Spent Sunday and Monday out in SE Ohio.  Unfortunately, the weather is warmer there than here (78 on Monday).  The bucks are running but most of it is at night and they are bedding by around 8 am.  I have a couple of real bruisers pegged, but getting them to move during shooting light will be my challenge.  I will be hunting solo out of a spike camp for the next 5 days.  I will let you know how I make out.

The deer have been very sluggish. Probably because of the warm weather. Hopefully with colder temps comming it will get them going moving good. Had lots of action this morning but once it started heating up they quit. Only thing I needed was sun tan lotion........

Well...  wish I had better news.  I shot an absolute monster 10 point (probably net between 150 and 160).  My arrow caught a twig two feet in front of the lungs and deflected the arrow back into the liver.  Still a fatal hit and I let the deer go for 4 hours before resuming the track.  The deer crossed onto another landowner's property.  He happened to be outside, so I stopped to ask him if I could track the deer onto his property.  I let him know that the deer was bleeding profusely and likely was laying dead in the ravine behind his barn.  He asked me to wait a moment, and promptly came back with a pistol tucked into the front of his pants.  He then informed me that he did not like hunters or what we stand for and that I should be leaving his property immediately.  For the last three days, the crows, ravens, vultures and coyotes have been all over the area right behind his barn.  No doubt he knew the deer was there and was a complete anti hunter.  There was nothing I could do about it.  I watched the property through binoculars for the next couple of days on and off and there didn't seem like a second when he wasn't out patrolling his property, likely hoping to catch me slipping in to claim the animal.  Next time... I might handle it a little differently.  Silence and darkness can be our friends.

Almost sounds like my neighbor down the road. Maybe try calling the game warden. Maybe he could talk some sense into the guy........not to mention, they have jurisdiction to go just about anywhere.

That sucks, if they are gonna accuse you sound like you may as well shoot at them and make it worth it.

Just kidding,  That story about the nasty neighbor is going to get more and more common.

In PA that will work.  In OH, they will not even show up unless it is the landowner filing the grievance.  In which case, the hunter is likely the one that will end up on the short end of the stick.  Technically, by crossing onto his property and asking permission to track the deer... I was trespassing and could have been cited for such.  Oh well... live and learn.

I had this happen to a neighbor last year.  To summarize, the landowner won 46 million dollars a decade ago and now let's no one hunt.  My neighbor (who's Dad pays her $4000 annually to use her land to plant corn) shot the huge buck and it went onto to her property by a few yards.  He called his Dad, dad called the landowner.  She came down and said no.  Dad called the PGC.  Warden came down asked if the land owner wanted the deer.  She said no, so the warden took it.  Understanding the situation and knowing the landowner, I would have walked my ass over there and dragged that deer back over the line.  Fine me, call me a criminal, but they should have known she was going to say no.

Me too, had this happen last year with the buck I shot, except I know the landowner but never asked actual permission.   I didn't ask, just took a few steps onto their property, pulled the deer over the line and gutted it.   It couldn't have been more than 5 yards.  It wasn't their actual house but their cabin.   In an area where the deer was inside the property at a longer distance, and I didn't know the landowner, I would have asked too.

You did the right thing Griffon in terms of respect, but got **** on.  That's a shame.

That's too bad Griffon. I hate to admit it, but I would have walked over the property line and got the deer that night.

My property is posted, but if someone shot one and had the deer go over the property line, i'd not only allow that person to look for the deer, i'd help them find it and drag it out.

Thanks for the kind words gentlemen.  Under normal circumstances, I may have gone to look for the buck as well.  That said, when gun play comes into the arena you need to ask yourself if a deer is worth your life.  Is it worth deserting family for an animal?

That said, I redeemed myself this weekend.  While turkey hunting on Saturday in Pittsburgh, I saw several bucks chasing does and one buck that was seriously injured (didn't know if it had been to a car or archer at the time).  After evaluating his behavior, I contacted a buddy who was having his 50th birthday.  I told him that I had a buck for him (he had not filled his tag and this was a big boy).  I explained the situation and he was still willing to attempt to harvest the buck.  It rained on Saturday, so stalking was an option.  We went where I had seen the buck last and jumped him up.  He stopped at 20 yards and my buddy was able to get an arrow into him (even though it was a neck shot).  The deer was hurt bad, but had his stamina and now the chase was on.  Two arrows later (one good, one not...) the buck piled up into a swollen creek and we retrieved him.  He had indeed been shot in the right front shoulder.  I do not think he would have lived, the wound was effecting him pretty seriously.  The buck turned out to be a main frame 10 point with a couple of 1 inch stickers, making him a 12.  This was by far his biggest buck and probably the best birthday gift he could have gotten.  Now I can sleep a little better...

yeah MS

Zellner had 6 different instances of poaching there last year.  I just went thru there about an hour ago.  Saw over 20 deer with the headlights.  They almost caught her baiting last year.  Someone saw the Snowberger and Zellner heading in and alerted her so she got out of there.  Bait laying all around the stand.  The time is coming !!

yea tell me about poaching...i just heard some faggot that i went to school with i guess has been shooting deer in the valley got caught last week right across from where the trucks are parked at canoe creek by the quarry...i guess they watched him the whole time...turns out it was a very nice 6 pt that i've seen since he was in velvet, about 16, 17" inside. hope he learns. i hate idiot scumbags. i heard he lost his license for 10 years and good for him. it really kicks in when you hear about it right by where you hunt especially...anyways i also was out in there tonight, spotting the valley and loop...lotta nice ones but no pigs...and saw just 2 scrubbies at lindas, and her ex's had a nice 8 with a little one..zellner's a good guy IMO...my buddies dad was in the guard with him and he brought up a high 600, almost 700 lb bear he caught this summer by gearharts...it started coming off the tranq and was pissing everywhere...also griffon glad to hear you put him on a great deer! very nice present...kype, we gettin together in rifle or what?

It's tough, pick a quadrant of the state that you want to hunt, start narrowing it down with Topos, then start banging on doors or looking on Ohio websites that show public lands.  That is how my buddies and I have done it for several years and we have always faired quite well.
