford Manor...I have caught some real nice fish in Raccoon.
But hands down within 1 hour of PGH Moraine is the best, especially in Spring for us!

The state seems to make that your own disgression. Check out their consumption advisories. Most of the river fish have no advisories. As opposed to Lake Erie having a bunch? I'd assume this is because, there are more studies done on Erie fish, since it is a source of commercial fishing?

Anyway, I personally wouldn't eat any fish from either 3 main rivers, and the urban areas of any other tributary. Up stream on the Allegheny would be the only one that I would consider. Even then, I wouldn't eat more than a meal per month, unless you are north of any old industry or city. Check out some Ohio fishing sites, there are a bunch of people that eat fish from the Ohio River. If you have any young kids or a pregnant wife, I'd advise not to share with them, just to be cautious too.
