So yesterday, I figured I'd take advantage of the weather change to catch some fish on the Conemaugh.  I raced home from work, got ready and made the drive from Latrobe to the Conemaugh Dam, only to see that they had all the sluice gates open and the river looked like the chocolate milk version of the Bering Sea on Deadliest Catch.  Needless to say, this was a big disappointment.

Is there any way to tell (web page, phone number) what they're doing at the dam without actually visiting?  I considered looking at the satellite picture of it on google maps, but their photos are seriously dated (the building I lived in all of last year is still under construction on Google maps!).

I passed the Conemaugh Dam for the first time yesterday on my way to Altoona, i seen pretty much what you seen, high an muddy water, looks like lots of potential when conditions would be good, as well the Kiski and Allegheny, my route follows both rivers an when they both clear up i'm gonna have to scout for some good lookin spots.

Iv'e done well at both locations before.  Saw and caught some huge fish.  Haven't explored the Kiski yet though, seems like it would have some serious potential.

the kiski has some awsome fishing....i fish it about twice a week all summer and you never know what you will catch, ive gotten bass, walleye, sauger, trout, cats and carp. it has transformed from a nasty orange polluted river to an awsome fishery

I've seen a lot of people fishing the Kiski when I'm passing through, but have never fished it personally.. Looks kick ass. Conemaugh and Loyalhanna are good, so why not the Kiski!

Which river is the one that flows through Saltsburg?  I used to cross it on my way to IUP from Pittsburgh, and it always looked very promising, but I've never fished it.

For as wide as the Conemaugh an Kiski are, they both look really deep, i was quite suprised, do they compare well with the Yough ?

ha compare? they dont.  theres some deep spots but not too many....the kiski/conemaugh is like a clearance rack at the store...you might find somthing you want, but most of the time you don't.  If you want numbers of fish I wouldnt exactly target these areas, i just go here cuz im close and get bored.

It migt not be as deep as you think. all of the acid mine drainage from far up into the watershed leaves the water with a green tint and can sometimes be decieving when trying to judge depth.

we had a umm.... "hearty" discussion on the place a while back. there are fish in it, there are big fish too, but as far as being the middle allegheny etc... it is not. still has some work to be done to clean it up more. it has come a long way though.
